Amazon Prime is about Free Shipping. The free streaming is just a bonus. On it's own, I don't feel that the Prime Streaming is worth $79 per year. There's definitely good stuff to watch, but the overall selection of titles is very limited.

Correct. The free-streaming stuff is older catalog like you'd find on Netflix streaming. Newer releases--or stuff that for whatever reason is just not available free--you have to pay to rent (or purchase).
As TheBigDave said, I consider the streaming a bonus. I've had Prime for a while for the shipping benefits but used very little of the streaming, mostly because I don't have an easy way to watch it on my TV. PS3 is a positive step, though.

<3 the $.99 movies... I watch a lot of stuff I'd otherwise skip on disc.
I love that it's mostly recent stuff at Amazon. The other streaming VOD services have $0.99 specials, but the movies are usually old catalog titles.
I also like that you have 30 days to start watching the movie (when you rent it through Amazon's website). So I can grab a $0.99 movie and then watch it whenever I have time.

Is this new? If I rent it on the website, can I then play it on my Roku on day 28 (assuming I didn't play it before that?)
b2net

Your 48 hour playing period starts when you actually push play. I have done it on day 29 or 30 as long it is before it "expires"... and then had 48 hours to watch it.. I wish it was like this when I order it using my BD player.. there.. the 48 hour rental period begins right away.. but I can only rent HD on my player.. ugh..

Thanks. So, does Amazon remind you when you're getting close to your expiry date? I worry that I'll stack up a bunch of rentals then forget that they're there.
I usually just rent SD on my Roku, but I certainly have the option for HD. What's disappointing is that the HD rental isn't always discounted at the same time as the SD... at least, that's how it appears on the Roku. The SD will be $0.99 or $1.99, but the HD is always $4.99. In those cases, I'm totally fine renting the SD, but I'd gladly pay an extra $1 for HD.
b2net
04-12-12, 06:20 PM
I go to Amazon Instant Video by selecting it via Shop by Department... there is a selection there called "Your Video Library".. I click on movies.. and it shows me the date and time the rentals expire.. Also via my BD Player when I select my Library and hover over the titles.. It shows the expiration date...
b2net
04-12-12, 06:22 PM
btw.. on the $1 more thing.. I think they could hook more money if they offered the upgrade for only $1 more when accessing it via our players for titles we bought online.. and often the weekend deals are $1.99 SD / $2.99 HD... yet I agree.. most times.. it is $4.99 for HD.. er.. uh.. no thanks..
TheBigDave
04-13-12, 12:36 AM
I agree, it's disappointing that Amazon doesn't offer a discounted HD version for the daily $0.99 sales. I'd be willing to pay an extra $1-$2 for a high def version. But at least the SD stream looks pretty decent.
I've never received notification for an expiring rental. And I've had a couple expire before I got around to watching them. However, it's pretty easy to check on your rentals using the Your Video Library section on Amazon's Roku channel.

Seriously? How odd... I have never rented via my PS3 so I didn't know.
What does Amazon have against computers? I can't even rent a HD movie with my computer (not that I would at $4.99 anyway), yet I can rent HD with my PS3. I should also note that I can rent HD via computer on VUDU.
b2net
04-13-12, 02:09 PM
It does seem odd... We can only rent/buy/watch SD from the PC for movies, but can buy/watch HD TV episodes. Yet all options are available via devices. Having a month to start a viewing period on the PC, but viewing period starts right away on a device.
I wish we could rent/buy/watch SD & HD via PC and no matter where rented have 30 days to start viewing period (and alway 48 or more hours for viewing period).

This might be better in a new thread, but does anyone have an easy way of finding the theatrical or pre-theatrical releases on Amazon Instant Video. For example, The Hunter, starring Willem Dafoe, is on there ( http://www.amazon.com/The-Hunter/dp/B007G5GMMC/ref=sr_1_1?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1334462874&sr=1-1 ). It's not playing theatrically in my town, so this is a great addition. Sure it's a few dollars more than a typical rental, but IMO, it's worth it to see it in advance of the DVD/Blu-ray release.
Should we have a thread that highlights these types of releases as they appear?

I don't know of the best way to find that info, but this might help. Go to the Amazon Instant Video section. Select "Movies > All Movies" on the sidebar. Then select "Purchase Type > Rental". And finally select "Price > $5 to $10".
That's the typical price range for Pre-Theatrical and Pre-DVD rentals. There's a couple titles like Albert Nobbs and Goon that don't come out on DVD until next month. And some Pre-Theatrical titles like Meeting Evil and God Bless America.
Sounds like a good idea for a thread. Or we could just list them here.

Copied from the Hot Deals threads....
Perhaps a price mistake but while I was browsing some older black & white TV shows that are favorites of mine, I see that many have entire seasons priced at $9.99.
Leave It To Beaver (Season 5) was one of those but it also displayed the ENTIRE SEASON run of 39 episodes at $0.99.
Immediately did the 1-click purchase. It's mine! Amazing deal!!!
Other shows that I was browsing include Donna Reed Show, & Father Knows Best. Entire seasons of 35+ episodes are priced $9.99.
Remember these are from Amazon Instant Video for the streaming and NOT the DVD disc versions.
Edit: in checking my purchase invoice, I see it was INDEED charged $0.99 and it used the recent $3 Amazon Instant Video credit that I received via Twitter. :) $0.00 cost to me and $2.01 credit left.

excellent, thank you.
what's wrong with amazon on most of their instant video prices? $53.99 for season 2 of the flintstones!?! a great deal of the movies/tv shows i'd like to buy are far cheaper on blu than instant video.
they're practically giving away blu-rays and charging an arm and a leg for streaming content which is far cheaper on the production end than paying for all of the packaging, etc for physical media.

Heh ;) No deals, no Amazon streaming for me.
The quality isn't that great and I have 5 Redbox locations within a couple miles.

Via their Twitter, Wallace and Gromit Complete Collection is $1.99 today. Not a huge deal, but basically four episodes/films for the price of one. I got it because short and witty seems like a good thing to have on digital.
None of those four are particularly special at that price. :(

Are you an Amazon Prime member? If so, there's a whole library of free streaming titles. If not, you won't find much free stuff.
There's usually a couple free TV episodes. Check the latest posts in this thread for updates:

I believe that to be correct... no HD from a PC/MAC... but it is great that you can now pay for the HD via the web-site.. and have 30 days before starting your 48 hour viewing period... prior to this you could only rent HD via your streaming device.. which starts the 48 hour viewing period right away... which can be a bummer with these sales... cause you may want to rent something to watch later..

Yeah, it's a little silly I have to go to my computer to even look for things to watch that aren't featured. Especially since they have the ability to display things by category. Mine was showing Action and Adventure last night but I couldn't change it to another one.

I'm fine with that. Netflix doesn't let you add to your queue with their app either. But not being able to browse the streaming content by category is stupid. Especially since they have categories in there, they just pick which ones you get to see.

Amazon Prime picked up the EPIX catalog that Netflix lost earlier this year. Lots of great titles.
Great news for Amazon Prime members—we've just signed two big deals that bring you even more high quality movies and TV shows with all-you-can-eat, unlimited instant streaming. The first is with EPIX and brings movies from Paramount Pictures, MGM, and Lionsgate. Enjoy Thor, Iron Man 2, and Captain America: The First Avenger, plus recent hits such as Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Warrior, Super 8, True Grit, and Rango. In all, 2,000 movies from EPIX will be coming to Prime Instant Video this year.
Wow, that's surprising that Netflix let their deal with Epix run out. That's another huge loss along with the Starz library.

Amazon, A&E deal brings Pawn Stars, Storage Wars and Dance Moms to Prime Instant Video
Those in need of another reason to stare at their computer screen for long stretches of time will be pleased to learn that Amazon has struck a deal with A&E Networks that'll be bringing shows from its titular network, along with History, Bio and Lifetime to the online retailer's Prime Instant Video service. Amongst the arty entertainment offerings are Pawn Stars, Storage Wars and Dance Moms, which users will be able to consume en masse on a number of devices including the iPad, iPhone, Roku, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U.
Amazon really needs to jump into ultraviolet. I understand that they are part of it already, implement!

:thmbsdwn: to them getting A&E crap.
I'd rather have them spend some money to Scripps and get Travel Channel's back catalogue of No Reservations, The Layover, Bizarre Foods Samantha Brown and all their other travel specials.

I wish someone would get it. Even if it's Hulu with their crappy commercials. Especially the old stuff like Great Hotels and Passport To Europe.

Hulu actually has some Travel Channel shows. However, the back catalogue is really really limited. I think they have select episodes from random seasons of Bizarre Foods, No Reservations and Samantha Brown. It's web only.

Amazon opens up Instant Video Finder to public beta
Amazon has launched a beta version of its Instant Video Finder feature, in an attempt to organize the streaming video catalog for its users. The new Finder will give suggestions on the website for what someone will want to watch via the Instant Video and Prime Instant Video streaming services, based on not only broad categories, but also through different moods and general themes, of what has already been watched.
Normal categories such as Comedy, Drama, Animation, and Action/Adventure are joined by some fairly abnormal categories. Feel-Good and Exciting options suggest films that would be uplifting to the viewer, while other category titles are more for those wanting to watch a specific narrow type of film, such as Time Travel, Sea Adventure, Police Procedural, and Dystopian.
Those consumers who don't want to upgrade from the Nintendo Wii to Wii U just yet but still want to get video streaming for their console are in luck. Amazon announced today that its Instant Video service is now available on the Wii.
"Amazon Instant Video is now playing on your Nintendo Wii," the video service wrote on its Web page. "Start watching over 140,000 movies and TV episodes today. Prime members can also watch thousands of these videos at no additional cost."
Amazon Instant Video: Nintendo Wii $5 Credit Offer
To receive this promotion:
1. Register a Nintendo Wii console with Amazon Instant Video for the first time between January 24, 2013 and February 28, 2013. Only first time registrations are eligible - customers who register a Wii that was previously registered are ineligible for this promotion. Limit one per customer.
2. Your credit in the amount of $5 will be automatically applied to your account after successful registration and will be applied to your purchase or rental of eligible movies or TV episodes. This credit will expire on June 30, 2013.
Amazon Prime now has an exclusive deal for streaming Downton Abbey.
Good news for Prime members. We've just completed a deal with PBS to make Prime Instant Video the exclusive subscription home for streaming Downton Abbey's Season 3 starting in June, and all new seasons for years to come. Prior Seasons 1 and 2, already the most popular TV seasons on Prime Instant Video, are available now for catch up viewing—and will also become exclusive to Prime Instant Video later this year.
If you can't wait until June for Season 3, you can also buy each episode at Amazon Instant Video the day after it airs. And starting now, we're also making the last three weeks of this season's episodes available to purchase before they air on TV in the US. When you buy a TV Pass to Downton Abbey's Season 3, or if you already have one, you will receive all remaining episodes instantly.
Amazon & CBS Announce Deal To Bring Stephen King Series “Under The Dome” To Prime Instant Video, Four Days After Episodes Air
Continuing its rapid-fire addition of new content deals, Amazon announced today that it has signed an agreement with CBS which will bring the forthcoming summer TV series “Under the Dome,” based on a best-selling Stephen King novel, to Amazon’s Prime Instant Video. This deal is unusual because it allows Amazon Prime members to stream all the series’ episodes four days after their initial broadcast, instead of 24 hours afterwards, as was previously speculated.
That makes the new agreement for “Under the Dome” notable – it’s a hint that CBS is at least willing to experiment with streaming an ongoing, broadcast series, even if it’s not offering day after viewing.
However, as Hollywood Reporter notes, CBS had ordered 13 episodes of the series in November, under an innovative financing structure which had the network seeking a video-on-demand partner from the start. The arrangement made it financially feasible to produce a high-end, scripted show at lower license fees, the report explains.
The show, produced by CBS and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, tells the story of a small New England town that is suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The network premiere takes place on June 24, 2013. It will then be free for Amazon Prime subscribers four days after airing, and can be streamed on users’ iOS devices, Kindle Fire HD, game consoles, and elsewhere.

Amazon and CBS Announce Expanded Content Licensing Agreement
CBS Corporation and Amazon.com, Inc. today announced an expanded content licensing agreement to bring classic series and hit TV shows from CBS Television Distribution and Showtime Networks to Amazon's Prime Instant Video service, extending the already vast catalog of CBS content available for Prime members to instantly stream, and enjoy at no additional cost.
With this agreement, popular CBS and Showtime series coming to Prime Instant Video for the first time include America's Next Top Model, Everybody Loves Raymond, Jericho, The L Word, Undercover Boss and United States of Tara, among others. In addition, fan-favorite TV series such as Medium, The Tudors, the complete Star Trek franchise, I Love Lucy, and more, will continue to be available for Prime members to stream, commercial-free at no additional cost on Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Roku, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Wii U, among other devices.
Amazon Prime Instant Video gets exclusive rights to 'Justified'
Amazon just acquired new arms in its streaming video fight with Netflix, announcing today that it picked up exclusive rights to stream the hit FX gunslinging series Justified on Amazon Prime Instant Video, as well as the nonexclusive rights to stream FX's LAPD drama The Shield. Both shows come from a new licensing agreement between Amazon and Sony Pictures Television. Justified had been previously available through Amazon Instant Video, the pay-per-view service, for $1.99 per episode, where it became one of the "most watched shows" in the catalog, according to Amazon. But now Amazon Prime members will have unlimited access to episodes of Justified plus The Shield as part of their $79-per-year membership, which also includes free two-day shipping. The move comes on the heels of Amazon locking down Downton Abbey exclusively, including forthcoming seasons.
Update: An Amazon spokesperson tells The Verge that its exclusive rights to Justified include all seasons past and upcoming, and that seasons one through three are available for streaming now. Season four, which is currently airing, won't be up on Prime until just before season five begins. But you can still buy new episodes from season four the day after they air on Amazon Instant Video for the $1.99 pay-per-view price. The Shield concluded in 2008 and all seven seasons are already up on Prime Instant.
Shows from HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel and Travel Channel Coming to Prime Instant Video and Amazon Instant Video
Amazon.com, Inc. today announced a content licensing agreement with Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc. that will make Prime Instant Video a subscription home to hundreds of episodes from past seasons of hit TV shows from the Scripps family of brands: HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel and Travel Channel.
Starting today, Prime members will be able to instantly view hundreds of episodes of original programming, including Rachael Ray’s Week in a Day; Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations; Cupcake Wars; Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives; House Hunters and House Hunters International; Iron Chef America; Man v. Food; Selling New York and Selling LA; Throwdown With Bobby Flay; Chopped; Ghost Adventures; and Yard Crashers, among other popular shows across the networks. Many of the popular lifestyle programs from Scripps will also be available for purchase and download from Amazon Instant Video.
“The Scripps family of networks – including HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel and Travel Channel – airs some of the highest-quality and most popular unscripted lifestyle programming on TV today,” said Brad Beale, Director of Digital Video Content Acquisition for Amazon. “We are excited to be the exclusive online-only subscription home for Scripps content and know our customers are going to love getting these great shows as part of Prime.”
Great news about Scripps content getting on there. However, not much has been posted yet. I think I saw Bizarre Foods America and Hotel Impossible.

Yeah I noticed they have 3 seasons of No Reservations up. 4-6.
I would love it if they added Food Network Star as well. I missed the last couple of episodes of last season and there is nowhere to watch it legally.
The Good Wife is coming to Amazon Prime tomorrow. The first 3 seasons will be available.
If you haven't seen the show and are curious to check it out, I highly recommend it. One of the best written and acted dramas on TV. Plus, it's a serialized drama.
