Hello Otters!

I am in grad school and currently taking a class about online communities. For our final paper, we are each analyzing an online community of our choosing. I am writing specifically about DVD Talk and also in general about internet message forums as a type of online community.

I could use your help. I would love to get some feedback from the community about your usage and attitudes toward DVD Talk. I have created a survey and it would be a great help if you could fill it out. Most of the questions are optional but the open-text responses would be especially helpful for me.

Here is the survey, if you have a few minutes:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEhEUXAwLUx2QkZid29XNlVYN1FYa2c6MQ

Also if you would like to share any memories of DVD Talk, or memorable threads, feel free to do so here in the thread as well. Thanks!

Memories?

Yeah. There used to be this really cool subforum called Adult Talk. We had some great times there. Too bad I can't tell you about them.

I'm not terribly social.

I did set up a Facebook page some years ago, because my friends told me I needed to. Every once in a while I go there and try to figure out what I am supposed to do with it.

I still don't know how it's supposed to help your business.

Do you guys remember that one thread about the guy on eBay who was selling things for almost for free with free shipping, and we thought he was retarded or something and we bought stuff from him, and I think we even started sending it to one another?

I'll fill this thing out soon.

The only thread of mine that ever gained any traction if I remember correctly was when my niece was dating someone much older than herself, and I made a thread about it here and didn't include hardly any information at all other than her general location, and then my fellow Otters started to research it, found his MySpace page, and just started to bombard him with messages about him being a pedophile and stuff like that.

I've actually spent time thinking about this.

As much as this forum has been an integral part of my life for 14 years now; I could die today and it would be months before someone noticed and wrote "whatever happened to that Challenge guy, what's his name, Terry?" :(

I still don't know how it's supposed to help your business.

By communicating with your customers. Note, this doesn't help every business. Mike's Concrete will probably not need this. I find it most useful (from the perspective of a customer), when I am informed of special events (I am a fan of several venues and bands), or when a food/drinking establishment reveals something (new menu item, specials, event at the establishment).

I actually find small businesses, who tend to have a much closer relationship with their clients, to be much, much, much better users of social media.

This is an area I work in, and it's astounding how much money is spent by large corporations and how little many have to show for it.

If I remember correctly, you either run a gallery or an art studio. This, to me, seems to be the definition of the type of business that would benefit from more communication: when an opening is, what fair/event you'll be at, new works you've done, etc.

The key is to make sure you are not over communicating. For a place where I may go every 1-3 months (say, a barber shop or hair salon), it doesn't make sense to post something every day.

I forgot to mention Sheep games in the survey! Doh!!!

The only thing I mentioned.

I find it most useful (from the perspective of a customer), when I am informed of special events (I am a fan of several venues and bands), or when a food/drinking establishment reveals something (new menu item, specials, event at the establishment).Gourmet food trucks use social networks very well to let customers know where they'll be. Or they'll say if they're NOT going to be at a scheduled place. That has saved me a trip and I thought it was very cool of them to keep their customers informed.

I went to a local pizza place and mentioned it on Twitter. I had not idea they were also on Twitter and was surprised when they gave me a shout-out thanking me and asking me how it was. I added them to my Follow list and turns out they are very active on Twitter with specials and whatnot.
