While I love the show and I have been very thankful for season 4, the ratings just don't justify the renewal - thank goodness Warner Brother's bottom line does. :)

more likely that WB gave FOX the show for next to nothing. Fox could have done much better honestly then renewing a show with 3 million viewers and 1.0 demos. Still no syndication deal yet for a show with 80+ episodes already. Can 2 million viewers and CW demos be far behind?

This. If only we could turn back the clocks on that decision. Maybe Firefly has had multiple seasons in the other Fringe universe.

Really happy about the renewal. 13 episodes should let the writers really move the story along to a great conclusion, without any of the MOTW episodes.

 Great news. Very happy. I've watched every week since day 1.

JH Wyman was pretty optimistic in his tweets this week about the renewal.

To show WB my appreciation, I'm going to purchase the season 4 BD release week and pay the $35-40. :D

 Kevin Reilly is the man! Despite bad ratings, he supports shows that he thinks are good and that he knows has a fanbase. When he was at NBC, he renewed Friday Night Lights for a 2nd season when it probably didn't deserve one either.

Great news. This is my new favorite show. It keeps amazing me every week and am glad it didn't get cancelled back in season 2 or 3.

It seems that most shows lose creativity after 100 episodes so it looks like we'll have a flawless series.

It's funny overnight viewership, Fringe averages around a 1.2 in the 18-49 demos, which is terrible. According to this article, with DVR playback, it averages around a 2.0, which is decent for FOX.

I guess practically everyone who watches the show, DVRs it and watches it later.

I don't know if you know, but ratings for DVR viewership are only counted if you watch the commercials. (I'm not kidding and I know it defeats the purpose of a DVR) You have to watch your DVR recording within 7 days with commercials for it to be tabulated into those numbers. Viewers who fast forward through commecials don't count in the Live +7 ratings. Fringe's April 6th episode ratings grew 80% with DVR numbers.

Your being a little feisty. I'm not sure if your pissed that it got renewed or just genuinely surprised.

Yes, with this 13 episode order, Fringe will have exactly 100 episodes.

Season 1= 20

Season 2= 23

Season 3= 22

Season 4= 22

Season 5= 13 = 100

With the advent of DVDs and BDs, honestly who is going to watch Fringe in repeats if it gets a syndication deal? Serialized shows already don't repeat well and IMO it's alot easier for a channel surfer to watch a The Office or 30 Rock repeat than a random episode of Fringe or even Chuck.

I realize different people are in charge now but maybe this will cause some to think twice before repeating to tired old mantra that Fox never gives shows a chance. Fox tries to do what they all try to do -- make money. If shows don't bring in viewers, it is rarely Fox's fault. But they do seem to remember fans where possible. The 2 shows I most wanted to get a reprieve did get a reprieve -- Dollhouse and now Fringe.

Now the ball's in the court of the creative team at Fringe. Make us proud.

As Mr. Wonka would say: "Strike that, reverse it."

Alcatraz needs the fall season more then Fringe does. Gives the writers more time to get the scripts perfect before they start filming.

And sides, with it being a final season, it doesn't matter when it appears, we know its going to happen, and the fans will watch it numbers be damned.

So let's give Alcatraz the better shot in the arm.

I have the first three seasons on dvd and have only watched the first one. I really liked it but decided to wait until it ends to bother with rest of them. I figured it being on Fox it would get canceled without a resolution and it being produced by JJ Abrams if it got a resolution it would just suck. I will wait and see if the internet explodes from the last episode being horrible or not before I commit to the series.

I only sporadically catch the show, I never cared for the Monster of the Week stuff but I did enjoy the overall story line they had going. The season 1 finale (namely the last 5 minutes) really sold me though, the entire thing reminded me of Half-Life, and that alone made me a fan.

Proof? The DVD/BD sales have been poor since Season 2, and the international market isn't very big for this show.

IMO, this was a pretty stupid deal for WB. Fox likely paid next to nothing for this, so it'll be spackle next Season, but WB is going to take a bath. Syndication is everyone will say...but what station will air this?

No, really. Lost is probably one of the most successful shows of the past decade and where can I currently watch it? What about Chuck (also a WB giveaway)? These type of shows just don't work in syndication. The only network that might air this is G4, but it's not likely to last much longer. Maybe SyFy? They tried that with Terminator: sarah Connor and dropped that show before the series had aired (which was something like 32 episode).

It's great fans get a final 13 episodes, but this just shows Fox is starting to panic. Glee has nose-dived. New Girl isn't what it was a few months ago. Bones is likely coming into it's last Season and...that's it.

I really can't help but think Jericho started all this. I was a small part of the 'NUTS' campaign, and it's seemed like ever since then, shows with cult followings like this are much more likely to get second and third chances.

and CBS has since stopped that since Jericho bombed when it came back for seven episodes. Sadly, Moonlight was casualty of this since they might have renewed it for a Second Season has the Jericho experiment not failed that same year (I still refuse to watch CBS).

Since then networks continue to try this and are met no success. Dollhouse. Chuck. Fringe. Breaking In. Human Target. Can't really blame them for canceling the shows. We might like them, but fans just don't suddenly pop up.

Fox doesn't give shows a chance. WB likely gave them the show for free and/or lower cost than a reality show.

Why would Fox turn down 13 original episodes of something that can be used as spackle once one of their Fall shows bomb and they need something ready in a heart beat? It's just good business sense. They don't give a shit about fans. They care about money. Don't fool yourself by reading network comments.

This. Same with DVD. It just isn't gonna happen. Watching 100 episodes of a serial show that wasn't very popular is a difficult sell. Especially something as complex and confusing as Fringe.

I think Fringe, like Friday Night Lights has survived, not by viewership, but by posterity. The good will created by renewing Fringe is more important than the bad will received by cancellation without resolution. They will strive to break even for the final season and write it off.

From a business prospective WB has something to gain from having the show "complete", but they're banking on an expanded cult status down the line.

Fox is actually a pretty lenient network when it comes to ratings, as long as a show stays above around a 2.0 (18 - 49) it has a pretty good chance of staying put. ie- New Girl has lost half its audience (10m premiere w/ a 4.7 in 18 - 49, 5.20m last week) but retains one of the highest 18 - 49 ratings on the network (2.6) and just behind their other primary main hit (Glee, 2.7), which has also slid heavily since Season 1. They were the most lenient right behind CW until NBC fell apart. ABC and especially CBS are slaughterhouses.

Not sure why Raising Hope got a pass other than they know they'd have an empty schedule without it. Their only concrete money makers seems to be their Sunday night block which is produced in-house, pulls low viewers but solid demo and has high syndication, and American Idol (which unlike their cartoons are one and done).

The 2nd part of your comment is blatantly wrong. The 5th season is premiering in the Fall. It's not being used as a midseason replacement as your implying.

Most likely it will air on Friday yet again from September to January and then a cheaper show will finish the season. IMO, FOX is probably done investing in scripted for Friday nights. Noone is watching live and the best they can do is finish in 4th place.

And your sounding quite bitter, are you still pissed that Reunion got cancelled? ;)

Only if it's sold to them dirt cheap and shown at 11pm. Syfy is anything but Sci-Fi. I seriously doubt any station would touch this show. All you would have to do is miss a few episodes and then you have to wait till a marathon to catch up. The blu-ray/dvd market is big, but the cost will be high. The download market has the potential, but the audience is much smaller. I really don't think there is an after air market for Fringe. It's gonna cost the consumer a lot more than free. I would expect $30 a season. $120 for the 5 seasons. Maybe $100 on special.

Ever since the show returned from holiday break I've noticed heavy regular sponsorship by Ford. How many times have we seen the mustang commercial with the car changing colors depending on who's looking at. One episode had blatant product placement with the Fringe team and FBI all driving the new Ford electric car. Maybe this has worked out well for Ford.
Possibly Ford has already agreed to sponsor 13 more episodes at a locked in rate. The cost of production may be subsidized by Ford with everybody driving Ford vehicles in the show.

Don't mess up the ending, don't mess up the ending, don't mess up the ending. No, seriously, don't mess up the ending. It's usually these sci-fi type series that are given a definite end date that tend to go bonkers during the final episodes in an ill-advised attempt to answer every little question that's popped up over the previous X number of years.

No, not really. A lot of shows get "a second chance" for various reasons. In Fox's case, they dreamed of a scripted Friday night with Dollhouse and had hopes the WB Terminator flick would spark interest in Sarah Connor. Neither worked out.

Re-read. WB gave them the back 9 for free/netx to nothing. It would have been shitcanned after the initial 13 episodes. Can't remember when this was moved to Friday either....IIRC it was originally on Mondays.

aren't you just a golden ray of fucking sunshine in this thread.

It is what it is. This show has limited syndication. Aside from international sales the show has next to nothing. DVD/BD sales are also pretty low for this.

Chuck has better syndication possibilities with the format of the show. Fringe makes no sense if you miss two episodes (apart from Season One).

It's blatant and annoying but it's what keeps the shows on the air so I suck it up and have learned to live with it.

Shows were kept on the air long before these stupid "ads" started. In Ones case, it's heavily syndicated so each episode is likely already "paid for".

Dude, your show with one of the lowest ratings on network TV just got renewed. Cheer up! Just think of the show Fox will now likely cancel to make way for 13 more episodes that likely won't break a 1.0. Cya Alcatraz! Cya Finder!

Don't worry, they'll save face by renewing the ever dropping Touch for 13 episodes just to say they didn't cancel any of there one hour dramas this year. Just to cancel it next Season. I know Fox too well. Maybe they can add a female boss to the cast! I heard Meagan Mullay is available....after Fox tried to save face by renewing low performing Breaking In.

I agree. Advertisers and networks know that people skip the commercials so they need to do something different. Same with the ads that incorporate characters in order to trick us into watching them.

I think it would be interesting if they spread out their animation, and instead ran this final 13 Sundays at 9. I feel like hat could help it pick up more viewers.

I like the thinking, and I think it could be a good Sunday show, but what chance do new viewers have to figure out what's going on?

Why would Fox mess with the success that is the Sunday cartoon block? They've tried live shows there before - 'Til Death, Sons of Tuscons etc and it has never worked. Aside from the X-Files nearly a decade ago, Fox has had zero live action hits on Sunday. And for it's final season? They don't care. The ratings don't matter.

Not in the same DVR-heavy world with 100s of channels to choose from. They have to change the model to keep these shows on the air. And besides, at lot of times they are doing things that people actually do do (showing off a new feature in your car, or just plain using that feature yourself). It just feels weird for a TV show because we aren't used to it.

I guess I will wait to see reaction to the series finale and then decide if it's worth picking up the eventual series collection on Blu-ray.

I'm not really an expert on this, but I've read that the audience numbers the advertisers look at are the number of people who watch the commercials, not the shows. So you could FF through the programming and watch just the commercials, and that would count toward the rating. But the other way, watch the show and FF through commercials would not.

Now, if you're a Fringe fan and a Nielson family, one might think you could help the cause by first watching the show the way you normally do (FF through commercials), then invest some time and play through just the commercials several times to bump the ratings. Maybe you could read a book or something while this was going on. I'm kidding, of course. But still...

I am super happy about this news! I was just wondering if a show is picked up like this for 13 episodes are there ever cases where they decide to give more...or once that decision is made I should not question the miracle and just except it?

Very rare. Especially since all 13 episodes will likely be shot by the time it airs so there is no 'going back' Wouldn't be surprised if they started up in the next few weeks with S5.

There is no way that all 13 episodes will be shot and completed by the time this premieres in September. One Tree Hill had a 13 episode order for their final season and they didn't wrap until mid-late November (even though they had a Spring premiere). They started shooting in June or July last year. Alot more work goes into Fringe with the special effects/post production. I follow Joel Wyman's Twitter page and he's shooting a movie for the next month and a 1/2. They won't start work on the show until later in the summer.

I also started watching, and enjoying, Heroes on day one. It just got too disjointed for me. I didn't care if they got a final season to finish any story lines or not.

...assuming it launches in The Fall. Fox can hold these episodes for as long as they want. Just because they said it will air in "fall" in May, does Not mean they will hold that promise come Sept/Oct. This show is far more expensive to make so a short break between Seasons 4 and 5 might work. Plus Im sure the cast would love to be considered for the next pilot Season as soon as possible.

But more then 13 isn't going to happen. This shows ratings are beyond pathetic and Fox likey only did a fifth season since it was practically free for them.

I'm excited and sad at the same time. Fringe has been my favorite show on TV since it started. It's really hard to believe we ended up with 5 seasons. I didn't think it'd get renewed for a 3rd, or a 4th, and certainly not a 5th.

Can't wait to see how it ends!

I'm glad the show got 5 seasons and 100 episodes, but I'm also a little upset that a very well made serialized science fiction show like this couldn't find a steady audience. I guess moving the show to Thursdays at 9pm was pretty much the nail in the coffin.
