Pick your 5 favorite songs from Bruce Springsteen's double-album "THE RIVER" (1980)
If you had to pick your five favorite tracks from this Bruce Springsteen album, which would it be?
Pretend you were the producer for this, and the end result became something where Bruce could only release an EP of five tracks - or nothing at all - if you were the producer in charge of selecting the five songs required for the EP, which five would you choose for release?
(my five are indicated in Bold and Italiacs)
Side one
"The Ties That Bind"
"Sherry Darling"
"Jackson Cage"
"Two Hearts"
"Independence Day"
Side two
"Hungry Heart"
"Out in the Street"
"Crush on You"
"You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)"
"I Wanna Marry You"
"The River"
Side three
"Point Blank"
"Cadillac Ranch"
"I'm a Rocker"
"Fade Away"
"Stolen Car"
Side four
"Ramrod"
"The Price You Pay"
"Drive All Night"
"Wreck on the Highway"

I'll play
1. Jackson Cage
2. Crush On You
3. You Can Look (but you'd better not touch)
4. Cadillac Ranch
5. I'm a Rocker
I've always believed that the river could have been springsteens truest pop record had he been able to edit. It's a masterpiece...but it drags. Follow the born in the USA formula of picking upbeat tunes and it would have been a great 80s party album.

It's funny how different you can make that album by just pulling 5 songs off
1. Hungry Heart
2. The Ties That Bind
3. The River
4. Point Blank
5. Ramrod

Maybe safe bets, maybe the more recognizable songs from the album, but these were always the ones that stuck with me. Obviously side three was my favorite - and yes, I say that from vinyl listening experience.
"The River"
"Point Blank"
"Cadillac Ranch"
"I'm a Rocker"
"Fade Away"

"The River"
"Point Blank"
"Drive All Night"
"Wreck on the Highway"
"The Ties That Bind"
To me, this was the first Bruce album that was not a complete success. The four albums prior to this release were all solid winners from start to finish. This one had hits and misses.

If I'm the producer I'd vote to release nothing at all and scrap the EP. Might just be me though.

Tough choices. This came out when I was 17 and just discovering Bruce, so this is one of my favorite records from him (even though I acknowledge that its flawed). And I saw him for the first time on this tour. But here's my crack at it:
"Sherry Darling"
"Out in the Street"
"The River"
"Point Blank"
"Ramrod"
With "I'm a Rocker" being the song that almost made the cut, but couldn't find a place for it.

If forced to choose only five? Damn...feels like sacrilege, but OK...
"Two Hearts"
"Hungry Heart"
"Out in the Street"
**"I Wanna Marry You"
"Stolen Car"
(**played at my wedding, so special personal meaning to me)
