A lovely read - a real glimpse into a vast tract of theatrical history.

As a contrast a fascinating window into a lost period of television history.

What did you think of the Lost City of Z. I read it when i went over and spent some time in China. An interesting read right? Kind of spooky how those guys would enter the Amazon, and sometimes just disappear. I liked the book a lot.

I really liked it. I thought the reveal of the treasure was very interesting and probably true.

I am glad you enjoyed it man. Man the bit where Fawcett hooked up with that dude who explored the Arctic, was my favorite part. I was so able to see what was going on in my mind.

Makes me want to reread the book.

Curious to find out your thoughts on this book and the others in the series. I really like her other series that she wrote under he own name, the October Daye series. The Mira Grant books are on my to-read pile.

I like zombie books so you have to consider that. Anyway I liked Feed more than I thought I would. I only really read it because I want to vote on the Hugos and the second book is nominated. I thought the blogger thing would be much more annoying that it was in reality. The second book, Deadline, I thought was very enjoyable, even though it had middle of series syndrome (left things kind of unfinished). In fact, I probably enjoyed it most of the Hugo books for this year I've read so far (still got George RR Martin and Embassytown to read though). The third book was ok, but got a little overly goofy in places.

As a contrast a fascinating window into a lost period of television history.I listened to this recently when the radio version was repeated. Very enjoyable.

I'm currently reading "The Naming of the Beasts", Mike Carey's fifth Felix Castor novel, a mostly London-centric noir urban fantasy, having read volumes 2-4 during a recent holiday.

Although I think Jim Butcher still has the overall edge, IMNSHO this is mostly because, as well as being a lot further along with his series, Butcher paints on a larger tapestry - incorporating all manner of magical elements - as compared to Carey's primary focus on the dead. Definitely worth it, though, if you're accepting of the potential "limitations" of an exorcist protagonist and enjoy a back story that unfolds with each new volume. (Carey looks to have written these so that you can jump in at any stage by recapping important elements of which you'd otherwise be unaware).

I just finished What Dreams May Come by Matheson. I like the movie and I liked I Am Legend, so I was excited. The book wasn't very good, unfortunately. A lot of it reads like a lecture in New Age metaphysical belief.

Nice. Thanks for the reply. Under her actual name, she has two series that I read. October Daye (5 books currently) and the book Discount Armageddon which starts a second series. I think once I finish book 4 of Game of Thrones series and book 5, I'll move on to the Feed series.

I thought this was pretty wonderful myself (though it is twenty plus years since I read it.) The film was also a worthy interpretation of the novel.

An interesting biography of three good character actors. The section on Dennis Price is particularly fine - though he endured a pretty tragic life. They really don't make solid character actors like these guys anymore.

I must say it has the butt-ugliest cover of all time - below is the second edition cover which is only marginally better.

I just finished Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago. I began in January, read briefly off and on throughout February as I concentrated on finishing the first draft of my own novel, then gorged on it before basically letting it collect dust in April and most of May. I'm still processing it all but I hope to have a review up on Goodreads and my personal blog sometime later today or tomorrow.

I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it, with the notable exception of the 20-ish pages of poetry at the very end. I hate poetry.

I didn't think myself awake enough to really write anything about Zhivago, but I just spent the last hour or so poring over it. Anyone who cares can read the whole thing on Goodreads (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/130507552) or my blog (http://travismcclain.blogspot.com/2012/06/review-doctor-zhivago.html) (the content is the same). I tried something new this time, angling more for a proper literary criticism than merely a product review. As such, it's quite lengthy and includes several spoilers so I would not advise anyone who is simply interested in the book to read.

Next up for me: No idea! I checked out the Road to Perdition graphic novel from the library and I need to read that so I can return it, but I haven't settled on another work of prose.

Thanks for the heads up. I was curious about that one. (I've never seen the movie, but kind of want to because it seems visually pretty.)

I finished Hell House last night. Creepy atmosphere in parts, but it wasn't really scary. It held my interest well enough to stick with it, but I think the hype killed it for me.

One of the least interesting autobiographies I have ever read - written in a flat clinical style. Lifelong tragedies pass by in a paragraph whilst there are endless sections on fairly minor characters in the author's life. A very strange piece indeed.

Forgot to mention, last week I checked out Stephen Mitchell's English translation of Lao-tzu's Tao Te Ching. Some of it resonated strongly with me and much of it already felt familiar. I was roundly disappointed, though, and I attribute that to Mitchell's very liberal translation manner. For instance, in one chapter, he writes of societies with "factories stockpil[ing] warheads." I am certain that was not part of Lao-tzu's original text and it took me completely out of the reading and made me suspicious of everything I read from that point onward. I came to feel I was being deceived by someone with his own agenda. It really ruined the experience for me. I'll look for a more faithful translation in the future, but I know my relationship with the Tao is already tainted by this first introduction. I could not feel more cheated (which, of course, is contrary to the philosophy of the Tao).

Saw Billy Elliot: The Musical last night with tickets a friend couldn't use, came home for (most) of the encore airing of Dallas and was still awake so I decided to begin a new book. I selected David Gilmour's memoir, The Film Club. It's about when he let his 16 year old sophomore drop out of school on the condition they watch three movies together each week. I made it through the first three chapters (ending on page 74) last night.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51WCvHnUMYL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg

So far, I can give Gilmour credit for his writing. It has been a breeze to follow, so conversational has his manner been. However, his laissez-faire permissiveness is wholly incompatible with my personal values and every other page has made me just want to slap him, his son, his son's mother and his son's girlfriends. I'm undecided so far whether to slap his wife (his son's stepmother).

It's particularly striking to me to know this was published in 2008, just as the house of cards that was our economy came tumbling down. Admittedly, I've still got 2/3+ to go, but I already have the feeling someone should be citing this as exhibit H in the case against the One Percenters for just how reckless and destructive their worldview was/is/can be.

It's not just about allowing his son to dropout, either. The TV show he worked on died, he's not even making his son take a job so he's footing all those expenses, too...and when he finally has an agreement in place to work on an hour long documentary on Viagra he celebrates immediately by taking his son and his son's mother on a vacation to Cuba. Hasn't even been paid for the Viagra documentary, which hasn't even started!

There better be an astounding payoff to all this...!
