Spartacus: Fake Blood, Crappy slo-mo/CGI and a load of poo...

Ok so I just finished that series (well that and 'Gods if the Arena'). So, WTF was that? I would have settled for something 50% as good as 'Rome' and I didn't even get 20... What I got was the bastard retarded illegitimate child from the union (I suspect it was sodomy) of '300' and 'Gladiator'. Huh...

What's funny is reading reviews afterwards where reviewers were clearly irritated by the first couple of episodes but ask the viewer to be patient because it allegedly gets better. Well it does, marginally, but overall, it's still mostly mediocre drivel. And this gets 8.7 on IMDB?

I agree it's nothing like the quality of Rome. It's popcorn TV, pure and simple, but I think it's well done popcorn TV. It appeals to the 15-year-old in me, and that's why I watch.

Agreed. Not everything needs to be serious. Sometimes I just want to watch shit blow up.

I don't donate my blood so it can be used to help people who are dying in a hospital. I donate my blood so it can be used to make movies more realistic.

Well maybe the 15 y/o in me died

Honestly, I like blood, gore, nudity and sex as much as the next guy but since that wasn't a 2 hour movie, there are limits to my patience when there's not much else to hold your attention.

I can see sticking through a movie you are not enjoying(two hours wasted)...but 16 episodes of a show? If I stuck my finger in something and it started to hurt, I think I would pull out....

OP is dead on. Glad I only stuck around for the first five or so episodes though.

Luckily everybody is entitled to their opinions and there's nothing wrong with not liking the show. Plenty of people do though, and I don't think they need to explain themselves to you.

Re: Spartacus: Fake Blood, Crappy slo-mo/CGI and a load of poo...

I'm in my late 30's and I think it's one of the best action serial dramas currently on TV right now. Some really compelling characters and great setting, even though it's loosely based on Roman history. Noone ever said Spartacus was supposed to be the next Rome. It's more along the lines of a live action graphic novel. It's going to be campy at time and a little over the top. It's too bad the upcoming 3rd season in January will be the final one. But, I applaud the Producers of the show for making the decision to end it on their own terms.

I firmly believe had Andy Whitfield not gotten sick after filming season 1 and died, he could have had the potential to be a big international star. I think he was well on his way.

^^This, too.

And I'm 40. Watched first episode of Spartcus and had to turn it off. Didn't care for all the CGI, blood, slo-mo, etc. But about a month later, decided to give it another try. I honestly think the first couple episodes were the worst, but after that, they toned down a lot of the CGI and slo-mo and it got really good. They still had some of the slo-mo and blood-splatter in the later episodes, but it was limited to the fighting in the arena mostly, so you knew when it was coming. Somehow this made it better.

I really up liking it quite a bit...

^^^This

Gave up after the first episode or two, and eventually went back to it, and just loved everything about the first season. Was hesitant about the second season, and still haven't gotten around to watching it, but I definitely will when I get a chance.

Re: Spartacus: Fake Blood, Crappy slo-mo/CGI and a load of poo...

I'm almost 40 and thought it was fantastic. The first episode took a little getting into, but I was pretty much sold from that point on. The first two series with Andy Whitfield were flipping fantastic, and Spartacus is one of my favorite shows from the last few years. The new one took a little step back in all areas, but still puts me in front of the TV every week it's on. Very impressive story writing, great acting (yes, I'm serious - some of the best villans on TV, IMHO). It pushes the boundaries of TV in a number of ways, and I like the results. It's certainly not for everyone, but I love it. Just wish Andy could have been around to see it through.

^ Andy Whitfield only appeared in season 1 due to his cancer diagnosis.

If your talking about Gods of the Arena, the prequel, he only appeared in a flashback sequence in the 1st episode.
