St. Louis still has the highest run differential in the National League. And they're a .500 team. That's both strange and sad.

Not sure if you guys saw, buy Jamie Moyer was released by the Rockies yesterday. Hard to imagine somebody else taking a flyer on the guy but I kinda hope it'll happen. He wasn't very good for Colorado, but still damn impressive he made the team at 49. I wonder if maybe he'd be better suited as a middle reliever than a starter... but I guess there are plenty of those available who aren't 49.

Justin Smoak got AL player of the week while Brendan Ryan earned AL defensive player of the month--no, I didn't know that award existed either.

Thinking about the draft today reminds me of when the Mariners blew the top pick by winning meaningless games on the last weekend of the season. They missed out on Strasburg, which looked bad, but then looked better last year when he was out and their pick, Dustin Ackley, looked good. Now Strasburg is good again and Ackley is a .248-hitting 2B with little power or SB. He's only played around a full season so it will be interesting to watch. 142 G, .263/.338/.398, 70 R, 27 2B, 8 3B, 10 HR, 56 RBI, 63 BB, 126 K, 12 SB, 1 CS. Mostly decent numbers, and the EBH shows potential, but the K rate is kind of alarming.

Wow, the Astros did go for Carlos Correia, the Puerto Rican SS. He'd been slotted somewhere in the top 10 but there were reports he was rising.

davidh777

Orioles pick Kevin Gausman, and the Cubs would have a chance at Mark Appel unless the Royals take him

davidh777

And KC picks Kyle Zimmer. Two college pitchers as if Appel had been already picked earlier. Will the Cubs bite?

EDIT: Unintentional pun there

A 21-run salute to the resurgent Justin Smoak

Posted by Larry Stone

For once, it's time to praise Justin Smoak, not to bury him.

When Smoak went 0-for-3 against the Tigers on May 9 at Safeco Field, it dropped his average to .173. His on-base percentage was .229. He was slugging .264. His OPS was .492 -- 33 games into the season. Obviously, unacceptable across the board. The burning question was whether or not Smoak should go down to Tacoma. He had already lost his cleanup spot. Certainly, his spot as a regular was in legitimate danger.

Manager Eric Wedge stood behind Smoak, and so did Jack Zduriencik. Whether or not it was part wishful thinking, who knows, but now they are being vindicated. I'm not going to declare Smoak "cured", and obviously the sample size is small, but the results of the last three weeks are highly encouraging, a needed glimpse of the Smoak potential that was being to slip out of our memory bank.

Starting on May 11, when he went 3-for-4 against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, Smoak is hitting .319 over his last 18 games (23-for-72). His on-base percentage is .355. He's slugging .597, with six homers (one every 12 at-bats). His OPS is .952. Suddenly, Smoak's season projects to 28 homers and 83 RBI, which I'd bet every Mariner fan would sign up for right now. Last night's two-homer, six-RBI performance in the Mariners' 21-8 rout was downright majestic.

Here comes the caution flag: Smoak's overall numbers are still highly mediocre: .231/.278/.396 (.674 OPS). Three hot weeks does not a revival make. And like virtually the entire team, he still has to show he can hit at Safeco Field, where he is hitting .188/.233/.319 (.552), compared to .257/.306/.442 (.748) on the road.

But Smoak desperately needed to show skeptics - - and show himself -- a glimpse of the guy whom the Mariners envision as one of the centerpieces of their lineup moving forward, the guy who was the key to the Cliff Lee trade. And we have seen big flashes of that potential in recent days. A revived Smoak certainly offers Eric Wedge much more palatable lineup options. A 3-4-5 of Kyle Seager, Jesus Montero and Smoak is something to feel pretty good about, if he can approximate the version of Smoak we're seeing now.

So let's not get too giddy here. Two-thirds of the season still remain, and this hot streak might become a distant memory if Smoak regresses. But consider the heat he had been taking, Smoak deserves credit for pulling himself out of a slump many thought would bury him.

Spending limits change the game in baseball draft
Phil Rogers On Baseball

9:57 p.m. CDT, June 3, 2012

A year ago, some team might have made an offer that rocked Alex Young's world. The Pirates, Nationals or Red Sox, maybe even the Cubs, might have dug deep for the left-hander from Carmel High School.

They still could, of course, but 2012 is definitely not 2011 in regard to the baseball draft.

Young, a 6-3 left-hander whose fastball is creeping toward the mid-90s, is the top prospect in Illinois, according to Baseball America. He's what scouts call a lottery ticket, meaning he could turn into a reasonable facsimile of Cole Hamels or not develop enough polish to get past the low minors. That makes him a lot like Dillon Maples.

Maples, a highly regarded pitcher from Southern Pines, N.C., was headed to the University of North Carolina as a punter on the football team and pitcher for the baseball team before the Cubs selected him in the 14th round of last year's draft. Owner Tom Ricketts had given scouting director Tim Wilken the funding to be unusually aggressive in the draft, and the Cubs changed Maples' plans with an offer of $2.5 million, immediately making him one of the most intriguing prospects in their farm system.

Because they were willing to spend more than most other teams — $12 million overall, which ranked behind only the Pirates, Nationals and Royals — the Cubs were able to accumulate more than their share of talent in last year's draft. It was a phenomenon that had gone on for at least a decade — one that accelerated when Theo Epstein became the Red Sox's general manager — and one that Commissioner Bud Selig and some owners, including White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf — had long lamented because it distorted the purpose of the draft.

The draft was created in 1965 as a backlash against teams like the Yankees and Cardinals, with the goal of allowing the weakest big-league teams to add the best high school and college players. Selig tried to restore that by creating so-called slot recommendations for signings, but as the years went by only a handful of teams — the White Sox, Twins, Marlins, Braves and Phillies among them — paid attention to the recommendations. But that changed last November.

Selig succeeded in getting the players' union to agree to spending limits in the amateur draft and in international signings, and the new rules kick in Monday night, when the first round of the draft will be held at the MLB Network studios in Secaucus, N.J.

The Astros have the first overall pick, and are expected to choose between Stanford right-hander Mark Appel and Georgia high school outfielder Byron Buxton. The Cubs are picking sixth, seven spots ahead of the White Sox, and will be overjoyed if Puerto Rican shortstop Carlos Correa is available. If he's not, they are expected to take outfielder Albert Almora or one of two highly regarded college pitchers, LSU's Kevin Gausman or the University of San Francisco's Kyle Zimmer.

With Ricketts opening his wallet, the Cubs spent $9.2 million more than the White Sox in the 2011 draft, which is why Sox general manager Ken Williams has said the new collective bargaining agreement will be a good thing for the Sox.

Teams have been given a spending limit for the draft, with the total depending on how many picks teams have in the first 10 rounds and how high those picks are. The Cubs have been given $7.9 million to spend on their 12 top-10 picks, while the White Sox get $5.9 million for their 11 top-10 picks.

Epstein was steamed when the new rules were announced in December. But the Cubs believe they still can land a difference-making player or two through solid scouting.

"It becomes more of a true scouting competition,'' said Jason McLeod, the Cubs' senior vice president player development/scouting. "That gets your juices flowing.''

In the last five years, the White Sox spent only $18.3 million on the draft, the lowest total among the 30 teams and almost $34 million less than the Pirates, who have been the biggest spenders. That's the biggest reason that the Sox have a farm system that doesn't get much love from national analysts.

"The draft is the biggest bargain in talent acquisition,'' Baseball America's Jim Callis said on WSCR-AM 670 last week. "If you're willing to spend $10 million a year, you can compete with anybody. I just don't believe Jerry Reinsdorf believes in paying amateur players.''

Callis said he'll be watching to see if the White Sox opt to spend their full allotment in the draft, as they spent only $2.8 million last year.

"I'll believe the White Sox aren't going to be the cheapest team in the draft when I see it,'' Callis said.

It will be a shock if the name of an Illinois-based player is called Monday night, when teams will go through the first 60 picks (the first round and supplemental first round). The majority of the picks in the 40-round draft will be made Tuesday and Wednesday. That's when Carmel's Young, Southern Illinois first baseman Chris Serritella (Loyola Academy), Niles West third baseman Kevin Ross, Illinois right-hander Matt Milroy (Marmion Academy) and Oak Forest right-hander Kyle Funkhouser are likely to be picked.

Barring a huge offer, Young is expected to honor his commitment to TCU. And that huge offer seems less likely to come with the new spending limits in place.

You never know, though. If you look hard enough, you can always find a loophole.

Astros might have had a tremendous day one draft. I liked Correa (SS) better than Appel (P)- I don't think Appel was an obvious #1 pick and all things being equal the position player is lower risk.

It also allowed them to take a pitcher (McCullers) in the sandwich round that was originally in the top10-20 on many draft boards. They picked him at 41. They should probably save some of their pick 1 money on Correa, which probably will allow them to sign McCullers. Once he dropped below 15-20 I think many teams feared they would not be able to sign him without going over the limits and potentially forfeiting a #1 pick next year.

MLB.com has been annoying as hell today. I hate websites that auto start video, especially when they give you no way to stop it!

I'm off looking at something else and all of a sudden this damn video starts in the background, forcing me to hear this crap.

^ It's also a rookie making his 8th or 9th career start. I wonder with him at 107 pitches thru 7 how long they will let him go. If he's around 120-125 after 8 I would not be stunned if they pulled him.

The A's manager is probably praying for a 6-10 pitch inning or a hit in the 8th.

EDIT: And Michael Young bails out Bob Melvin with a single to lead off the 8th.

Along the same lines, I've read that Bor-ass was a possible factor in the drop page since he was likely to ask for the same as last year's #1, Gerritt Cole, despite the rules being a lot more restrictive now.

Washington lets CF Craig Gentry pitch the 8th to save the bullpen. Wash will go to just about any length to avoid having a position player pitch. I don't think he's let it happen in 6 years. Things are bad in Texas.

Parker allowed 4 baserunners with his 1 hit, 3 BBs, but got two double-plays and a CS, so he only faced 25 batters in 8 innings. Pretty darn impressive start for the 2nd win of his career.

What's your opinion on Appel? Scouting reports make him sound like a similar pitcher to Gerrit Cole. I'm kinda torn on this pick, on the one hand they got a top 5 projected guy at #8, but there's also the fact that high drafted Stanford pitchers have basically busted (except for Mussina). Oh yeah, Boras gets to tangle with the Pirates over the signing bonus again.

I liked what I read about Barrett Barnes since the Pirates need ANY type of hitting in their minors. Whatever I think about Appel, it sure as hell beats the guy a lot of people projected to the Pirates a while back--Deven Marrero. I'm glad that guy wasn't around for their pick at #45.

I liked Courntey Williams for the White Sox at #11. First HS player picked by the Sox in the first round since 2001. Not a big fan of David Dahl who went a pick earlier to the Rox. I cringe whenever I read that a player's speed is the #1 strength.

Lucas Giolioto was an interesting pick for the Nats assuming the medicals check out. They've been pretty lucky with Matt Purke, Rendon and now Giolioto this year. Although it's probably very likely that all 3 of them will probably need to have surgeries at some point, I guess picking at #16 you can take gambles like that.

I thought the Rangers got a steal with Joey Gallo at #38.

LOL WTF! I assume he was saving that for a key situation.I think if he could throw that pitch at will, he would. It's only the second time he's had movement like that all season, so it must be some perfect combination of grip, release, motion, finger-sweat and humidity.

The crazy part was where Torrealba was setting up to catch it on the outside part of the plate... and it almost hits the batter.
