Serena (Dir: Susanne Bier) (B. Cooper, J. Lawrence, T. Jones, R. Ifans)

The film follows newlyweds George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence) who travel from Boston to the mountains of North Carolina where they begin to build a timber empire in 1929. Serena soon shows herself to be the equal of any man: overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man's life in the wilderness. Together, this king and queen rule their dominion, killing or vanquishing all who stand in the way of their ambitions. But when Serena learns that she can never bear a child, she sets out to murder the woman who bore George a son before his marriage. And when she starts to suspect that George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons' intense, passionate marriage begins to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning.
based off a pretty popular novel by Ron Rash (heh...rash...) Never heard of it. Plot is pretty interesting to me though. The director made Brothers (the original..not the remake) and In a Better World. Never seen her other work but...I'll keep my eye on this.

I'd almost swear we had another thread on this. Didn't even remember making this one.

Yeah it's been released every else in the world it seems except here, I think they were going to capitalize on the cast but realized it's just an absolute shit movie.

Damn. Always interesting to see how films end up like that.

Wow, it only took three posts to bump from 2012 to 2014 to 2015. Three years in three posts--that's gotta be some kind of record.

The BBC film show to which I listen reviewed it some time ago, I think it's been in the can (or rather on the hard drive) for a couple of years now. Even with two stars who are hot properties now, it still doesn't seem to be finding distribution.

Dreadfully dull and unfocused movie with very little redeeming value beyond a couple well acted scenes and a somber/haunting score. Take out the credits and its only 100 minutes long but boy did it feel a lot longer than that.

My understanding is the stars are more or less disowning it.

I am not surprised, Oscar winning director Susanne Bier is the female version of Steven Daldry. One of the most heavy handed clichéd directors out there.

Heavy-handed and lover of symbalism right to the end when
Spoiler:
Cooper gets mauled by a panther he's been hunting and the camera pans up for an overhead shot of the two together, dead. So laughable

Jennifer Lawrence as a Mexican singer? I think Jennifer Lopez did it better.

What's next Joel Edgerton playing a middle eastern guy.
