The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023, D: Øvredal) S: Hawkins

The Last Voyage of the Demeter
studio Millenium Films
director Neil Marshall
writer Lowell Cauffiel, Bragi Schut Jr, James V. Hart
Synopsis "Demeter" is the name of the ship that carried Dracula's coffin from Transylvania to England in Bram Stoker's classic tale.

The story, penned by Bragi Schut Jr., is based on a chapter in Bram Stoker's "Dracula" describing the arrival of the vampire count in England on a cargo ship that has crashed into the rocks at Whitby with no crew and the dead captain lashed to the steering wheel. Stoker tells the story via the captain's log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear.

Written by Bragi Schut, it's said to place the voyage center stage in a tale that is reminiscent of the first movie in the Alien franchise, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger.

lthough yet to be confirmed, we’re told Ben Kingsley is still attached to play the film’s Captain. In addition, Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence, The Road, The Lord of the Rings) has been offered the lead role of “Henry Clemens,” a source exclusively reveals to Bloody. There’s no real word on Noomi Rapace, coming off Prometheus, other than she “may” still be starring as “Anna Billington.” I can only guess it comes down to scheduling, especially with a movie that’s been stuck ashore for nearly a decade.

The latest draft was written by Lowell Cauffiel and is said to place the voyage center stage in a tale that is reminiscent of the first movie in the Alien franchise, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger.

Sounds interesting...keeping my fingers crossed that Viggo Mortensen accepts.

Sounds like an interesting story, I'm definitely interested!

However, reading "Ben Kingsley is still attached..." sends more shivers down my spine than any Dracula movie could.

That sounds like a really cool premise. I wasn't blown away by Centurion, but I've liked just about everything else Marshall has done.

I'd like to see what Mortensen could do under Marshall's direction.

re: The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023, D: Øvredal) S: Hawkins

EXCLUSIVE: Corey Hawkins is set to star in Amblin Partners’ Last Voyage Of The Demeter with Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark helmer Andre Øvredal officially on board to direct.

Bullet Train scribe Zak Olkewicz penned the script, which is based on a single chapter, “The Captain’s Log,” from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula. The chapter tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. The film will detail the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence onboard the ship. When it finally arrived near Whitby Harbor, it was a derelict. There was no trace of the crew. The initial script was written by Bragi Schut.

The film is being produced by Mike Medavoy, Brad Fischer and Arnold Messer, who have produced such critical and box office successes as Black Swan, Shutter Island, and Zodiac. Production of the pic marks a near 20-year milestone for the producers, having originally purchased the script in 2002.

It doesn’t look like anything groundbreaking but that’s a pretty damn cool setting for a horror movie.

Yeah, despite the obvious ending, it looks moody and fun.

By the way, when did this stupidass trend of trailers being preceded by promos of the very same trailer begin?

I hate that shit. I read they do that because the stats said that folks have no memory of what they just clicked on their mobile device.

It'll be nice to see Hawkins in something "new". He seemed to have dropped off the map after the 24 series. Been a fan of his for a while.

I'll definitely be using my Regal Unlimited Pass for this one.

Even so, it'll be fun to see a André Øvredal film in the theater again, even if it isn't one he wrote.

It so happen that I am rewatching Dracula on Netflix and the second episode takes place on the Demeter. I freaking love this mini-series on Dracula. The 3rd episode went a bit far into the future... but overall still very enjoyable.

Stuckmann seemed to think it was decent. I think it looks interesting. Probably will wait until it’s available to stream.

Good reviews from horror sites.
Mainstream critics only like horror when it's not really horror but more social commentary.

In the original novel the captain is Russian and most of the crew are Romainian. Could have been a good place to do some commentary, not sure if they changed it for the movie.

Evil Dead Rise and Barbarian were social commentaries?

Everything in the whole wide world has exceptions, and we all exaggerate to make a point. I'm sure you're being internet pendantic and still completely get my point.

Listening to so many DVD commentaries, I've learned that almost every good movie has social commentary. The director will often explain their subtext. That layers add to the experience.

Sometimes it's at 10%. And sometimes it's at 90%.

There are very few writers and directors who manage to make a story without that subtext.

Stuckmann seems to think everything is decent nowadays. Since he went to doing only positive reviews, I quit listening to him because I feel I can't trust his reviews anymore. It is a shame because he was one of my favorite critics.
