I was going to use my GF's three year old laptop (Toshiba Satellite A305D) when it would not turn on. I held the power button for ten seconds and still nothing.

I unplugged the AC cord and took out the battery and let it sit a while.

I plugged the AC cored back in and the "AC light" lit up. I put the battery back in and the "battery light" lit up. I hit the power button and instantly the lights went out and nothing happened.

Any ideas? Did the mobo die?

Try it with the battery out. I had an older laptop that wouldn't turn on if the battery was in.

probably a long shot, but try leaving the laptop plugged in for a few hours then try the power button. I think this is supposed to charge some battery in the motherboard if the laptop hasn't been used in a long time. was that the case, or the laptop was used regularly and suddenly had problems?

Well, the hard drive might still be working.

If you want to see if you can recover some data, You can try taking it out and putting it to a USB adapter. For a laptop of that age, I'd guess it's a 2.5" 160-250 GB SATA drive, so might be a good spare.
