I saw this movie on TV in the mid-1970s. I thought that it was The Canterville Ghost, but the payoff is different.
A Scotsman is condemned to haunt his castle because of an act of cowardice before a rival clan. But unlike the classic movie, he can only be released if he can get a member of the rival clan to apologize (or something like that).
An American family buys the castle, intending to use the ghost as a tourist attraction. This makes the ghost angry and hurt. He stops doing his midnight appearances. But when one of the guests, a pompous middle-aged man, boasts that he is the last member of the rival clan, the ghost pulls out all the stops and scares the crap out of the guy.
