Here's a few of my favorites. You say 'song' but I'm hoping that includes 'opening theme' (ie, without words) as well.

Should probably be in TVtalk, and picking an existing song is kind of a cheat, IMO. It's easy to point to a Beatles(Wonder Years, Our House), the Who(CSIs) Beach Boys(Men of a Certain Age) or Cake(Chuck) tune as a fave. Much tougher picking a favorite from something specifically composed for a show. It's also hard to separate the song from the title credits.

Yes, I'm way over thinking this.

I'm a sucker for killer opening titles (Quantum Leap, ER, NYPD: Blue, X-files, Fringe, Smallville, Friday Night Lights, Stargate) so it bugs the hell out of me the minimalistic shit shows do now to squeeze in an extra commercial.

So, three way tie for first:

I'd go with Cheers if we are talking with lyrics.

For kids shows, I have an affinity for this:

For theme tunes, I like these:

I love that era of TV theme songs/intros.

It is funny/interesting that almost none of these that have been mentioned are any younger than 20 years old or so, and some much older.
Is recent TV that much more cookiecutter, so that the whole package just doesn't stick in our mind?
Is it the massive competition for our viewing/listening attention just drowning any quality themes out?
Are themes/openings a dying breed, in order to allow more time for commercials or product placement?
Do the composers of today just suck?
Am I overthinking this?
(And of course that while we've mentioned a dozen or so, I am aware that there are tons from 20-50 years ago that are also pretty lame.)

Fringe is a current favorite.

I stopped watching the NBA after NBC lost the rights and the theme music.

The 1985 Twilight Zone was creepy and especially near the end when they show a image of Rod Serling.

No one has mentioned Magnum PI yet? Strong theme song. But the crown probably belongs to the "other" Hawaii show. Hawaii 5-0 has a theme that just insists that it is bad ass.

Hawaii 5-0 and Airwolf belong together as shows that had such good opening music and such good opening montages that the shows demanded to be watched and then consistantly let you down because every episode was just pure shit.

Of the ones listed so far, I love:

The Doctor Who run is totally fascinating. Man, did the credits get cheesy between Tom Baker and Chris Eccleston. Looks like lettering for an autobody repair place.

The Rockford FIles - The best from the 70's IMHO. It SAYS '70's to me.

Veronica Mars - Love it. Amazingly edited. It doesn't hurt that Kristen Bell is one of the most beautiful creatures walking the earth.

And finally, my criminally neglected contribution...

Damn, I totally forgot The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Easily one of my favorites at the moment. I'd also throw in the theme from the All in the Family spinoff Archie Bunker's Place. I blind-bought a DVD based on this kick-ass theme alone:

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dWk-VpK4hJo?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dWk-VpK4hJo?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Not really that surprising, considering how songs have been deemphasized in favor of short themes. Seinfeld was the first short theme I remember. It was a shock the year ER got rid of the opening theme, then awesome when they brought it back for the final episode (can't embed):

Lots of good ones already posted.

The definitive seventies TV theme song, for some reason it's impossible to be in a bad mood when you hear it:
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/m_wFEB4Oxlo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

My personal favorite use of a hit song in a credit sequence:
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wdUCGiF-yaA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

A snappy little tune:

Clarissa Explains It All & Nurse Jackie

The first time I watched Nurse Jackie & heard the theme song I sung "Way cool!" "Alright! Alright!" & "Just do it!" in the appropriate places!

One I remember fondly from my childhood. The show itself was a tad hokey, but the theme song is lovely:

The Royle Family had a great Oasis b-side (Half A World Away) as the theme.

I'm a big fan of Spenser for Hire, Just the Ten of Us, Unsolved Mysteries and Misfits of Science themes.
