In order to playback DVD's in DTS on a Sony 935, does the DVD player have to be a DTS decoder? I thought a non-DTS signal could be sent to the receiver, which would decode into DTS.

Your DVD player has to have DTS capabilities. It does not have to be able to decode the sound, it just has to be able to send the sound to the receiver for decoding. Most DVD players made within the last 2 years should have this capability. Also, if you have a Sony DVD player, you have to go into the menu screen to turn on the Dolby Digital/DTS output from the coaxial/optical cable.

If it doesn't have the DTS emblem on the front, its not DTS-ready?

That is true. How old is your player? My first Panasonic had no DTS capabilities because DTS was not as popular as Dolby Digital yet. 2 months later I sold it at auction, and picked up the Sony DVP650D 5 DVD disc changer. I could not be happier. DTS is a great feature that really makes a hell of a difference.

...to finish up what audiofreak left off, it make a heck of a difference provided you have the right equipment and setup to take advantage of the DTS format technology.

Are you sure it is playing in DTS and not DD 2.0 which is the default soundtrack option on all DTS DVDs that do not also contain a DD 5.1 option. Which DVD are you refering to. If your DVD player is only DTS ready and your receiver is only DD capable then you must either be playing the DD 2.0 soundtrack or the DVD has both the DTS and DD 5.1 and is defaulting to the latter.
