Cleaning out Jules' DVD shelf:Irreversible
Okay, last time, you guys helped me out and I tossed Troy out not due to the poll vote but the posts of the people that just didnt dig it. So now, let's talk about Irreversible.I've had this movie for years and heard various things about it. Life goes on and it stayed there collecting dust. Until one day,I noticed it on the shelf and popped it in. So, I decided to check it out. The movie was great, I thought it was very good. But on the other hand, this movie is so painful. I have a very high tolerance for on screen violence but the rape scene made me squirm. I think it was the combination of the length of the scene and just the repugnant shit the asshole was saying while raping her. This makes me single it out for a vote here because well, I'm not sure if I'm going to watch this movie again mainly due to that very scene. I'm torn and confused. Help me out.

Forgot to put a poll. Son of a bitch! Well, the options would've been yes, no, or stuff it in twikoff's mouth while you rape him so his yells will be muffled.

I liked the Bangalter score and the beat down in the beginning (or end). Other than that, not a movie I like to just pop in randomly. I'd say toss it.

I never did buy it. It reminds me in some ways of another excellent but difficult to watch film called The War Zone. I did buy that one on DVD and frankly never watched it again. There are just some movies you only need to see once, no matter how artfully they were created.

Seen it twice, and while I thought it was a great film, I have no desire to ever watch it again.

Brilliant movie. Even if you don't feel like you might not watch it again, it should be part of your permanent collection. Who knows, perhaps you can lend it to friends and family, get their feedback etc....you may want to revisit it one day for any number of reasons.
Rule of thumb: If it's a great distinctive controversial film....Hold on to it. These types of movies come about so seldomly I'd say proudly keep it as part of your permanent collection.

You can also use it to clear the house if any annoying friends or family members show up.

Haha keep it indeed. I saw it on DVD back when it first came out and thought it was great, but yea, that rape scene is fuckin harsh. I too thought I'd never see it again, but about a year ago I saw it again on instant watch with someone wo wanted to see it.
Was still great, definitely held up. But yea, don't think I'll be revisiting it. Never thought a movie with a nude Monica Bellucci could be so unsexy, but here we are.

Pick yourself up a copy of I Stand Alone (the director's first full length) and Enter the Void.
Watch all three films in release order. (Take however long you want.)
It's pretty cool to watch his take on life and death evolve over just those three films.

Re: Cleaning out Jules' DVD shelf:Irreversible
I've seen Enter the Void and really like that movie. There's a hopefulness to it whereas when I watch Irreversible and see the "hopeful" ending, I can't help but feel depressed after knowing(and watching) what happens after. I do think Irreversible is incredible film making though. Never seen I Stand Alone so I'll have to check it out. I actually saw Enter the Void first so I pretty much am doing the exact opposite viewing order of what you've recommended.

I recommend you see the prequel to I Stand Alone, it is a 40 minute film called Carne first.
Then watch I Stand Alone. It is a great film , but don't expect any hope from that one.
Then you need to see the first couple of minutes of Irreversible again.
The scene in the hotel has the main character from Carne & ISA.

Watch it in reverse before you toss it.
