I can't believe the 2011 film by Béla Tarr has no thread here among the cinephiles. He calls it his "last film," which is appropriate since it seems to exist on the edge of an apocalypse of sorts. So far, though it is very arty, it's the best film I have seen this year. Check out my review, and let me know what you think:

I am definitely interested in watching this. I am a fan of his work and IMO Werckmeister Harmonies is one of the greatest films of all time.

Never heard of the guy, I think. I'll have to check him out. Where would be a good place to start in his films?

I would recommend you start with Werckmeister Harmonies.

It has been noted.

If you ever plan on buying, I would recommend that you get the Region 2 dvd's of his films.
The R1 versions are of inferior quality and overpriced.

From wiki (oft-quoted quip):
"Susan Sontag championed Tarr as one of the saviors of the modern cinema, saying she would gladly watch Sátántangó once a year."

But do note that film is just over 7 hours long.

supposedly the film opens this Friday at yet unnamed theater here in Washington DC. Missed the screenings at last Fall's UVA Film Festival and AFI's EU film fest - so I'm anxious to see it.

Turin Horse is currently in theaters, making its way across the country. But we'll have an announcement soon about the film's home video release.

oops I was wrong, it's playing down at the West End Cinema currently - wasn't around last weekend since I was in Columbus Ohio for the NCAA tournament.

the US one-sheet is wonderfully vague:

Great! The extras have made it a must-buy for me. Nice to see Rosenbaum on the commentary. He's an amazing, rare intellectual of cinema criticism.

Saw it last year at the Denver International Film Festival. Pretty Great movie, it is one of those movies that I feel better for seeing, but not sure I could sit through it again. I will have to revisit at some point.
