They're watching Mechanized Death! I missed the day we were going to watch that in Driver's Ed. Still haven't seen it but I recognized that beginning.

Even though I wouldn't call Pete a good person I actually felt sorry for the guy. And they keep teasing us Don's monogamy, how long does it take for him to cheat?

Pete had been hitting the snooze button on his wake-up call for too long, and Lane delivered it perfectly.
He was an acceptable party host, but that's about it for his strengths this episode. In fact I'll give Trudy the credit for that. He insulted Roger, Don and Lane, couldn't fix a sink, blabbed about Ken's writing (probably stemming back from his jealousy from season 1), failed with the driver's ed chick (although that's probably a good thing), collectively failed to nab the Jaguar account but accepted little blame for it. Maybe he's right about having nothing, at least in how he feels. But hey, Trudy and the baby are still waiting at that home that's 30 miles away.
He deserved to get his ass beaten for his comment towards Lane, but like Joan and Ken said, everybody wanted it to happen for a variety of reasons.
On top of that he got pissed at Don for not stepping in or putting a stop to it. Wow.

Great episode, I too was questioning if this was the best episode yet, but then I remember that every episode delivers and The Suitcase is still the tops. I loved the scene with Pete and the prostitute, Try Again. John Slattery did a great job directing, this episode had so much going on that it felt like a movie.

"I have nothing"
Bringing up that he has a rifle.
The talk about the randomness of violence, continuing from the last episode.
Pete's focus on his ineptitude and physical strength.
I think Pete's gonna shoot somebody!

I thought this was one of the best of the series too.
initially I thought Lane was going to kick the shit out of Pete...then i thought Pete might win when he got the first punch, insulting Lane further...the looks on the other's faces were perfect, "I know cooler heads should prevail but..."
Between that and Pete shooting down the hooker's role play attempts, I was laughing my ass off. I actually started clapping like a chimp when the Lane rolled up his sleeves.
On a side note, that hooker was hot.

Re: Mad Men -- "Signal 30" -- 4/15/12
I was about to say were Roger 20-30 years younger he might have done it himself. Then I decided to look up on IMDB to see how old the actor is. I wanted to get into the mid-30's to mid-40's timeframe (still young enough to basically survive a fight). Come to find out the actor was born in 1962 (he'll be 50 in August) and isn't anywhere near as old as I'd have thought from the show. The actor who plays Bert Cooper, on the other hand, was born in 1931 (yes, he's 80).
Go Lane. Could have taken out his aggression on a more deserving target. And every single person around the table had the look of, "Don't walk around being a haughty jerk then expecting others to come bail you out." Don's been a jerk on many occasions too, but at least in that situation he would have dealt with his own repercussions without crying about it. And somewhere deep in Don, as much as he's often insensitive towards others, there's a guy who roots for the underdog who is willing to work hard. Pete on the other hand would see someone like that and immediately look down his nose.

Petes problem is that a house in Cos Cob, and a junior partnership is NOTHING for a Dyckman, no matter how hard they have fallen.

I know is a cliche this season, but Roger was great!
And Pete is a complex character, we saw his bad side in this episode, but he is the new blood, the new paradigm, ahead of the times. Roger can paint his face black and have fun and Pete will be terrified of that.

This episode was absolutely fantastic. When Lane rolled up his sleeves I stood up from my bed and didn't sit down again until the commercial break. That scene was intense and funny.
Other things I loved in this episode:
The scene between Don and Pete in the back of the cab.
The scene at the dinner party where Trudy talks about "Charles Whitmore" and Don (Dick Whitman himself) corrects her, "Whitman."
The dripping water-faucet sound effect returning at the very end of the episode as Pete tries to sleep.
