Titanic miniseries on ABC 4/14 - 4/15
Did anyone watch this last night? If so, will you watch the rest of it tonight?
Just wondering if its worth investing 5 hours of my life to.

I'm watching Titanic which concludes tonight. This has really been fantastic. I love the structure of each episode and some of the performances are outstanding. I'm sure the sinking will not be as dramatic as Cameron's but so far I'm liking this better. It's like a jigsaw puzzle. Each episode starts before the voyage and about 30 min. in hits the iceberg. We get more and more backstory that fills in the holes as we go along. Very cool. I like that they focused equally on the staff as on the passengers.

Started, but the cinematography is so drab, dull, and lifeless that I found it too dreary to watch. I knew it wasn't going to have much of a budget, but I thought it would at least be in color. Which I guess it was technically....gray & brown.
ABC didn't seem to have high hopes anyway, to toss the first three hours off on a Saturday night.

It seemed the several of the sets weren't using any designs based on the actual Titanic. A few rooms looked like they were in a hotel instead of on a ship. In the first episode there was a dance in a room that, because I had missed some of it, I didn't even realize they were on the ship. I figured they were still on land before the boarding. Then they cut to another scene that finally did look like the ship.

As to the look, all Period Dramas from this era have the same washed-out look. Sort of like a faded picture. It's intentional. The same way that films set in the 60's and 70's usually have a more colorful and vibrant look.
This looked just as good if not better than Cameron's film.

Damn I missed the boat, so to speak.
I can't believe I never heard about this until today. Any way to catch up on the 1st three episodes online?

I'm DVRing this, as I love anything and everything Titanic (or anything and everything cruise-related)

I just hope this production restores the good name of First Officer William Murdoch, which James Cameron - to his great shame - so callously besmirched.

Unless this is 2.5 hours of Jack and Rose running around chasing each other, I wouldn't call it a remake. The ship and its fate are just the backdrop setting.

Watching it right now. Interesting take on it. But, the commercial breaks are pretty brutal. 5-6 minutes of content, boom commercial.
BTW, it said in the beginning this is from the Producers of Downton Abbey.

I've watched about 2 hours of it so far.
The commercial breaks IMO kill the flow of the movie.
This is basically how the movie is formatted so far.
Hour 1= from the perspective of the 1st Class Passengers. The ship hits the ice berg.
Hour 2= rewind back in time to the ship getting ready to sail. From the perspective of the crew and then later from the 3rd class passengers.

Finished all 3 hours today. Will watch part 4 after it records either later tonight or tomorrow.
Overall, it's not bad. Considering this is a 4 hour movie/miniseries, it might be tough for people in this forum to get motivated to watch it. And I know there is already plenty to watch on Sundays.
But, the set designs are good and they cast alot of good British actors. The most known is probably Linus Roache from Law and Order.
For me, what kills it is the commercial breaks as I've noted. There is literally a commercial break every 5-6 minutes. It disrupts the flow of the storytelling. Also, they use some non-linear storytelling, which may confuse people.

The constant commercial breaks makes the show go really fast via DVR.
Definitely got caught up in the lives of the characters and wished different ones survived and perished.
Basically anyone screaming "Long Live the Class System" needed to die on that ship.

My wife and I watched the first hour and we both decided to delete the rest. Too much going on with too many people in the span of 1 hour to even try and get emotionally involved.

On another note, I guess this answers the question from the other thread as to what happened to the mini-series. Glad we're still getting them in some capacity, although I missed the airings of this.

It worked out in the end...they basically told the same story four times from different POVs. Still, this proved to be great evidence why no one should try to do the TITANIC story for a long time...Cameron hit it out of the park...anything else is going to pale in comparison.
