It's been FOREVER since I played a 64, but just picked one up at a pawn shop for $30. I want to try some new games and rediscover some old faves - the three "must buys" for me are Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, and Blastcorps.
I thought the best games on that system were 3D platformers, like Mario 64, the Banjo games, and Donkey Kong 64. Rogue Squadron was good, but I thought it was too ambitious for the system (limited draw distance was a problem). As for Goldeneye, I didn't get to play it until 2001 or so and I didn't get why it was a big deal.
Get an expansion pack, as some games require it. Some games like Rogue Squadron used it to allow high resolution (for an N64 - we're talking 640x480, maybe). But, I found that they would run more smoothly with the pack installed but with the game set to low resolution.

Goldeneye was a big deal in 1997...if you played things between then and 2001 then it will definitely have limited appeal, but back then the multiplayer was THE shit. Main game was also pretty awesome.
Other games:
Diddy Kong Racing - an adventure game and a racer...very good.
Mario Kart - battle mode is still fun
Turok and Turok 2 like someone mentioned earlier are fun.
1080 Snowboarding
Snowboard Kids
Banjo Kazooie
Bomberman 64
Extreme-G - very underrated racing game, it might be better than F-Zero X
Star Fox
Pokemon Snap - yeah this was actually quite fun.
Yoshi's Story
There are more for sure...

You should use it to attempt to build one of these:
I miss N64. (I do have both Banjo Kazooies on XBLA)

Mario Tennis 64 is the greatest tennis videogame of all time. The play mechanics are perfectly balanced between the characters with a variety of different styles. A four-player doubles match is incredibly fun among evenly-matched competitors. The game offers players of all skill levels an enjoyable challenge.

That's actually pretty cool. I'd never try it on my own for fear of messing something up but still.
The Nintendo 64 was a great system though. The last good Nintendo system for me and possibly one of my favorite consoles ever to be honest. I mostly liked a lot of the popular titles mentioned in here but it was a fun system. Favorites include: Super Mario 64 (possibly my favorite Mario game), Mario Kart 64, Star Wars Episode I Racer, 007 Goldeneye, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, WWF No Mercy, Star Fox 64.

Virtual Pro Wrestling 2. Better than no mercy in my opinion with it's secondary finishers and no lag during tag matches.
I came in to post the same thing. It is the best wrestling game of all time, complete with ultimate fighting bouts as well, so it's almost like two games in one. Look past the blocky graphics, and swim in the awesome gameplay, and you'll be hooked.
I would also add Rush 64 to the list. Me and my cousin were flat out hooked on doing the stunt mode over and over, trying to top our scores.
Dont forget the mico machines game for the N64. Really makes me want to find where I stored my N64 and take it out for a bit.

Basically if it was published by Rare or Nintendo, buy it. That's all this thread is anyway.
Then sprinkle in some Rogue Squadron, Turok, some Shadows of the Empire, SW: Pod Racer, & even toss in some WCW/NWO.

Super Tennis on the SNES is better. :D

No Mercy was fun, I liked Wrestlemania 2000 though too. WCW/nWo Revenge was pretty fun too. I remember being all excited for WCW Mayhem when it was coming out and when I finally got it being somewhat disappointed in it

Just watch out when purchasing the games. Alot of the cartridge batteries will be going bad in the near future. You might wanna hit up a radioshack to get some replacements.

And my personal favorites on the system:
Wayne Gretzkys 3D Hockey - Basically the hockey equivalent of NBA Jam
Turok 2 - Kill the monkey multiplayer is still on of my favorites
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time - One of the best games, ever.
Mario Kart 64 - The best iteration of the best kart racer ever.
Starfox 64 - Best on-rails shooter ever.
Beetle Adventure Racing - Probably the most under-appreciated game for the system.
Superman 64 - JK :)

No Mercy is the best in my opinion. It takes the excellent fighting engine of Revenge, expands on it slightly in mostly awesome ways, and adds the ability to create your own wrestler.
