A Washington state man fed up with a group of noisy moviegoers behind him stepped over the seat and punched a 10-year-old boy in the face.

The man, who told police he thought the person he hit was a grown man, was watching "Titanic" in 3-D with his girlfriend and had asked the people sitting behind to quiet down and stop throwing popcorn, but they laughed at him, he said.

"I got so mad that it just happened," Yong Hyun Kim, 21, told police who arrested him the night of April 11 at the AMC Kent Station 14, in Kent, a south Seattle suburb.

The 10-year-old lost a tooth and had a bloody nose in the confrontation.

Kim spent a night in the Kent city jail and appeared April 12 in King County District Court and was released, said county prosecutor's spokesman Dan Donohoe.

Kim was charged May 16 with second-degree assault. If convicted, he could be sentenced to three to nine months in jail, Donohoe said Tuesday.

The Auburn man will be arraigned May 31 at the Regional Justice Center in Kent.

A phone number for Kim could not be found, and it's unclear whether he has a lawyer.

The boy, identified in the police report as KJJ, was at the theater with three friends. They met police in the lobby. They said they were watching the movie and talking when Kim told them to be quiet. They quieted down, but KJJ says when he whispered something, Kim jumped over the seat, threw an iced drink at them and punched KJJ in the face.

Kim said something to the effect of "You know what, I paid a lot of money to see this movie," the police report said.

Kim told police the boys' behavior was worse than talking. He says they were hitting him and his girlfriend with popcorn, running back and forth in the aisle and bumping him with their arms.

"At one point Yong stepped over the seats and confronted the subjects behind him," the police report says. "Yong said he was talking to the subjects when they started laughing at him. Yong said he became so angry and swung his arm at one of the subjects and him in the face."

A manager at the theater referred a request for comment to a corporate spokesman.

"We strongly encourage guests to be respectful of their fellow moviegoers, and to report any disturbance to an AMC associate, so that we may handle it directly," AMC Theatres spokesman Ryan Noonan said in a statement. "The safety and security of our guests and associates is important to us, and we want everyone to enjoy the moviegoing experience."

Noonan said the theater's management told him no one had complained about audience behavior prior to the incident.

The interesting to behold is the 155 comments, Majority are siding with the Puncher.

Even though I wouldnt have done it myself I think the kid probably deserved to be punched but at the same time this man deserves to be punched for taking a date to see Titanic in 3D.

Why dont we just punch this guy in the face and put all of this behind us?

I don't think that violence solves anything, but deep down, way down, pegging a snotty obnoxious twatty kid puts a smile on my face

Yeah, I try to stick with the Gandhi thing whenever possible, but after being at way too many movies these days with way too many d-bags ruining it for everyone, it's pretty tough not to sympathize with the puncher. I don't have a single doubt that the kid was being obnoxious as the guy claims.

Still, I'm not sure him punching a 10 year old was quite the best way to go. In my opinion, a better move would have been to find a 13 year old in the audience and pay him $20 to go punch the 10 year old. That's how I would have handled it.

Obviously the puncher was wrong, but projecting the bad movie goers I've had the misfortune of seeing movies at the same time with onto this kid...this is a little satisfying. I really wish it was worth it for movie theaters to have ushers that would just stand in the theater and escort people out who are being disruptive.

Maybe I'm a jerk but I have no problem with what the guy did. I'd never have the guts to do something like that but if it's one thing I truly despise in life, it's brats in movies and parents who let their kids go crazy.

Why was a 10 year old going to see Titanic in 3D, anyway?

This story tells me 2 things

1. Either 3d movies are way too fucking expensive that it now causes violence, or he's a cheap fucker
2. He first threw a perfectly good iced drink at the kid before throwing down. An iced drink that probably cost him more than the movie ticket.

They need to make Titanic 3D Kids Cut Version. Basically starting from when the real action begins of the Titanic sinking and people falling like pins in 3D and drowning. Because that's all kids are there for from the sound of this story.

Ain't no 10yr kid is going to sit through 3 fucking hours watching DiCaprio talking shit and all this mushy crap nonsense.

Agreed on both counts. I've encountered lots of people at the movies who needed to get punched in the face. I'd love to see ushers at least occasionally check in on theaters to make sure there's no disturbances occurring. It's tough to go to the lobby and seek out management to report incidents to without it becoming blatantly obvious that you were the one who did so.

The proper thing to do was to talk to management first. They can then send an usher in to punch the kid in the face. All proper.

RichC2
05-24-12, 07:58 AM
Telling Management would just put it on file, it'd be like due diligence leading up to punching the kid in the face, but they need buttons like on airplanes -- why should someone miss part of the movie because there's a little shit sitting behind him? Management never does anything unless you're at the Alamo Drafthouse in Texas. Elsewhere it's always "Their word versus yours, and they're saying you instigated" bullshit.

 at a Regal that's probably true ... ;)

I haven't see it, but apparently the Post reviews of 'Project X' there's a scene where an adult gets tasered and then in revenge socks the kid

"As for that second joke, it comes halfway into the movie when an adult neighbor (Rob Evors) attempts to shut down the party and ends up getting Tasered by a 12-year-old (Brady Hender) who has been hired as a bouncer. That's not the funny part - or, for anyone older than 21, the only truly satisfying moment in the film.

That comes when the man gets up and clocks the snot-nosed brat in the face."

I really can't understand how you think you could take someones side when he was so clearly in the wrong. This guy should go to jail for LIFE! Screw him, they should let a group of guys beat him down and see if he thinks it's ok to mess with a little 10 year old kid.

Which is bullshit.

I've disliked the film since I saw it opening weekend, long before it was "cool" to hate it, but I can still appreciate the craftsmanship of the production. It's the script that sucks balls.

Anyway, is that an actual quote or something that was on Entourage? Sounds like the latter.

It makes me wonder how his date reacted. How many women would stick with a guy that punches 10 year olds over disruptive theater behavior?
