The review system can't 'talk' to the forum anymore, so those can't be autogenerated the way they used to be.

It's a shame that a forum upgrade(?) killed one of the main functions of the DVDTalk Reviews mechanism. Any way that can be remedied? -kd5-

When did the threads stop being generated?
Is there an existing tech request on this issue, or is this it?

Also can you tell me in detail what these threads were, when and how they were generated, etc? I never used them and I need to explain to tech

Here is one of the threads. They were auto-generated and a daily fixture here for years.
Can't answer the other questions.

Re: Whatever happened to the "DVDTalk Reviews for (insert date here)" threads?
I have to admit that it's actually pretty straightforward.
The problem was that the MySQL credentials the review system uses can't communicate with the forum anymore. I don't have MySQL credentials for the forum, so there wasn't really anything I could do. The script that does that posting needed to be able to 'talk' to the forum DB. Just needed the login info and a few minutes to change some code around, but I wasn't able to get that information to do the work myself.
Someone at IB did do that, but he/she didn't put any sort of process in place to automate the script. No automatin' means no postin'. I went ahead and took care of that that. You should see today's post there now, and it'll show up shortly after midnight PST every morning from now on.
Also, the IB script must've been based on the very first version of this I did because it wasn't pulling in Blu-ray reviews, and that's been part of the template since 2006. I just made some modifications to pull those in too.
The review system I wrote is super-old and creaky by this point (it turned ten in January or February), and the codebase doesn't reflect the fact that I'm pretty talented at that sort of thing these days. I do know it backwards and forwards if IB needs/wants me to do anything with it, and I'll totally do whatever needs to be done for free. I just want it to be good.

I think the one thing that I miss is that at the bottom of each review (where it still says What Do You Think?) there used to be mechanism in place which would link you to the Reviews forum where you could either start a new thread expressing your thoughts about said review, or add your thoughts to an existing thread in the Reviews forum. What ever happened to that mechanism? -kd5-

It disappeared for the same reason the daily updates did, but I think that's for the best. The Facebook commenting system is getting a lot more use.

Re: Whatever happened to the "DVDTalk Reviews for (insert date here)" threads?
I realize that some time has passed since I last commented about this, but in answer to Adam I'd just like to ask: Where is the link, anywhere in the Review or Reviews or Review Forum that a person can click on to take them to the Reviews commentaries for that Review, at Facebook? While I realize I should just be able to go to Facebook and do a search for DVDTalk, I'd rather be able to click a link at the end of any Review here (where it still says What Do You Think?), that would take me to a commentaries page, for that Review, at Facebook (since we're not linking to the Reviews Forum here anymore). Any way to link to the reviews at Facebook? Or if they already exist, can you point me to them? Thanks, -kd5-

OK, this is weird. I just installed the latest stable version of Firefox a few days ago, been using it as my default browser. Looked at a review for Zombie Undead just now, at the bottom of the review there's a Facebook mechanism to add a comment for the review. Looked at another review, yes, there's the Facebook comment mechanism.
Brought up IE8 (I'm on XP SP3), no Facebook mechanism at the end of the review, just the bolded What Do You Think? and below that a pic with a link to buy it at Amazon.
So the Facebook comment mechanism works with Firefox but not with Internet Explorer 8? No wonder I wasn't aware it existed until now. -kd5-

It'll work with Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and...I think I checked IE 9. I don't have IE 8 at home.
Apparently there are some extra hoops I need to jump through to get it to work in IE 8. I can't make that change from work, but I'll try to remember to do that when I get home tonight.

Does it seem to be working now?

Sorry it took so long to respond. No, it's still not working with IE8. I looked at 7 or 8 reviews with IE8 and below the What Do You Think? there's either the pic/link to buy it at Amazon, or a link to find the lowest price, but no mechanism to offer comments. Works fine w/ FF. -kd5-
