Obvious questions:

Are you using an HDMI cable and configured the box to your HD TV?

Your HDTV should be set up to display 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i & 1080p. Look at one of your HD channels and make sure it is either 720p or 1080i then look at one of your SD channels and make sure it is either 480i or 480p.

Did a Comcast person install the box? Usually they will check to ensure the box is working correctly.

Other than checking your HDTV the cable box should also display what the channel is broadcasting in regards to SD vs HD. Never had Comcast but Cox Cable HD boxes did that.

Do you have an HD TV?

I don't think it's possible to hook up an HD box to SD TV.

I would think you could. Even my new DirecTV five tuner HR34 has a composite video output you could connect to a 20 year old SDTV.

Look in the settings of the box and make sure it's set to 720p or 1080i or whatever. My DirecTV installer forgot and it was on 480p. Some receivers like mine will actually have a light on the front panel showing which mode it's in.

Make sure it is connected with either an HDMI or component cables or it won't be HD.

It should look much, much better than SD. I don't watch any SD at all. After watching HD, SD looks like someone opened a can of grease and rubbed it on the screen.

Yes, it is. You can also hook Blu-ray players up to SD sets.

Assuming the OP does have an HDTV the first thing to check is that he output of the box s set to the correct resolution. I used to have a Comcast HD-DVR that would occasionally revert to 480i for no particular reason.

That's the first thing to comes to mind as well. I'm going to go out on a ledge and assume the OP just hooked up a new HDTV to a cable box (that's probably capable of HD) that has already been in the house for a while. If that's the case, the box is probably only set at standard resolution. I would suggest the OP try to find settings for his box setup so he can select the acceptable resolutions for his set.

There is another exception however - If the content being viewed on an HD channel isn't actually being shown in HD at the time, you'll often find the standard def channel to look better.
