Books where villain is more powerful/smarter/in control then he first appears?
I have always enjoyed stories where that bad guy is more than anyone, including the reader, knows. Usually this happens with the good guys, but I have always found the opposite more enjoyable. A good example of this is Flagg from Steven Kings The Eyes of the Dragon. Thinking of Dragon's also reminds me of the sorcerer from Piers Anthony's book Dragon's Gold. .....generalization of a character spoilers...
So, any books stand out in your mind of having characters like this?
