Haven't seen a thread on the new Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
According to several websites, this new Need for Speed combines the best of Most Wanted with the best of Burnout Paradise.
I for one am really looking forward to is. I played the heck out of Burnout Paradise including Big Surf Island. Loved the social aspect with all the group challenges.
I'm the only person who cares about the NFS series here. I'd have made this thread during E3 but it would have been a ghost town.

Burnout Paradise raped every great memory I had of the franchise and the Need for Speed franchise sucks... and that's why nobody is excited.
Well... it could be worse. Sony could announce Ridge Racer 1080P and then absolutely nobody would care.

Burnout Paradise is the only driving game I've cared about this entire generation. The notion of playing it with licensed cars and epic police chases is extremely appealing. I just hope they retain some of the craziness in Paradise and duplicate the online freeburn stuff.
For Burnout fans who didn't like Burnout Paradise when it released, I really recommend checking it out now. The multiple updates fixed all of my gripes about the game, and the open world stuff turned out to be a blast when approached with an open mind.

raped the franchise?? While I miss a full blown Crash mode, I think Paradise was a great evolution of the series. I must've put in 80 hours into the game doing all the online stuff.
The latest Hot Pursuit (also by Criterion) was another game I played through. Too bad the online was lacking in this game.

I re-bought it a few months ago and you can still put me in the "meh" camp. The restarts are nice, but driving around to find shit to do still sucks balls. Just give me a list of race types & races and let me go at it.
Also, I'm TERRIBLE at memorizing maps, so constantly watching the map instead of the road isn't fun.

Racing is such a small part of the game though...and probably the least interesting part.
I enjoyed the takedown challenges and marked man much more, and the easter egg hunts for signs and jumps are a blast. But really, the best part is just tooling around in the world, and it's even better with friends in freeburn with the most seamless online matchmaking I've seen in any game ever.

This is a fair criticism, and it bothered me early on as well, but ultimately it adds an element of openness that you don't get in other driving/racing games. Usually, you're on a track and just trying to get from point A to point B, but in Pardadise the race feels like it's happening in an organic world with tons of options and shortcuts.
What I would often do, and I doubt this will appease you any, is just hit pause occassionally and plan my next turn or two.

In case somebody didn't want to click through to see the video, here's a full version with trailer and presentation.
Lots of little things that are just like Paradise, specifically the way takedowns look, the Criterion sign smash, the gas station, the gates and the way the boost meter is refilled with stunts and near misses. All indications are that they made Burnout Paradise with licenced cars. Bless them if they did.
My only concern is the driving itself. Paradise and the the other Burnout games have a very specific arcade feel to the driving, which I found lacking in Hot Pursuit. I hope they got it right this time.

It looks to like during events like a race there are checkpoints that linger in front of you so that watching a map is not entirely needed. Looks to me like the racing aspect will be a bit more intuitive if this is so. I'm guessing though that the car physics won't be nearly as arcadey as BP.

I don't know...watching the video, the driving looks just like a session of Paradise in terms of the way the car is being thrown around with ease.

Right, same for those. Just give me a list of available challenges, marked man events, takedowns, etc. to pick from. If I've ever simply driven through an intersection(not necessarily started that mission), that challenge should be available from a menu. I shouldn't have to drive to find shit to do every time I boot up the game.
And yes, jumps, signs and easter eggs are all well and fine, but I did most of those in the first few times playing the game. Once those are done, I just want to race, do challenges, etc.

I guess it would have been nice if they'd given the option to do it that way, at least in single player. I get that they didn't initially build it in because they wanted an organic world, but when they gave in and inserted restarts, they could have taken this step as well.
I'm thinking that you can use the map that way to some degree by opening it up and setting waypoints, but it's been a long long time since I did all of the intersection stuff. It's been all freeburn for me the few times I've played lately. We usually just end up in the quarry or airport doing stunts and crashing into each other.
Just cancelled my $45 preorder with Newegg. If the reviews are good, will pick it up with Forza Horizons and something else at Target. I anticipate it being very good, but don't like the review embargo and since the last NFS game sucked (though with no Critierion input), I just figured it was safer this way with the upcoming buy 2, Get 1 Free Target deal. It's official. This game is Burnout + cops. So awesome.
Picked this up today and played for a few hours. It was confusing at first, but maybe it'll just take some getting used to. There's no "garage" or menu when you start. The game literally throws you into a race right off the bat and you have to figure it out as you go. Everything is pretty much done on the fly. Like I said, probably just takes some getting used to.
It definitely feels just like burnout with the open world, smashing gates and billboards, vehicle takedowns, etc. The cops are fun to smash into when you're just messing around and exploring, but they turn into a real pain in the ass when you're in an actual race. It's hard enough dealing with the traffic at insane speeds, never mind cops putting up roadblocks and spike strips. It's still super early for me but it's already WAY more difficult than Burnout ever was.
I haven't tried the multiplayer because nobody on my friends list has the game yet and I don't feel like jumping in with a bunch of randoms.
I really dig that the cars are scattered all over the place. Supposedly they are ALL available from the get go, you just have to find them. It's pretty cool. I've already found a couple different spots that had the same car so I'm wondering if the lesser performance cars are more common and maybe there's only 1 or 2 locations that have the "super cars". In any case, it's fun just driving around trying to find a new type of car that you haven't driven yet.

They couldn't all be available from the start since the "Limited Edition" (i.e. first run) comes with "Early access" to a couple of cars :

If you read the print in the picture it says early access for multiplayer. Not sure how acquiring the cars in multiplayer is different from single player since I haven't tried the multiplayer yet, BUT... the very first car the "offline" game starts you in is a Porsche Carrera, and I already found a Maserati Gran Turismo also. I'm thinking those "special edition" cars are multiplayer only.
19K
10-31-12, 09:21 PM
So after my previous post I decided to try the multiplayer. Those two "limited edition" cars are for multiplayer. You do start with a decent variety of cars in the multiplayer (including the two listed above), but I'm still not sure how or if you can even unlock some of the others. For instance, in the single player I had already found the Ford F-150 Raptor and Lamborghini Countach... neither of those were available to me in multiplayer when I started it. Also, any unlocks you earned for a specific car offline don't carry over to the online version of that same car either. It seems the offline and online stuff are two completely different animals. I don't think there are any cops in the online game either.
Other than that, the online stuff seems very similar to Burnout. I randomly joined someone else's game so I didn't have control of the challenges, but in the short time I was on we did a lot of Burnout-esque things (meet in a certain spot and jump over x number of players, etc). It probably would've been better if the group was communicating, but nobody was. They all seemed more interested in smashing into each other than actually completing the challenge. Kinda figured it would be like that. Hopefully some of the PS3 Burnout players grab this at some point so I can get a more coordinated co-op experience.
All in all, I would definitely refer to this game as Burnout Paradise 2 with cops.

I bought this yesterday and played for about an hour. I got extremely frustrated very quickly.
It is just me, or is this game insanely difficult?
I hardly play games anymore, mainly because I suck at them. Most games are simply too hard for me. Have video games gotten a lot harder over the last 7 or 8 years or so, or have I just lost some hand/eye coordination and just suck at video games now?
I used to be pretty good at video games. I liked first person shooters and racing games. I had no problem beating first person shooters and would just play them until I beat them. Now, I can't even beat the first level of most first person shooters. I tried playing Gears of War a while back and honestly couldn't make it more than about 10 steps before I died over and over. Same with Dead Space. I don't even try anymore. I played Diablo 3 on the PC and enjoyed it but the only reason I was able to have any amount of success was because foxdvd helped me out and gave me a bunch of suped up items. I got immediately destroyed when I tried to play through it again on the next difficulty level though and quickly lost interest.
As far as racing games go, I used to dominate those suckers. The Need for Speed games back in the day were a lot of fun to me mainly because I could actually win races. I understand that new games have a bit of a learning curve, but I could tell very quickly last night that I'm going to have a hard time playing this game. I can't go more than about 20 seconds without totalling my car.
I don't know...video games just aren't fun for me anymore because I suck ass, but is it me or have they just gotten a lot harder over the years?

Where are you looking on the screen as you're racing? if you look at your map you're going to die every time. It takes a little getting used to, but paying attention to where the checkpoint beacons are will let you know which way you're going to need to turn.

However, my buddy has one of those thingies that lets you play old Nintendo games--not an actual NES, but it's some kind of console system that emulates old NES games. Anyway, I played Punch Out and couldn't even beat the second Bald Bull. I put in the Tyson code and got destroyed like 10 times in a row, so I guess I really have gotten worse.

I put it in last night and played for about 1.5 hours in single player. I also think it is a bit more difficult than Burnout Paradise was from the beginning. I was just driving around trying to get familiar with the map and finding shortcuts. I must have found about a dozen cars just doing this but I gotta say I prefer the Burnout method of earning cars a bit better. That way the difficulty and speed of the cars would grow as you went through the game is better to me than finding a Camaro and jumping in to a supercar next.
I like it though and I'll probably try multiplayer this weekend after I'm more comfortable with the map. If any PS players want to get together you can add me with PSN name ChipMac64.

I agree. I think it was the 2nd race of the game, only 3 laps. I got 2nd on my first try (lost by maybe a car length), redid the race and beat my time by FIFTEEN SECONDS, still got 2nd by about a car length. I stopped playing after about the 6th race. I LOVED the first most wanted, beat it pretty easily (even thought the cops were extremely frustrating in the later levels), but this one just seems unfair. The controls are the most unforgiving piece of shit I've experienced in a racing game. I literally struggle to NOT hit a wall or lamp post or building going anything more than 70MPH. The cars over-correct way too much and there is no option to adjust the sensitivity of the controller. I've never been more pissed playing a game in such a short amount of time that I'm half-tempted to write the developers. There is no way anybody can think the controls are tight and add a sense of fun to this game... even lining up a straight shot to do a jump thru a sign was a hassle.
Whoever mentioned "rubber banding" is dead on. I actually was leading a race by maybe two lengths and then crashed into a wall (shocking)... I proceeded down the wrong path and missed a checkpoint so I turned around, went back thru the correct check point and probably wasted 30s doing this... but WAIT... There is my opponent about 100 feet ahead of me!!?? He must of done the exact same thing as me. Fucking stupid.
I want to love this game so much as I just couldn't get enough of the first NFS... and I'll give this game a fair shot but I can't imagine sticking with it very long with Halo 4 and BOII coming out in the next few weeks.

HP...but closer to Burnout than HP was...
I never played HP. The only three racing games I have are Burnout:Paradise, Gran Turismo 5, and NFS:MW. Obviously Gran Turismo is a completely different type of game, but Burnout and Most Wanted feel EXACTLY the same to me driving/handling/gameplay wise. The only major difference being the addition of cops. Burnout had the same rubber banding AI as well. MW just feels more difficult because the you're not just racing, you're racing while cops are constantly smashing into you and setting up hazards in the road in front of you. It's WAY more frustrating for sure.
I think the multiplayer could be fun with a group of friends that actually talked and tried to complete the challenges together. I agree that jumping in with randoms is just a total cluster fuck. But that can be said about a lot of games.

I had Burnout when it first came out... maybe not on launch day, but definitely before they added any DLC. I always thought it was great. The multiplayer was just as retarded though (if jumping in with randoms).
I'm not sure why Most Wanted is getting so much hate. Like I said, driving wise, it's essentially Burnout. Open world, smashing through gates and billboards, takedowns, etc. The only thing that's missing that makes this NOT Burnout is the Road Rage events where you cause as much damage as possible (but this is technically a NFS game, so I can see why that stuff was left out).
My ONLY gripe with MW is that the races are more frustrating. It's not a gamebreaker for me though. I thought Burnout was super easy, and this one is definitely not. At least not right off the bat. I don't really recall losing that many races in Burnout, and if I did, it definitely wasn't more than once or twice.
IMO, the rubber-banding is almost a necessity in this game. Here's why: All the cars are essentially available from the start. The "object" of the single player campaign is to work you're way up the Most Wanted list. It's achieved by taking down racers/cars of increasing difficulty. But if you find one of the high performance "super cars" right off the bat, the first few races would just end up being ridiculously easy... unless the AI was able to compensate somehow. The #10 Most Wanted car is some kind of mediocre Alfa Romeo. If I'm in a Dodge Viper or Corvette, that race shouldn't even be close. It's a fine line between making it TOO easy and making it somewhat challenging so you're not just blowing through the events in a couple hours.

I played for about an hour last night, and I don't get the hate either. It's a prettier Burnout Paradise with some cop stuff thrown in. I hope to try out the multiplayer this weekend, since I've heard good things about it.

As a huge Burnout nerd who was highly ranked in Revenge, I can promise you that Burnout and MW are not exactly the same. Download the Burnout demos...they are similar but Burnout handles more arcadish.

I own Burnout: Paradise. Played it plenty, believe me.
As far as I know, Burnout Revenge is not even on PS3. Regardless, pretty much all the specific comparisons being made here are between Burnout: Paradise and Most Wanted. Even the thread title is comparing the two. The control/feel is exactly the same between Paradise and Most Wanted, IMO. I can't speak for any of the other Burnout titles.
I apologize for the confusion, but anytime I say "Burnout", I specifically mean "Burnout: Paradise".

After putting some time into it, I'm starting to figure out the tricks to winning races and evading cops. This game is officially AWESOME in my opinion. I love it.
For anyone having trouble, it helps significantly if you just focus on using one car at a time. At first I was just jumping in every car I could find and trying the different races for each, but I found myself crashing a ton, and the cops were kicking my ass in the "most wanted" events. Basically it was kind of overwhelming at first because there's so many cars, and they all have unique races. The menu system is a little tricky at first, and there's really no instructions to explain it. I was basically just driving around like an idiot.
I decided to just pick one car and stick with it. I went with the Porsche Carrera, which is what the game starts you out with. None of the races for that car are too difficult. It's a fast car, but not insanely fast, so it's not too difficult to keep under control. Whatever car you like, the first thing you should do is try to get gold in the five races and get it fully upgraded. Even if you only finish second in a race, you may unlock a mod that gives you just enough of a boost to get gold the next time. Once you unlock mods, they all have specific challenges that unlock "Pro" versions which make the mod even better. Once I started unlocking upgrades for the Porsche I was consistently winning races in 1 or 2 tries. After I got the Porsche fully upgraded, I moved onto a different car and it was inifintely easier because I understood what the hell I needed to do to win.
Plus, if you get at least silver in the five races for a specific car, you unlock re-inflate tires for that car. Those tires pretty much make the cops a non-factor in the most wanted events.

Just got the game last night and immediately went online. I love that they adjusted the challenges so that if you meet at a specific location and some doofus is messing around, he'll automatically be transported after a certain time. Also everyone doesn't have to participate to complete the challenges. The more you do participate, the more you are rewarded.
It's got everything I liked about Paradise, Billboards, gates, speedtraps. Now how do you find where all the ones you are missin? In Burnout it told you how many you've found in each area. This game I can't find any sort of info. Anyone know? Am I missing a screen buried in the menu somewhere?

Well, I played some this morning. I mostly liked it. It certainly has a Burnout Paradise feel to it. One thing that really irritated me is that after a few races I had over 60,000 points and was trying to track down my first Most Wanted racer. I checked Autolog for a New Challenge, it said I had to enter my online code. So I figured, why not and entered it. After i finished redeeming the code, I was racing again with 21,000 points. I don't know what happened. I assumed it saved after races and such, but I guess not. Sucks.
Also, is there any way to restart or exit a race after you start it, because I wasn't able to find one. In Paradise, you just stopped for a bit, but that doesn't work here.

Pressing right on the d-pad brings up the quick change menu. I believe there's retry and quit options in there while a race is active.

I finished the "story" in single player (beat all the most wanted cars). It definitely was NOT as hard as it seemed at first. Like I said earlier, if you upgrade a car fully, the most wanted races are pretty easy. Now it's on to billboard and gate smashing time!

Yes, that actually does work. I didn't see the Easy Drive option during racing and just assumed it was disabled.

I used the Porsche to beat all the Most Wanted races up to and including #3 (which is the Bugatti Veyron). Once I knocked the Bugatti out, I switched to that because that car is stupid fast. I used the Bugatti to finish up #2 and #1.
But the Porsche is good enough to beat the Bugatti, so I probably could've used it all the way to the top. Make sure it's fully upgraded. That's important. It makes a big difference. Especially with re-inflate tires. I had trouble with the very first Most Wanted race too... until I unlocked all the upgrades. After that, the only Most Wanted race I had to attempt more than once was the Bugatti one. But I knocked him out on my second attempt.

I've been restarting events by pressing Start as well, either during the race or after it ends. I also like that you CAN start an event without having to be at the right spot, by using the menu.

I'm liking it so far. Not as much as Burnout Paradise but its more of what I was hoping Hot Pursuit would be. I thought the cop chases in Hot Pursuit were great but there weren't enough of them whereas in the new Most Wanted the cops are a constant presence. The map is a bit weak though as far as variety of areas compared to Burnout. I think most of the city areas and the highways look the same with not enough difference to know where you are while going 150MPH with cops chasing your tail.

I think there's something extremely dishonest and unrealistic about cops who sit side by side on the side of the road and watch 7 NPC racers speed by without budging, but rush into action and start setting up roadblocks when you finally cross their line of sight.

How about them driving on the wrong side of the highway into oncoming traffic to slam into you head on? That's a little ridiculous. Or when you're doing 190+MPH and there's a cop right on your ass the whole time (in a SUV-type vehicle no less). Unrealistic for sure, but whatever... It's a video game. I actually enjoy smashing into them and taking them out. They never really gave me that much of a problem when I was working my way up the most wanted list.
For those that have trouble losing the wanted level, if you get out of the "hot zone" circle and start the cooldown process, quickly find a place to stop the car and press L3 (not sure if that's a button on Xbox, but it's pushing in the left analog stick on PS3). That shuts off the motor and the cooldown meter drops about 10x faster than the normal rate. Makes it much easier to evade the pursuit. If you continue to drive around, the meter drops much slower and there's a good chance you'll randomly come across another cop and start the whole chase all over again.

I never asked for realism in an arcade racer but even I was laughing when I ran over spike strips and slowed down to 20mph and the cops still didn't shut me down. They just kept driving along side me and ramming me the whole time until I was able to drive through a repair shop to fix the tires. Then I was able to out drive them again.

There's one of those Speed Run races later on that can only be done with the Bugatti Veyron (most wanted #3) or the Koenigsegg Agera (most wanted #1). The avg speed has to be 155 mph for gold. It includes an off road section which slows you down dramatically... and the pursuit level is 6 the entire time. It's incredibly difficult. It's the ONLY race I have left for the "Second is Nothing" trophy/achievement. I've probably attempted it 50 times. Hardest race in the game for me, by far.

Thanks. One minute after my rant I switched from long gears to short gears to achieve a higher speed --- My very next run was 120mph. Other races have become extremely difficult now. I need to get the run flat tires by "drifting" for 5000 yards. I have no idea how to drift and the in-game manual doesn't say a damn thing about it.

Yup. One of the best places to do this is at the hangar. It's off the highway in the northeast part of the map. It has a bunch of busted up planes all over the place. But there is a big enough area in the middle where you can drift around in a big circle for as long as you want. Very easy to get 5000yds without ever taking your finger off the gas.

If you didn't like Burnout: Paradise, then you probably wouldn't like this. As been said all over this thread, it's almost the same, but with cops thrown in.
Just like Burnout: Paradise wasn't well received by the true Burnout fans, this one doesn't seem to be getting the love from the hard core Need for Speed fans.
I personally think this game is fantastic. But I thought Burnout: Paradise was pretty awesome as well.
One of my favorite things they added was the new billboard feature. It adds a ton of replayability if people on your friends list are playing it. Instead of it being some generic billboard, it's a big picture of your friends avatar if they smashed through it further than you did (and obviously your avatar if you hold the record). It's pretty neat driving around and seeing different avatars all over the place. Obviously the more friends you have the better. And you can see all the top distances that have been recorded. It makes you want to keep busting through them trying to get a distance that will never be topped.

Yeah, I can't figure out why they put checkpoints in the races. It does kinda defeat the whole idea behind the "open world" racer. Burnout: Paradise definitely did that aspect better. It was get from A to B any way you can and the fastest route almost always involved an off-road shortcut. Then again, criterion is saying this isn't a B:P sequel so I guess it's unfair to compare them even though they're similar in so many other aspects.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted Ultimate Speed Pack Announced and Detailed
EA and Criterion have today announced the Need for Speed: Most Wanted Ultimate Speed Pack, which will be injecting even more high speed into the game, with a selection of desirable, super-fast rides.
The Ultimate Speed Pack will unleash the $4 million McLaren F1 LM, the Lamborghini Aventador J, the Pagani Zonda R, Bugatti’s "reigning world speed champion", the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse and Hennessey’s "savage 275 mile-an-hour ragtop beast", the Venom GT.
These five new cars should ensure that you're able to blast your friends' Autolog times, which should make you popular. Meanwhile, the Hennessey Venom GT gets its very own Most Wanted Racer event, meaning you'll have to earn the 275mph beast to drive it.
Included with the DLC will also be 25 new High Speed Races and Speed Runs, as well as over 70 new speed-themed milestones, alongside a host of extra rewards and unlocks. You'll be able to grab the Need for Speed: Most Wanted Ultimate Speed Pack on December 18th. Pricing has yet to be confirmed.

I can't find anything online to help me with a billboard issue.
I have found all the billboards and earned the trophy ... but, there are 5 "special" billboards, I think they are called Speedwall billboards... When I bust through any of them, I get a message that I've found 4/5. I can't find anything online to show me what the heck these are. I know that the 4 I've found have a different image on them prior to me breaking them, meaning, it's not the normal "DICE" or "VISERAL" billboard, but an actual picture, like the cover of the game.
They are not listed on any of the billboard maps either.
The two that I can think of are:
Just East of the airport, where the sections of the highway split to one going up and one going down. The ramp is right between the two if you are heading East.
On the roof with the trees next to the park that has the huge rings that you can drive up.
Anyone know where all 5 of these are?

I think the NFS single player "campaign" is actually better than Burnout, but unfortunately any progress you make pimping out cars doesn't carry over into multiplayer. And the entire selection of cars isn't immediately available online either. In single player all the cars are available from the start, it's just a matter of finding them. When you go online, you might have to put in some time and level up before you get the car you really like.
