I think these developers are all going to the same well -- I don't know how long before it dries right up. If any of these games end up sucking, that'll be the end of Kickstarting games, I predict.

Personally, I have nostalgia for none of these games currently seeking funding. I kicked in to Double Fine at the last minute because I've liked their games this generation as well as Psychonauts. I just don't know if any of these other ones are going to be worth $15 to me sight-unseen.

Any opinions or explanations from current backers would be appreciated before the funding windows close.

I've backed wasteland 2, shadowrun returns and FTL

I backed wasteland 2 because it was the spiritual predecessor to 2 of my favorite isometric cprg. Wasteland 2 is going to be in the same vein. This is going to be the fallout 3 that we all wanted (no offense to the fps fallouts, I like those as well). Also chris avellone is now attached to the project, getting the black isle gang back together from when deep game play was on the pc.

Shadowrun was backed because it is also going to be another cprg action game. I have fond memories of the sr games on super Nintendo and genesis, not to mention the pnp game setting.

Both the Weismann and fargo projects are coming from guys that have put out some of greatest settings/games. Weissman had mech warrior and shadowrun, Fargo has bards tale and fallout, throw in avellone who was the genius behind ice wind dale, planesscape torment, and you just have all sorts of awesome if you like turn based. Also Weismann says shadowrun will feel like X-Com which is another mega popular title.

FTL? The gameplay sold me, and some of the other details. Unless a kickstarter is by someone that I somewhat trust, the it is up to the kickstarter to prove it to me.

On current kickstarter projects, I am this close to backing banner saga, not sold just based on who is doing it, but the cel animation style reminds me of dragon lair and it's a rpg

A couple of others that look interesting:

Dead linger

Initial investments (to get the actual game). Are Both higher 25$, so im going to have really be convinced to take the gamble. Safer bet at 15$ with Fargo than it is 25$ for the dead linger guys.

It's entirely possible to lose you money

I mentioned it in the Double Fine kickstarter page a couple weeks ago, but a Tex Murphy kickstarter project is going to launch on May 15th. Looking forward to that.

I'm going back and forth on whether to back the Leisure Suit Larry remake. I've already purchased the first remake of that game, and even though it's been 20 years, I don't know if I want to buy it again. I guess it's just like double dipping DVDs/BDs and I've done that on many occasions. They mention if they reach their goal they plan to add more stuff to the game. Might be worth it just for that.

Great thread Jay. Although my wife probably hates you now.

My problem is that I'm an absolute sucker for exclusive fun bonuses like names in credits and limited edition soundtrack CDs AND for nostalgia/holding onto my past. It's almost as if Kickstarter itself was designed to take my money. Between video games, music, and board games I'm finding dozens of projects tempting me.

I want somebody to revive the old Police Quest games.
That's a possibility.

From the FAQ for the LSL remake:
I love the Sierra classics!! Can you bring back King's Quest, Space Quest, or Police Quest?

Our good friends over at Tell Tale have licensed King's Quest from Activision. If we do our job right then maybe, just MAYBE we'll be able to partner with them and ruinite the Space Quest team, King's Quest team (go Roberta!!!!) and Police Quest team for re-makes or new versions of those (Space Quest 7 anybody?)

Also, from an article I previously linked to about LSL:
Happy As Larry: Al Lowe On Remaking His Classic Game (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/10/happy-as-larry-al-lowe-on-remaking-his-classic-game/)
[Paul Trowe]: I’ve been trying to remake the Sierra classics since they’ve been lost in the hands of various companies like Vivendi and Havas and Universal, and now Activision. So I approached Activision to do remakes of all the games, and I wanted to acquire rights to Leisure Suit Larry, King’s Quest, Police Quest and Space Quest, games I grew up beta testing.

So the LSL remake looks like a possible launching pad for remakes/sequels for all those Sierra series.

Nice article I liked this part:

“Overall, I want to ‘invest’ in a game that I want to play or made by a guy that I adore,” Dent said. “I spoke to/begged David Jaffe recently about using Kickstarter to make a game. I have no idea where he is on that or if he is going to go down that route. My point is that I love Jaffe’s games, so if I were to see that he was setting that up in Kickstarter, I would instantly support it.” This might be the best, or at least safest, use of Kickstarter: The service allows proven talent to create games with a large audience but limited appeal to traditional investors.

LSL did it, and Shadowrun passed 1.5. LSL now looks to try its hand at $750k (which might be too adventurous) and Shadowrun wants a go at 1.75 million. I think Shadowrun has more of a chance to get to 1.75 million than LSL has to get to 750k but I could be wrong. But then again, there is always that push at the end, so we'll see.

Some general Kickstarter news:

A new, game-specific alternative to Kickstarter is due to launch at this year's E3, called Gambitious:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-04-20-game-specific-kickstarter-alternative-to-launch-at-e3

It's launching in Europe first, and the major difference is that it allows profit sharing, making the funders actual investors.

Doesn't appear too many people are upset, they have more than met their KS funding
Their kickstarter drive ended on October 6, 2011, and has been fully funded. Their update about buying the iPads (along with other expenses they've incurred) was posted on April 15, 2012. Even if people wanted to pull their money from the project, it's about 6 months too late.

Ironically, the controversy came about because the developers were trying to be open about how they were spending the Kickstarter money. Considering they're making an iOS game, and their funding came through in October, it makes sense that they'd buy several of the "New iPad" aka iPad 3 to test their game on.

Edit: The story could be a lesson in backer expectations though. Ultimately, once the kickstarter has ended, the developer has your money and the control of the project is out of your hands. They can opt to still listen to the community, but if you really want to make sure your money isn't used in a manner you don't agree with, your only option really is to not donate in the first place.

Tycho at Penny Arcade has a newspost about Kickstarter, apparently in response to many people asking him to promote their project:
http://penny-arcade.com/2012/04/25
I don’t want to become the Kickfather people come to in order to make their nut; requests to do so have grown to the point that some sites have had to create specific policies related to their promotion. There’s Wisdom in that, and maybe I’ll need something like that at some point. Some of these Kicks have bigger problems, too. I’ve already had to talk one potential group down already, just last night. I don’t want to be in the dream crushing business either, but some dreams are self-crushing, and it’s not always easy to see that from inside.

What is consistently startling to me is the breadth of uses people put the service to. Sometimes the service acts as a microinvestment platform, and sometimes it’s a fairly traditional preorder system. It’s bizarre. You are aware that I’m obsessed with David Sirlin, and the Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sirlin/puzzle-strike-3rd-edition-shadows-expansion)he put up a few days ago is already funded at two-hundred percent. The pledge per user, an interesting statistic I like to track for some reason, is very high. What’s different about his pitch is that unlike many speculative projects, the game he’s offering is already complete and rigorously tested: he’s essentially holding the game hostage. Here, Kickstarter is being leveraged to ablate production risk.

Then you have projects like Republique (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/486250632/republique-by-camouflaj-logan), which are simply too beautiful to live; I mean, that’s not getting kicked, right? Unbelievably professional pitch, strong concept, but this is the opposite of a Kickstarter, and might actually be a Kickstopper. I saw people playing a card game called Legend of the Cipher (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/game-on-loc/legend-of-the-cipher-the-game-of-hip-hop?ref=search) in the Tabletop room at PAX. There’s an alternate system for resolution as well, but in the base game people literally freestyle battle raps to determine success. That was put up two weeks ago, but it hasn’t seen much movement.

Kickstarter is cool, I’m “down,” but people somehow managed to create things before Kickstarter. I can’t stress that enough. Especially in light of some of these improbable victories and the Overthrow of the Industry Hierarchs, the possibility of disillusionment for creators is at an all time high. Sometimes you have to throw your life away, and pay in blood. I recommend that you do this while you’re young, and can still subsist on a slurry of Ramen packets and urine.

Interestingly, this is the second Kickstarter attempt for Legend of the Cipher; their first attempt last fall failed:

On current kickstarter projects, I am this close to backing banner saga, not sold just based on who is doing it, but the cel animation style reminds me of dragon lair and it's a rpg

A couple of others that look interesting:

Dead linger

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sandswept/the-dead-linger?ref=category

Looks interesting a fps zombie apocalypse sandbox game

Ravaged

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2dawngames/ravaged?ref=category

Madmax vehicle warfare, also looks interesting gameplay looks great

I ended up not backing Dead Linger, since to back it to get a Digital copy of the game would have been 25$, and honestly it did not look that appealing, I would be more likely to back something at the 10-15$ price point for a digital copy, especially if it is from someone that I admire/done well in the past.

The Grim Dawn thing digital copy is at 18.00$ I'll be hopping on that eventually.

So what projects have everyone backed?

I looked at a couple of board games/comics/film kickstarters..close to backing those as well.

For me I've now backed:

FTL
Shadowrun Returns
Wasteland 2
Banner Saga

Thinking about:

Games:

Dead Linger
Grim Dawn
Ravaged

Video:

Dome
Fallout: Nukka Break Season 2

Ended up not Backing Dead Linger, Did Just now back Grim Dawn, Price point still to high IMHO for Ravaged.

Also have not backed Dome and Fallout: Nukka..but I have backed these other worthwhile projects:

Documentary Expedition to Congo (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/817864170/new-species-expedition-to-congo) A team of four go into the Congo to try and discover new species - backed at 5$ dollar tier, decent reward, also not enough $$$ to feel like I got screwed if project falls on its face. You get updates from the team and a bracelet made from some of the natives.

Antler Boy and Other Stories (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jakeparker/the-antler-boy-and-other-stories) 12-13 Short Stories in a graphic novel Book. Went in at 25$ to get a copy of the hardcover book, all the stories looked pretty interesting and the drawings look great. The guy doing it has a good track record (did animation for Rio, Ice Age III, Horton hears a who) as well as his own graphic novel (Missile Mouse). Apparently he will add another short story if they hit 60k. Well look at that..they just hit 60k (60,005), so that is another short story added to the book!

Postcards from Nowhere (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1557211754/postcards-from-nowhere) Interesting project, they will go visit each state, and send out postcards with pictures captured from each state. I went in at 2$ level which grants you a postcard from the state of your choice. I wanted to help out, and get a postcard. Pretty neat idea.

Projects I am really interested in, just debating the reward tiers:

Corter Leather Bottle Hook (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/830872749/corter-leather-bottle-hook) Looks like a really good bottle opener hook that connects to your belt loop. I actually need a bottle opener, But the 36$ price point is a *little* high.

Pebble E-watch for Iphone (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/597507018/pebble-e-paper-watch-for-iphone-and-android) This looks really amazing, and can do some many cool things, I guess that is why they have generated more than 8.0 million dollars. It costs 99$ but it actually looks like a great deal. Might jump on this but this might require wife buyoff lol.

Cubby (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1445611363/cubby-award-winning-coat-hook-storage-unit) I definitely need something like this, but if I am going to get one, I need to get at least 3 for our house, so this is definitely another wife buy in. Hang your coat, put your keys/workbadge/wallet in the cubby hole.

True, I think this is the first franchise revival on Kickstarter that hasn't had at least part of the original development team on board.

GOG has the original Battle Chess Trilogy (Battle Chess, Battle Chess II: Chinese Chess and Battle Chess 4000) available in one "Special Edition" package, although it apparently doesn't work on Windows 7 (yet):
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/battle_chess_special_edition

Chessmaster 10 added a chess set with animations, but apparently it's not quite up to the quality of animations in the Battle Chess series:
http://pc.ign.com/articles/542/542613p1.html

There's also "Battle Vs Chess," which Interplay has sued to keep from being sold in the US:

I'm just mostly happening across the KS info, either on news sites, or checking new KS projects (which is how I found Battle Chess).

Telltale Games is developing a King's Quest game, so it's unlikely a KS for that series will be started soon. Roberta Williams is not involved.

For Space Quest, the Two Guys From Andromeda are close to announcing a Kickstarter, but they don't have a license to use SQ, so they're creating an original space-themed adventure game.

A Kickstarter game project was exposed as a scam and cancelled:
http://www.shacknews.com/article/73596/kickstarter-project-exposed-as-scam-canceled
'Mythic' Kickstarter project exposed as scam, canceled
by Steve Watts, May 01, 2012 10:00am PDT

It had to happen eventually. This year has seen an explosion of independent projects funded by crowd-sourcing site Kickstarter, and it was only a matter of time before someone tried to take advantage of such goodwill for a scam. Such is the apparent case of "Mythic: The Story of Gods and Men," a project that raised eyebrows and has subsequently been canceled.

The project page seems a bit slipshod at a glance, and for good reason. Comments on the Something Awful and Rock Paper Shotgun forums noted various reasons for suspicion. The character art, backgrounds, reward pictures, and office photos had been lifted from various sites. Most strikingly, the reward tiers were lifted directly from the Kickstarter page for The Banner Saga. The page bragged that its staff was composed of former Activision Blizzard vets, and that animation would be done by "friends at Disney/Pixar." We're sure they've got a beach in Kansas to sell you too.

The developer, "Little Monster Productions," briefly insisted that the project was legit in the comments before giving up the ghost. It had managed to snag almost $5,000 in pledges before it was exposed. Kickstarter only charges backers once a project is completely funded and finished, though, so those who chipped in won't be ripped off.

Fortunately, this wasn't a particularly convincing scam, and the collective brain of the Internet caught it quickly. Although crowd-sourcing has seen tremendous success, a healthy dose of skepticism is always a good idea. Scammers have been using donations as a cover for a long time, and the next one might be more convincing.

Penny Arcade has a comic and newspost about this attempted scam:

That is why people need to be smart about who they back, and how comfortable they are with the level of risk. There has been several really good articles about this.

Brian Fargo, Jordan Weissman - Really Safe Bets (industry leaders, proven trackrecord)
Jake Parker - Pretty Safe bet (Not a industry leader, but have worked on high profile items, plus is published already commerically).

postcards, Trip through the Congo, - Not a safe bet, but hey intriguing idea + acceptable risk for the reward offered, means I'm most likely going to jump on this.

SR, WL2, DFA all did gang busters because they came from some of the greatest names in gaming. Unless your last name is Avelleone or Fargo or Weismann, you are not going to ask for 1,000,000 and get it.

Leisure Suit Larry got funded, but because the extra funding added a lot more content, the title's release date has been moved from Oct 12 to early next year.

For those who are getting a Pebble : I just read one detail about the watch not on the Kickstarter website that I thought was important -- The Pebble will only show SMS message data from Android phones (iOS doesn't make this data available). This was important to me since it was the main reason I got the watch (I get hospital pages through my phone), but fortunately I just got a new Android phone, so I'm still okay.

Pebble Watch update for anyone still sitting on the fence :

Posted about 6 hours ago

We're limiting Kickstarter rewards to 85,000 Pebbles

Just wanted to let everyone know that our current plan is to limit the total number of Kickstarter rewards to around 85,000 Pebbles. As soon as the total exceeds that, all rewards will change to being 'sold out'. Right now you have claimed 75,000 watches, that leaves only 10,000 more before Pebble is sold out!
We've thought a lot about this decision, and we feel it's time. You, our backers, were the first group of people to believe in Pebble, and we want to return our focus to creating the most awesome watch possible for you.

Pebble will be available eventually for $150 USD from www.getpebble.com, but the expected delivery date will be well after the ship date of all Kickstarter backers.

That's where I am. Somewhere between $15 and $100, like you I like the idea of a box copy (something so I can say, hey i backed this and here is my proof to myself). That's why I gave $125 to Shadowrun was the fact, you get a boxed copy, backer shirt, your name in the credits, etc. I just thought that was neat as hell. So I'm leaning towards $15 for sure Two Guys, but if I feel strongly enough...who knows.

But if I do give $100, I think I'm going to stay away from Kickstarter for a while :). (Unless my college best friend's new game company he works for does one...which I could easily see since they are trying to fund a new game, then all bets are off).

Starting today we are allowing latecomers (let's call them "Slacker Backers") to support the project through PayPal. They will only have access to the $15 tier--the game and the development updates--while all physical rewards remain completely exclusive to you punctual types.

We think this is a good way to help the project while keeping special rewards like the t-shirt, poster, and big box one-time-only deals.

Xenonauts, a spiritual successor to X-Com:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/69341191/xenonauts

There's a demo of the alpha version of the game available that you can play before backing.

The game has already been on Desura as part of the site's "alpha-funding" feature since last November. People who pre-ordered on Desura are eligible for the kickstarter bonuses, but also already have access to the latest builds of the game:

I know the XCom shooter is a little off-putting, but I thought the remake should be right what XCom fans are looking for. There are two different games and look to appeal to two different groups of people. Just my two cents.

The Xenonauts FAQ has some info on how the X-Com remake will differ from the original X-Com and Xenonauts.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/69341191/xenonauts
Aren’t we already getting a remake of X-Com? An official one?

Yes, we are. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last six months, it’s in production by Firaxis and is called XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Ultimately, though, the Firaxis remake is a different type of game to Xenonauts. They have changed quite a few of the fundamentals of the game, streamlining things and removing elements like Time Units and weapon ammo, limiting the player to a single base and shrinking down squad sizes. These changes aren't necessarily bad, but the end result is that their game is taking a rather different form to ours.

Xenonauts is taking the core mechanics of X-Com and updating and balancing them so they are deeper and more intuitive, but not changing the fundamentals.

So Xenonauts is a more faithful remake and the Firaxis game is a more progressive remake. It is a matter of personal preference which you will find more appealing - though you could always buy both!

I'm definitely starting to be much more selective over my KS projects. Like that steampunk one, normally I would be all over it, but when I back a project, I back it based on how likely the project is going is going to be good. I don't have much faith that a game from a CGI artist is going to do well, because yes, visuals might be great, but the everything else? I am going to look at what the other aspects of the KS look like

I'm conflicted on this one. On one hand, he's only asked for $10,000 (and he got almost 50k). But on the other hand, he's using a game engine. Not that there is anything wrong with it and he admits it openly. But yeah, one of the rewards is put your voice in the game, but he wants $200 for the opportunity. Shoot, I got a good voice...I'd do it for free to help him out, the same with writing a side quest or two. But paying for it seems kinda wrong. There is flack for sure against him, but the amount is a bit much.

Many of the Kickstarters are using a third-party game engine of some time. Double Fine is using the Moai plaftorm, and Wasteland 2 is being developed on Unity. RPG Maker is a lot more limited, but considering he's making an RPG on a low budget, it's probably a good fit.

Here's another Kickstarter using RPG Maker: Unemployment Quest
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/412101570/unemployment-quest-a-non-epic-rpg

RPG Maker has been used on games sold commercially, the most notable possibly being To the Moon:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPG_Maker#Commercial_usage

But yeah, one of the rewards is put your voice in the game, but he wants $200 for the opportunity. Shoot, I got a good voice...I'd do it for free to help him out, the same with writing a side quest or two. But paying for it seems kinda wrong. There is flack for sure against him, but the amount is a bit much.
A lot of the Kickstarter game projects have had some form of reward that "puts you in the game" so to speak, either as a character name or a random character portrait, etc.

If he had asked for people to voice act or create content without charging a fee, then he would've gotten flooded with offers. Then he'd have to sort through them all and figure out which offers were legitimate and serious, and would be carried through. Making it a reward for backing the project at a high enough amount means that he only has to deal with those serious about contributing.

You could also consider that he might've figured that any $250+ donation means that he can add to the game on top of what he was originally planning. So it's not necessarily doing the work on the base game for him (with the original planned number of side-quests), but adding an additional side-quest specifically fan designed.

A big problem is that these rewards directly affect the quality of the content in the game. A backer could create a poor character design, or at least cause inconsistent character designs. Or write a poorly written quest or character dialogue. These could be mitigated by the developer editing the content, but if a backer delivers awful voice acting, there's little to nothing that can be done. And the entire game, when released, is going to be judged based in part on this additional content.

Fixed. They may have made their project length too long. According to their kicktraqer, the project's been live for 11 days already, meaning that they originally launched with 44 days:
http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/allgames/all-games-radio-network/

Kickstarter itself did a study that showed that most successful projects were under 30 days.

Also, their reward system is confusing. Just looking at the rewards on their KS page gives the impression that you get only that single reward for you pledge level, not any of the previous rewards. They clarified it a bit in an update:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/allgames/all-games-radio-network/posts/226686
Many people have asked if the higher tiers include the lower tier rewards also. The answer is yes and no. The Non-Physical rewards, like access to the Super Show, the Forum Icon, and digital downloads, are included. The physical items, like posters, and tshirts, are not.
So there's no way to get both a T-Shirt and a poster. This is in contrast to most other kickstarters, where the rewards are cumulative.

Kickstarter really needs a funding graph. It would be really interesting to see when it plateaus and how adding tiers creates spikes. Seems pretty simple too since you have a definite start date, end date, and the dates/times of all the individual pledges and when they're modified.

Zombie Playground is an online, team based, action arena game with RPG elements. Gameplay will be deep, challenging, and rewarding. The game combines childhood nostalgia with horrific monsters, visceral combat, and a unique atmosphere straight out of a child’s nightmares. We do want to make it very clear: this is not a game for kids!

The initial release is planned for PC/Mac, but we’d certainly like to support Linux and hand-helds if there is enough demand and support.

Well, they tell you why they're using Kickstarter.

We have been doing our best to make and fund this game ourselves so that we can stay true to our vision, but working full time on other projects to pay the bills really cuts down on what we are able to achieve on a timely basis. We have been actively seeking out outside funding, but that is hard to secure without strings attached. Keeping true to our vision and raising money are difficult things to accomplish in tandem, but with Kickstarter, we hope that we can solve that problem and deliver the TRUE Zombie Playground experience.

I imagine a lot of people would see this and immediately want to make it more kid friendly rather then mature.

I think the problem is using kids as protagonists in mortal peril, and having kid zombies as the targets for killing. People are going to find it upsetting, even if the game is properly rated for Mature audiences.

As fumanstan noted, major publisher would either want to tone down the violence, making it kid friendly, or change the age of the characters, removing most of what makes the title unique.

Also what's stopping a company like Valve ripping off this idea and making there own game?
Valve typically just hires/buys the people/company behind a concept they like. See Left4Dead, Team Fortress, Portal, DoTA2, etc.

In honor of their Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spaceventure/two-guys-spaceventure-by-the-creators-of-space-que) hitting $200K, The Two Guys From Andromeda have released Prototype 2 of their demo, now with color, sound, and death sequences!

As before, the prototype has been released in the Chrome Store:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mhjbdidbieimmfipadjkioniffgcgopp

They're still working on getting it to run on other browsers (and potentially released on Apple's App Store).

There's an audio intro to the game here (http://guysfromandromeda.com/prototype-2-gogo/), but as it's 20 minutes long, I'll save you the trouble of listening to it. The basics for playing the game are:

You can right-click to toggle between walking, looking, and touching objects
There's 3 different death sequences worked into this version. Try and find them all!

I just finished playing it, and it really brought me back to the fun I had playing the original Space Quest games. The humor in the writing is spot-on in the same style, and just as good. It's great to have these two guys back together after 20 years.

For those that don't know, The Two Guys had a bit of a falling out prior to SQ5, and before this year hadn't spoken to each other since. So if anyone was looking at the Spaceventure Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spaceventure/two-guys-spaceventure-by-the-creators-of-space-que) but hadn't played the original Space Quest games, now's your chance to try them out cheap.

Space Quest 1 in this collection is the VGA remake of the game instead of the original. Space Quest 1 VGA was actually the first SQ game I played, and it retains the humor of the original with improved graphics and a simpler mouse-driven point-and-click interface, making it the better version for newcomers. Still, it's a shame the original SQ1 isn't included for completeness.

Note that some Windows 7 users are having problems playing in Full Screen mode. A few suggested solutions are here:

The SQ1 commentary by the Two Guys From Andromeda was moved from last night to noon today (6/1). For those that missed you you can view it here, although due to video capture issues, you have to download and play the audio separately:
http://www.twitch.tv/andromedaguys/b/320034637

It's somewhat interesting, as instead of playing through the game they instead had screenshots of every command and action in the game. So aside from the between animations (like watching the character walk), it was very close to watching someone play through the game.

They're doing another commentary for SQ2 tomorrow (6/2) at 12pm EDT. You can catch it live here:
http://www.twitch.tv/andromedaguys/

I'm guessing if these commentaries stay popular, they'll go through all of the SQ games.

The Two Guys From Andromeda are doing another commentary for SQ3 Sunday 6/3/12 at 2:00pm EST:
http://www.twitch.tv/andromedaguys

I actually watched the SQ2 commentary live, which was fun, since they respond to messages in the chat window. They also commented over video of a playthough of the game this time, so a little more lively than the last one.

Their archive of both shows lack audio due to some sort of glitch with the way justin.tv is rendering the sound. It works fine live, but I think the fact that the 3 speakers are each in different places (I think they're using Skype to voice chat) is messing it up. They're working on getting them up with both video and audio.

Speaking of SQ2, there's a fan-made VGA remake of the game that's available online for free:

The Two Guys passed $300K, so there should be another prototype on the way.

I just saw another point-and-click adventure game called Lilly Looking Through. They're already more than 50% funded only 4 days it, so it looks like a slam dunk to be funded. The reason I'm bringing it up is that beyond the trailer provided, there's a demo you can install and play. If you have any interest in adventure games, I recommend taking a look - the art direction and atmosphere is simply fantastic.

They also reference this video showing the art for a few SQ3 scenes being "drawn" in high speed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QPVfGq19f8

The music played during the playthrough of the game is mostly Roland MT-32 sound, which was a MIDI keyboard you hooked up to your PC. It provided better sound than even the Adlib sound, which was also a step up from the PC speaker sounds, but not many people had a Roland sound card back then. Here's info on Sierra's marketing effort to get people to buy sound cards, including an audio cassette with the SQ3 theme on it:
http://sierragamers.com/aspx/m/639853

The Amiga version of the game actually had a voice of Roger Wilco saying "Where am I" during the opening sequence:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nun5UnaHsZM&t=3m38s

As an added bonus, Ken and Roberta Williams (founders of Sierra) dropped into the chatroom to say hi and show their support for the SpaceVenture project. Ken popped in at about the 1 hour 8 min mark, and he got Roberta to say hi a little later.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/516151670/lilly-looking-through-an-animated-adventure-game
I played the demo for Lilly Looking Through, and it was really polished and well done, so I donated. I read an article recently that stated video game kickstarters are going to have to have a demo available in order for their projects to be successfully funded, since backers are going to want to see evidence that the developers can actually make the game they're proposing. I don't know if it's an absolute requirement, but it's certainly helpful.

I agree that it is definitely dependent upon the developer's track record. Jane Jensen and the Tex Murphy guys could put up a video that said nothing but, "Give me money!" and I probably would.

But that Lilly game looks like it is going to be a winner.

Speaking of Space Quest, I did pick up the compilation from Amazon and waiting for them to ship it to me. However, I am concerned that the Kickstarter for Two Guys is not going to make it. At their normal pace, 400-415k looks to be the max....even if it picks up in this last week, I'd say it will probably top out at 450ish (barring any last crazy push). That's really unfortunate, but I hope I am wrong.

There typically tends to be an upswing near the end of a Kickstarter, especially if it hasn't reached its goal yet. Republique had the craziest upswing, but there's plenty of projects that did a lot in the last few days.

I've read that the "Remind Me" button on Kickstarter sends people a reminder 2 days before the project ends. This brings in a lot of backers who might've forgotten about the project after looking at it a while ago, as well as others who hold off to the end, possibly only pledging if the project "needs" them to in order to reach its goal.

BTW, For anyone interested, you can play the original Space Quest for free online on this site:
http://sarien.net/

As noted before, the Activision CD and Steam collections contains only the VGA remake of SQ1, so even if you bought the disc collection it may be interesting to play the original. (interestingly, the GOG SQ 1-3 collection has the original SQ1 only, not the VGA remake).

It means they are excited to do it...which I appreciate the heck out of. I have them on remind me (leaning towards $30 for access to the beta and soundtrack), so I get those updates as well. And yeah, they do send out an email when it gets close which reminds me because usually I am pretty busy and have a tendency to forget. (*caugh* Leisure Suit Larry)

Well, they've been announcing the commentaries once a day for the past week, so those are on top of any other announcements they have. Yesterday was the most in terms of updates in one day, with separate updates for announcing the new character, updating the prototype to work on iPad, providing new wallpaper (featuring the new character), and announcing today's commentary.

I do think they could hold back on a few updates and combine them into one to make it easier on the inbox. For example, combining the character announcement and new wallpaper into one update would've been good. On the other hand, they're letting you know about developments as soon as they happen. I do think they're eager to let people know about these developments to help generate buzz.

I hope you don't cancel your pledge because of the updates. In case you don't know, you can always turn off notifications of updates for a specific campaign you're backing in your settings:

A recent Kickstarter has cause a small amount of controversy:
Sam Suede in Undercover Exposure (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1787675232/sam-suedetm-in-undercover-exposure/)

As this article (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117534-Its-Leisure-Suit-Larry-vs-Sam-Suede-on-Kickstarter) points out, this Kickstarter originally very prominently promoted Al Lowe's name on it, which upset Replay Games, who's making the Leisure Suit Larry remake.

It looks like they've modified the kickstarter, removing references to LSL and making it clearer the amount of involvement Lowe had in the game. Al Lowe has also made a statement regarding the project:
http://venturebeat.com/2012/05/30/leisure-suit-larry-creator-wants-infringing-kickstarter-campaign-taken-down-exclusive/
“I am not involved in any way with Wisecrack’s current production of Sam Suede. I am proud of the work I did on Sam back in 2006. When I left, the game’s design was nearly complete, but the text, where the humor lies, was barely started. I am not personally involved in any legal action against Wisecrack and wish them well implementing my game design without me.”

If I remember correctly, titles such as Police Takedown, Starflight Inception and Republique, all rallied with in the last 2-3 days to make it. Kicktraq doesn't have info on Takedown, but Starlight Inception (http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/732317316/starlight-inceptiontm/) made $77,891 in it's last 3 days, about half its budget. Republique (http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/486250632/republique-by-camouflaj-logan/) made $256,437 in it's last 3 days, again, nearly half its budget. Grim Dawn ("http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/crateentertainment/grim-dawn/) earned $124,553 in its last two days, despite already being over their goal.

So it depends on the amount of support they get, but they still have a solid chance of getting funded.

Anyone see any interesting new game kickstarters recently?

Did you see my earlier post about Dead state?

This looks pretty good:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...e-survival-rpg.

Zombie survival RPG.

Some good pedigree:

DoubleBear Productions is an indie RPG developer founded by Brian Mitsoda (formerly of Black Isle, Troika, and Obsidian - writer/designer for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines) and Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda (Obsidian, Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir).

We’ve assembled a team that has come from the indie (part of our team comes from Iron Tower Studio, creators of Age of Decadence - a turn-based RPG)

This is a pretty cool idea if it works, a trackball controller. (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/485185897/trackball-pc-game-controller)

Unfortunately he loses points for revamping the PS3 controller and talks about it being more ergonomic in the process. Glancing at YouTube, it also appears he's not the first to do this.

Well, it looks like the rush of high-profile revival projects has died down. Nothing too ambitious currently on the site.

Zombie Playground and Lilly Looking Through both were successfully funded.

Only 5 hours left on the zombie RPG Dead State:

I liked it better when it was called the Pocket TV and came with Google Play:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/484889112/the-pocket-tv-makes-any-tv-a-smart-tv

Of course, the Pocket TV is intended to be a more all-purpose "Android on TV" experience.

I was initially turned off by the OUYA requiring all games be F2P, but their FAQ clarifies that "this means [that] there will at least be a free demo..." which means it won't be too different than current Android apps that often offer a "lite" or "free" version. It also means it won't be too different from most consoles, which normally offer demos on almost all the available games.

The makers of Defense Grid have started a Kicstarter to fund the creation of a sequel:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hiddenpath/defense-grid-2

For $15 you get the original game and an expansion if they hit their goal of $250,000. Then you'll get additional features as they hit stretch goals, including DG2 if they raise $1 million.

The first game is on sale for cheap on Steam right now:

We've been asked this a few times, so I thought I'd share the answer we're putting up in the FAQ. I'm happy to try and answer any other questions you have as well

Don’t you have enough money already for DG2, from DG1 or Valve on CS:GO?

We put everything we had into Defense Grid; we wanted the game to be able to reach a lot of people, and looking back we probably sold the game at too low a price. It paid for it’s cost, but not enough for us to make DG2 on our own. It takes a lot of money to make games (especially ones with 3d art instead of 2d sprites). We've been pitching it for several years but it's not f2p social (where the money is now in small games), or AAA (where the money is in big games). We still think there's enough interest to be successful, but that's what we're finding out by doing a Kickstarter.

Since Defense Grid shipped, we’ve been working for other folks who look for people who make high quality games – most recently Valve for the Counter-Strike franchise – and that has been great work that helps our team gel even further and allows us to create great game experiences, but it also isn’t going to provide enough to fund a Defense Grid 2.

Tempting especially since I put a sizable chunk down on the PC Game. I love the fact that it will be FTP though. I'll do the reminder thing.

But when you think about it, it might be a bit of bad planning. Yes they are separate, but people will view them as together and think this is a bit too soon for asking for more money. Ideally, they should have waited until the middle of fall. Just my two cents.

Wow, I hadn't realized that to get DG2, they're asking for One Meelllion Dollars in funding and that the $250,000 goal just gives an 8-level expansion. They should just partner with Valve instead -- as you point out, DG2 is just a pipe dream at Kickstarter.

Actually, 250k gets you DG2 when it's eventually made. Not getting to 1M just means they can't fund it outright and it will have to wait while they work for the man on other projects.

That wasn't very clear and it's a fallacy that still permeates the blogs.

Are you sure? Here's what it says right on their page FAQs

Q: Exactly what do I get for a $15 pledge? Do I get DG2 if we cross $1m raised?
A: Yes, for a $15 pledge, you get any digital game content we are able to make with the money raised. If we raise $250k, then you'll get DG:Containment. If we raise $500k, you'll get DG:Containment and the remastered DG1 with multiplayer. If we raise $750k, you'll get DG:Containment, the remastered DG1 with multiplayer, the level editor, and Mac & Linux versions. If we raise $1m you'll get DG:Containment & DG2 for sure, and the community can vote on whether they want us to have us make a remastered DG1 with multiplayer, level editor and Mac & Linux, or just put those resources towards a larger DG2 which will also have multiplayer, level editor and Mac and Linux.

I was trying to find confirmation of what you just posted and didn't actually see it there. But I only scanned briefly. Can you post your source?

edit: Found it. Not too promising, though.
Q: What will happen with DG2 if you fund one of the lower tiers only?

We're in this to make DG2. But, we don't have the money to do so. If we did, we likely would be already 1/2 way done. So this is our way of turning to you to make DG2. But we recognize that any time anyone asks for a large amount of money it's a tough ask. So, we came up with a development plan to get to DG2, came up with things we could deliver along the way, and created the tiers.

But, as people donate and wonder if it can reach the full amount, they ask - what will happen, and the answer is we'll keep trying to make DG2, and we'll get a portion of the way because of you whether that's 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 or more. And for anything we raise here, we will focus on delivering you the things we promised (that's a big deal to us - you're trusting us and we have to deliver for you to keep this partnership going), and then once we deliver everything we promised, we'll do what we can to come up with the rest. We'll sell the pieces that make sense to sell and use the proceeds, we'll work on other games for other people if we need to and save any profit, and we'll work to complete the full DG2. When we do - and that may be more than a year out if we don't raise everything needed in this kickstarter - you will still get a code for DG2 when it is released. We won't forget you or how you helped us get as far as we will get through this campagin.

Pledge $15 or more

1808 backers

First, you get a Steam code for a free copy of the original Defense Grid (PC) game immediately: as soon as we know you are a backer, even before funding closes. Then in December (we estimate), you'll get a digital copy of DG:Containment, and after that you'll get any new DG content funded from this Kickstarter when development is complete – you’ll also get DG2 – either funded directly from this Kickstarter or later when we are able to release it ourselves. We'll also create a new private forum for backers that you can join.

I mean, they even got KS to let them amend the verbiage on the lowest tier. It's not exactly hidden (path) ;)

Article on the Oculus Rift:
http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/behind-the-scenes-with-the-oculus-rift-the-hardware-that-could-change-the-w

The developers go out of their way to discourage regular consumers from backing the Kickstarter; the headset in the Kickstarter is specifically for game developers, and the eventual consumer version will have a host of improvements.

Defense Grid 2 now has new tiers that offer just the game and a discounted AMD video card. You can get an AMD Radeon HD 6870 for as little as $105, and an AMD Radeon HD 6770 for as little as $85:

I don't know if it's due to the addition of those tiers, but the DG2 fund has exploded over the last 3 days. $36,000 so far and that's after averaging 2.5-3k/day for the last two weeks.

Suffice it to say, I'm very happy it's on pace to hit the original goal, so at least something happens.
