Comicbook spin-off merchandising... & Moore...

Forget about the prequels -- I'm gonna go all BLT up in this bitch:

Alan Moore Will Love This Officially Licensed Watchmen Toaster

Warner Brothers has unveiled their latest Watchmen tie-in and it’s a toaster. Let me say that again: A toaster. In addition to ripping out Alan Moore’s soul and converting regular bread to crispy bread, the officially branded toaster officially brands your toast — presumably with the logo displayed on the side of the device. This makes Before Watchmen look like an exciting, artistically respectful project.

In fairness, DC comics had almost nothing to do with this and the blame falls entirely upon Warner Brothers who plan to sell a number of toasters based off existing properties. According to Gamma Squad, we can look forward to toasters based on A Nightmare on Elm Street, A Christmas Story, Friday the 13th , Friends, The Goonies, Gremlins, Little Shop of Horrors, Mad Magazine, Where the Wild Things Are, and The Wizard of Oz.

While arguably the worst thing to happen to this venerable comic series, I have to say that I am looking forward to the official Friends toaster. But only if it burns a ghastly, horrific image of Chandler into my toast. That would just be perfect.

Re: DC to publish Watchmen prequel?

i would only buy this if it toasted a different rorshach test on each slice of bread though. a static one is not clever enough. (jk, i would never actually buy it).

^^^^^^
I've ordred two. One to toast bread with and the other to sell later for a mint!

Re: DC to publish Watchmen prequel?

What's funny is that something like that would be worth something, since they probably won't make that many. Seriously, what's the market for a Rorschach toaster?

A Watchmen toaster? Seriously? I'm debating on whether I want to read the prequel series or not. The originals are so classic that I can't see how this will match up. I almost wonder if Warner is doing this in part so they can try to do a prequel to the movie to tie in with this..

I think this is all about DC Comics wanting to sell comics. Watchmen was a box office disappointment to Warner, who was hoping for a huge blockbuster on par with Batman.

Didn't DC Direct solicit Watchmen figures a few years ago (or show prototypes) only to be shot down by Moore when they went for his approval? I thought they only got around that with the movie figures because it was based on the movie likeness...

The movie DID help them sell a lot of copies of the comic, though.

DC could've released the figures but respected Moore and Gibbons' wishes.

“DC initiated plans for a fifteenth anniversary celebration of Watchmen in collaboration with Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Subsequently, they’ve informed us that they’d prefer not to participate and it wouldn’t be a party without them. Therefore, DC will not proceed with its previously announced plans for a Watchmen hardcover or Watchmen action figures.”
The word going around is that Paul Levitz was the champion of do-right-by-Watchmen at DC, refusing to allow any sequel, prequel, or anything else under his watch. Not sure if the figures fall under that as well...not wanting to rock the boat or whatever. Not sure if any of that's true, actually. Supposedly Before Watchmen first started getting underway just about the moment Levitz was out the door, though...

And here come the action figures...

About Club Black Freighter

For the first time ever, Mattel proudly offers our new Watchmen Club Black Freighter, a subscription to figures inspired by one of the all-time greatest comics! A total of six figures will be released throughout the year, resulting in a collection of all six Watchmen team members by year’s end. Mattel worked hard to secure exclusive rights to these comic-based figures and we’ll treat them right: each one will be sculpted by the Four Horsemen and comparable in articulation, scale and level of detail to our Masters of the Universe® Classics Club Eternia® and DC Universe Club Infinite Earths 6” figures. Most come with accessories (for example, Rorschach will include a gas gun) and every figure will arrive with an authentic Watchmen logo base.

Meh..I'd rather see a company like DC Direct handling these than Mattel personally.

Re: Comicbook spin-off merchandising... & Moore...

4 Horseman sculpts should make these worthwhile, plus they'll have more articulation than the normal DC Direct line. And with the Matty Collector's exclusive plus their ridiculous shipping, it'll be just like overpaying for DC Directs at a LCBS.

Re: Comicbook spin-off merchandising... & Moore...

Ah, well even so I don't know that I really want to commit to having to buy all six figures for like $150. I'd consider it if they were up for sale individually (which I guess they are but only provided they don't sell out) and just get the ones I want but as is no thanks. Especially without even seeing them first. Plus even though the DC Direct figures don't have a ton of articulation they're still some of the nicer figures around at a reasonable price if you ask me.

Toaster is only worthwhile if it toasts Rorshach's face onto the bread, but in different patterns each time.

I have an extra for sale. Only 25 percent above what I paid for it. Let me know!
