Shoot Straight. Conserve Ammo. And Never Cut a Deal With A Dragon.

Jordan Weisman, the creator of Shadowrun, is back and Shadowrun Returns*(for Apple & Android tablets and PCs) is the game that Shadowrun fans have been waiting for a long time. A graphically rich 2D turn-based single player game with deep story interaction, meaningful character development, and highly-contextual tactical combat, Shadowrun Returns is not only going to make some old geeks (like us) very happy but it will introduce new players to a dynamic gaming universe that is beloved around the world.*

While it seems that kick starters getting over saturated, I have enough fond memories of shadowrun pnp as well as the sega game

Kickstarter is bleeding me dry with this retro stuff. I'm in for this, Wasteland 2, and Leisure Suit Larry.

I used to play Shadowrun on the Genesis and SNES. Fun times.

A real Shadowrun game would be impressive. $15 isn't really that bad either if it ends being even half as good as it sounds. (And thanks Duran ;), now I might be interested in the Lesiure Suit Larry one too). Is it wrong of me though to wish that these would come to Xbox Live though? I just don't care for PC games even though as of a few months ago I have a machine that actually supports most modern games. I write, I surf the web, I facebook, I mess with graphics but really don't care to game. :)

I'll think about these two projects though and possibly donate.

I wish at a certain tier (well $100 or under anyway), they would do a physical copy with box. But maybe if it gets enough funding they will do it. Interested in that editor even if it is ugly (now with a little more lipstick *lawls*)

They might be waiting on that for future pushes, you can't give all your goodies/videos all at once..you have to stagger to keep the interest up.

I think the problem is that consoles are somewhat expensive as platforms (for a community-funded game, anyway). Tim Schaefer mentioned it was around $40,000 to patch a game on XBLA. It's probably higher just to get the game on it, and I think with these projects they want to put as much into the game itself, rather than licensing fees.

We'll see what Double Fine does with their adventure game. They raised so much that I would think that if any of these projects could get on the consoles, it's that one. But if they pass, I wouldn't hold out much hope for the others.

I recently donated to kickstarter for a buddy's short film. I couldn't imagine donating to it for something that doesn't have any personal connection. Just my thoughts (well not grundle too's thoughts).

I've donated to about half a dozen projects -- all video games and comics (because I still think like a 12 year old boy, apparently). One was a friend's project; the rest were all things where I wanted the rewards at the price being offered. All have been from reputable authors/developers -- people with a track record of putting out product, so I'm hopefully not throwing money at vaporware.

My pledges have been primarily for board games. They have all had exclusive KS items which makes them extremely tradeable if the game is disliked.

Republique has lots of promise, but I don't feel the need to kick in $15+ donation for a game that will be in the sub $5 price range.

I don't mind Kickstarter helping get games made, I just haven't seen one that has grabbed my attention yet.

Kedrix

Well I was thinking about the $100 tier, now with the box set on the $125, I almost have to consider that instead (since that is one of the main things I was looking for in the beginning). Glad it made the over million, but there was little doubt once it hit the initial goal so quickly. I think about it for another week and then act.

We're sweetening the deal for our $30 Reward Level backers! In addition to everything they already get, they’ll also get the IN-GAME DocWagon benefit too!
A Reminder: Every backer at the $50 level and above gets their own copy of the SOUNDTRACK!
Reading through the comments about the Backer T-shirts, we see lots of fans for all three designs, so we’ve decided NOT to survey backers about which shirt back you want most. INSTEAD, backers at the $60.00 level and above get to choose which shirt they want!

Today, we’re incredibly excited to announce that Marshall Parker, who wrote the music for the Super Nintendo game and Sam Powell, who wrote the music for the Sega Genesis game, have agreed to COLLABORATE on the music for Shadowrun Returns.

Awesome, for the backer shirts I was leaning towards the gray w/ blue just because it is different from all of the black shirts I own. The only negative to that shirt is that it does not actually say Shadowrun which is odd compared to the other two.

ShadowRun is in its final hours, Its made its final 'stretch' goal of 1.75. (with paypal it is over 1.8)

I think it gets close to 2 million, maybe like 1.90 (including paypal). I think they could hit 2 million if there was additional details about the game/new rewards..looks like they are good of just riding this to the end, the last few updates they haven't offered any new game ideas or rewards.

I did my pledge yesterday afternoon (all $125 of it)...and they ended up at well over 1.8 million (supposedly almost 1.9 once they included the paypal stuff). I just hope they keep up regular updates since it will be next year before we see the actual game. But I am super excited, and can't wait to see the level editor among other things.

Apparently it is now a run-off according to the latest update between Berlin and Hong Kong because the difference between the 2 was less than 1% (which is kinda crazy when you think about it).

Yeah, I think I have to revert back to Hong Kong then.

I've been keeping up with the Kickstarters, and this game is looking super awesome, seriously (I'm in for like $125). What's better is that we get the editor to make our own adventures. I know that I am going to try and create something and maybe push the sucker to its limit.

In other news, I'm also trying to write a piece of fan fiction (and hopefully have it morph into something else), but unfortunately I've written myself into a couple of holes and trying to figure my way out :). It will certainly be a Shadowrun second half of this year.

Steam Keys are being sent out to backers ahead of the release of the game on July 25th.

Everything I have seen so far makes me feel the game will be a success, but this will be game 2 of my backed projects to come out.

Kedrix
07-16-13, 08:29 AM
Oddly enough, this is the first game I backed, and the first one that is coming out, ahead of Shadowrun Online, the TwoGuys SpaceVenture, Road Redemption and Tug. I really could care less about Steam Keys as I have a boxed copy coming but it probably won't be there until the first or second week of August. But I am hugely excited about the game. Should be a lot of fun and it will give me something to play on my PC for a change. Bring it!

Wow, I didn't know that. Pretty weak. I'm definitely just going to hold off.

They mention they might add in a loot system in the future, although I can't see how doable that would be without making them have to basically go through the entire game to add it.

Got my steam keys today (3 of them in fact at my pledge level, lawls). It's kinda funny because I have never even messed with Steam before. I'll probably just wait for the DRM free stuff as well as my physicals :). And I know the idea of no loot or saves only at checkpoints...but my major excitement comes from it just being Shadowrun and I get to write my own freaking adventures. That's all I need, seriously. (As long as I can figure out the editor)

Apparently with backers created campaigns, there is loot, but instead of it dropping on the ground to be picked up diablo style, it is deposited into your inventory.

This Mission/Campaign editor has great potential for user created content.

Eurogamer review. 8/10

For those who just want to relive the isometric action of the SNES and Megadrive days, Shadowrun Returns easily delivers. It's not the deepest or most flexible game of its type, but there's a lot to be said for simple ideas realised intuitively. Add in some excellent writing and, judged purely as a standalone game, it's an unambiguous success.

There's more to Shadowrun Returns though. Much more. And it won't be until the community gets its hands on the editor, starts remixing the current material and generating its own, that the game will really begin to blossom. When it does, the patience of the hardcore will be well rewarded.

It sounds like the framework is great, but the actual game so far is quite lackluster. I'll wait this one out. I'm sure the user generated content will make it more interesting.

edit: Wow, this sounds downright awful. Hopefully they change this at some point:
The lack of healing options shines a particularly unforgiving light on Shadowrun Returns' save system. During combat sequences — which can often stretch for as long as 15-20 minutes of turn-based life or death — it's game over if your character goes down, which throws you back to the last autosave. There's no manual saving in Shadowrun Returns anywhere in the game, whether you're in combat or back home. More than once I spent twenty or thirty minutes between missions tweaking my character, talking to NPCs gathering information and generally preparing myself for the next step only to realize that I couldn't save. It's a weird "screw you" to the idea of experimentation in almost every area of the game, because experimenting could cost you half an hour or more of time as you try to roll back the changes you made. It's a bizarre, borderline-unacceptable omission in 2013.

Most of the reviews are echoing similar themes. Gameplay is linear, but the story/writing is top notch. Lack of manual saves is frustrating, but this game has great potential with the Modding Community.

Kedrix

Welp, I fully plan to be messing with the editor and since it does save (but apparently not as much as it should), I will certainly try extra hard to implement a system where the saves are much more timely. There is bound to be a way. I think this game will really blossom based on the user-created content and that's where I plan to spend most of my time.

Yes. Everything I've read makes it sound like the actual game is lackluster. The broken saving system (yes, broken), no real loot (except for user generated content working around this), linear story, simplistic gameplay, hacking minigame is terrible, etc, etc. Doesn't scream "must buy immediately" to me, at all.

I was going to pick it up earlier but missed the presale price on steam by 1 minute...now I will just wait until it is under 10 bucks.

So I downloaded it and played it for about 90 minutes today. Enough to go through a couple of areas and see what's going on. The game reminds me completely of X-Com with the combat and the view. I love the combat but it is very unforgiving for sure. While there isn't loot per say, there are at least items to pick up when you are not fighting. When it comes to loot, I'm already seeing ways around it for user-created campaigns. That's not so bad.

Now, the save system is going to be interesting to manipulate. It auto-saves every time you enter a building or go to a different area. The obvious option here would be make a bunch of buildings you can enter, thus creating save spots. It will also be interesting to see if in the tools you can create re-enter buildings, i.e. things you can simply go back into when you want to save. So far, every building I've went into I couldn't go back into...hope that's not a continuing trend.

There is a ton of potential here, and as I mentioned before the community will define this game one way or another. The included campaign does have a strong story, and I really do like the gameplay outside of the obvious stuff people have already mentioned. It feels very turn of this century would be the best way to describe it but in a good way. The game is fun, but if you don't like X-Com mechanics or need a game with saving anywhere anytime and mountains of loot (though I think you could get imaginative with that in the tools), then yeah this isn't for you.
