View Full Version : Favorite minor characters?

Jules Winfield

We all have our favorite movie characters but I would think that they usually tend to be main characters. Either heroes or villains. But sometimes it's the small characters, the ones with only a little bit of screen time that help flavor a movie and give it that extra kick. The movie that got me thinking about this was True Romance. There's a load of characters that are in that movie that come in and make the movie truly focus on them for the minutes they're on. Floyd, Drexl, I forget Christopher Walken's and Dennis Hopper's character names. Even Gandolfini shows up and makes a quick strong and imposing presence. I have trouble thinking up of other movies with memorable minor characters. That's why I ask you...what's your favorite minor characters?

The two agents, Whitney and Russ from Rush Hour. I'd like to see an actual investigation that they do as a team.

Kevin Spacey in Se7en

I've never understood why people consider that a spoiler. How come it also isn't a spoiler to reveal R Lee Armey and Brad Pitt are in it?

On topic, I wish they had given Albert Brooks a few clams during the making of Taxi Driver to shoot a movie about his character when he goes home from the campaign office.

Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby...or am I getting the wrong meaning of minor?

because it is. Nobody knew shit about that character and then boom. It's him.

Pitt and Armey are general characters. They're in there, they matter, they've nothing to hide for. That guy though? Yeah. Mystery.

It's not like the mutha fucka makes an appearance before the audience first sees him. He could be a sergeant for all the people know who haven't seen the movie.

For suspense purposes he requested not to be credited in the opening titles or in any advertising for the film.
His name appears in the closing credits

You understand John Doe and Kevin Spacey are two different people? I don't see how knowing Kevin Spacey is in the movie (or that Kevin Spacey plays the killer) changes anything about the character and the movie, but whatever.

true but the answer is this:

For suspense purposes he requested not to be credited in the opening titles or in any advertising for the film.
His name appears in the closing credits

And it works very well for those who haven't seen it.

 It's not even like Kevin Spacey was Kevin Spacey when that movie came out. What a fucking ego.

Hmmm...

I liked Harvey Keitel, Eric Stolz, and Chris Walken in 'Pulp Fiction'. All were excellent small roles.

How about the train security man 'Woodcock' in 'Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid'?

Edward Noton's uncredited role as the King of Jerusalem in 'Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut'.

Brando in 'Superman', he made a huge impact on the film. Also Glenn Ford in that. Without those two small roles being done so well by great actors it would not have been the same movie.

Val Kilmer in 'True Romance'.

Ben Johnson in 'Shane'.

Hell there's too many to list.

Every time I think of someone for this thread, I realize they're supporting characters, but not minor characters. Everyone I like in THE WILD BUNCH who's not a member of the title band is still a major character no matter how small their part. I'm thinking particularly of the Mexican officer played by Alfonso Arau ("That's very smart, you damn gringos."). Important character, not a minor one.

So I thought of Peckinpah's THE GETAWAY and the parts played by Dub Taylor (operator of the "safe" hotel in El Paso) and Slim Pickens (garbage collector who helps the getaway couple at the end). Are those minor characters or major characters with only a few scenes?

Yeah, it seemed like he didn't get big until the following year, when he won the Oscar and The Usual Suspects developed a following on video. Maybe he thought he was on the verge of breaking out.

I just thought of another one I like: Mose Harper in The Searchers.

 It's not even like Kevin Spacey was Kevin Spacey when that movie came out. What a fucking ego.He certainly was. I "spoiled" the movie for my date when we first saw it in the theater, because I recognized his voice on the phone. I said, "Hey, that's Kevin Spacey!" Still, it really isn't a spoiler other than if you know it's him, it eliminates anyone else you've seen, which is where most crime thrillers usually go (the killer being someone in the main cast the whole time).
