Home Theater Setup: HDTV, PS3, Receiver
Okay, just got the new TV delivered today. Much bigger in the house than compared to the store. I wasn't sure if my wife was going to faint or just kill me. I plan to run HDMI staight from the PS3 to the TV, then TV to a Yamaha HD Receiver. I have some questions though. I still very much enjoy listening to CD's, but my old CD player is on its last legs. I love the streamlined look of just using the PS3 for my media. Can I use the PS3 as my audio CD player and just run it 'through' the TV to the receiver? Would it make more sense to have a dedicated CD player? Thanks!

Run HDMI to receiver, then out from receiver to tv. Especially if you want surround sound from dvds and blu ray movies. 99.9% of tvs will downmix the 5.1 signal to 2.0 to send to receiver. Then the best you can hope for is simulated surround (Dolby Pro Logic II). I don't understand why everyone wants to run through the tv first! It just doesn't make sense. They can start putting speaker connections on the tvs, and quit making surround receivers! The receiver is the hub of the system, not the tv.........
Yes, you can play your cds in the ps3.

I was the same way. Wanted to plug everything into my TV then just run the audio to my receiver.
But I took everyone's advice and tried using my receiver as a hub. I've got all my junk plugged into the receiver and just run a single HDMI wire from my receiver to my TV. This works so much better.

Yes, for a simple home theater set up, run everything through your receiver. Assuming it is a newer receiver, you will get lossless audio.
And yes, your PS3 can play CD's and will work well. Your PS3 can also store some music on its HD.

Re: Home Theater Setup: HDTV, PS3, Receiver
My only concern with this is my wife NEVER likes to use the receiver unless we're watching a movie. I'm pretty much the only one the cares about the 5.1 setup (along with my son, of course). If my wife wants to watch a movie, will she need to turn on the receiver every time in order to pass the HDMI signal on to the TV? Also, how will this impact the 3d capability as both my PS3 and TV are 3D compatible, but the receiver is not?
