What do you consider to be the 5 best action movies from the last fifteen years?

My list would be:

1. The Avengers (2012)
2. The Raid (2011)
3. Battle Royale (2000)
4. Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
5. Face/Off (1997)

Just missing the cutoff would be The Dark Knight.

How does the Dark Knight not make the cut when it was released 4 years ago?

Probably because he doesn't think it's in the top 5, hence it missed the cut.

Good god, no it doesn't. The first Bad Boys is great. The sequel is shit.

I was severely underwhelmed by Battle Royale. I think because it had been so hyped that once I finally saw it I thought "that's it?"

My list:

1. The Avengers
2. Ronin
3. Taken
4. Fast Five
5. The Bourne Identity

I could probably swap up 2 or 3 of those with plenty of others...but that's what I get from looking at my collection.

Alright...I think we need to properly define an action movie. I love the Avengers. A lot. But it's not an action movie in the strict genre sense. It's a Superhero movie. Those things tend to incorporate a lot. Nor would TDK be in that...then you have some genre breaking convention kind of things like this film. It's a superhero movie..but...it's a lot more of a crime film than a superhero movie, so pick and choose on that one. So let's try to get a proper definition of what we're looking for cuz otherwise..way too many things can be an action movie. But then..I would call The Matrix an action movie as well.

For me?

In no order,

Universal Soldier: Regeneration
The Raid
Rambo (Or John Rambo whichever floats your boat, great BDs too)
The Matrix
SPL

Also are we actually grading the actual action as well? Let's get critical, yo.

My top 2:

FACE/OFF
KILL BILL VOL. 1

If there are any others that come close, I can't think of them right now. I like the TRANSPORTER films (well, the first two) and CRANK 1 & 2, but not enough to put them in such a list. I'd put THE MATRIX in there, but it's more of a science fiction film with action than an action film. The last great Hong Kong action films were done in the mid-90s. The most recent one I might put in such a list, SO CLOSE (2002), is one I'd need to see again to see if it holds up.
I like KUNG FU CHEFS and YO YO GIRL COP a lot, but more for their casts than for their action.

SPL

What is SPL?

1. The Matrix-It's just as much an action as a science fiction film.
2. Born to Fight-This movie is fucking crazy. Love it!
3. Face/Off
4. The Raid
5. A tie between Bad Boys 2, Hot Fuzz(yeah, I know it's comedy) and Fast Five.

P.S.-I'm sure there's more I'll kick myself for not including when I see your guys' lists.

What is SPL?

An action movie where you get Donnie Yen vs. Wu Jing....and Donnie Yen vs. Sammo Hung. Aka Kill Zone here in the states.

also..when did Children of Men become an action movie?

I've had SPL on DVD for years. I don't know why I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. Thanks for the nudge, though.

Superhero movie or not, I'd be willing to bet a lot of people would put the Avengers on a list like this RIGHT NOW, but in a few years it'll fall off the list.

The Avengers has a very Dark Knight vibe right now. Both movies are perfect in pretty much everybody's mind and the rose colored glasses stay on for a while and then reality starts to set in and people realize that the movies are good, probably even very good, but not the masterpieces they thought they were when they first came out.

Don't get me wrong...I like both movies very much, but I just remember when the Dark Knight first came out, everybody was like "best movie ever" Now, after a few years have passed, it's obvious that people's minds have changed and they're looking at it more realistically. I guarantee that if this question was asked even up to a year or so after the Dark Knight came out, it would be on pretty much everybody's lists. I don't see it on anybody's list yet and most of the movies listed came out before the Dark Knight so it's not like it got bumped by a newer movie. I think the same will happen to the Avengers. Very good movie, but not as great as so many people seem to think it is right now.

I agree with most of what you said...but I still think The Dark Knight was an Oscar-calibur movie. I don't think that much of The Avengers RIGHT NOW, let alone down the road. It was a fun "popcorn flick" - nothing more/nothing less.

Oscar calibur not in script at least. Direction? Sure. Not in script.

I hate myself for forgetting Kung Fu Hustle. Okay, tie Kung fu hustle for second on my list with Born to Fight. Then tie The Bourne Trilogy and Rambo for third on my list. That's my top five.
