Weekend Box Office (2/17 - 2/20): This Means War on McG's Career
Waaaaah-waaaaah.
As it looks right now:
1. Ghost Rider
2. Safe House
3. The Vow
4. This Means War
5. Journey 2
How it'll most likely look come Monday:
1. Safe House
2. The Vow
3. Ghost Rider
4. Journey 2
5. This Means War
So, um, how much did Fox spend on This Means War again? Can McG finally get kicked out of Hollywood?

Still no concrete numbers out yet, but remember last weekend's box office.
The Vow had a 9% increase from Friday-to-Saturday.
Safe House had a 19% increase from Friday-to-Saturday.
Journey 2 had a 94% (!) increase from Friday-to-Saturday.
We could see a similar play out this weekend with Ghost Rider being the film with a strong Friday, but a weaker Saturday when the fanboys disperse. This Means War needs to have both a strong Friday and Saturday or it'll be easily eclipsed by Journey 2.

This has been an usually strong Feb, I won't be shocked if Journey 2 ends up at #2 for the weekend.
1. The Vow (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 2 [2,958 Theaters]
Est Friday $7.1M (-53%), Est 4-Day Holiday $29M, Est Cume $90M
1. Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance 3D (Sony) NEW [3,174 Theaters]
Est Friday $7M, Est 4-day Holiday $25M
3. Safe House (Universal) Week 3 [3,121 Theaters]
Est Friday $6.5M (-52%), Est 4-Day Holiday $26M, Est Cume $80M
4. This Means War (Fox) NEW [3,189 Theaters]
Est Friday $5.1M, Est 4-Day Holiday $18M
5. Journey 2 3D (Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,500 Theaters]
Est Friday $4.4M (-33%), Est 4-Day Holiday $26M, Est Cume $59M
6. Chronicle (Fox) Week 3 [2,556 Theaters]
Est Friday $2M, Est 4-Day Holiday $10M, Est Cume $53.5M
7. Woman In Black (CBS Films) Week 3 [2,559 Theaters]
Est Friday $2M, Est 4-Day Holiday $8M, Est Cume $46.6M
8. Star Wars 3D (Luscafilms/Fox) Week 2 [2,655 Theaters]
Est Friday $1.9M (-78%), Est 4-Day Holiday $10M, Est Cume $35.9M
9. Secret World Of Arrietty (Studio Ghibli/Disney) NEW [1,522 Theaters]
Est Friday $1.5M, Est 4-Day Holiday $8M
10. The Grey (Open Road) Week 4 [2,107 Theaters]
Est Friday $800K, Est 4-Day Holiday $3.7M, Est Cume $48.6
While $8m isn't great by any means, the highest grossing release by Disney of a Ghibli movie has been Ponyo at around $15m domestic.

Re: Weekend Box Office (2/17 - 2/20): This Means War on McG's Career
Looking at the estimates e-mailed companywide this morning, looks like The Vow, [b]Safe House[b] and Journey 2 hold the 1, 2 and 3 spots while Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and This Means War debut in 4 and 5. The Secret World of Arrietty, predictably, is further down the countdown, debuting at 8. The top 4 all have over $20M in takings, so a good weekend overall, if not as good as expected.

I wish these movies were more popular. It's nice that they are getting a wider release in this country so a lot of us can see 'em on the big screen.

Which is why it opened where it did. Short of incredible WOM and fantastic reviews, there's no way the sequel could open anywhere near the original. In fact, if you adjust for ticket inflation, the original had a nearly $60 million 4-day weekend.

These next few weeks are going to be rough. Not a single thing opening I have interest in aside from Wanderlust.

Unless, the biscuitheads who buy tickets to these movies are just looking for a cozy place to text for 90 minutes?

Re: Weekend Box Office (2/17 - 2/20): This Means War on McG's Career
I never saw the original Ghost Rider even though someone gave me the DVD. I suppose I could pull it out for the action challenge but I have so many higher priorities.
You'd think animated kids' fare would do better, but I guess people think they "look foreign." I'd guess that renaming it "The Borrowers" would have helped a little.
My kids eat up anything Ghibli so I'm sure we'll be seeing this soon.

This means WAr looked like shit so it's always a pleasure of mine to watch Reese Witherspoon underperform. She is one of my most hated actors in film history. ANd Ghost Rider was horrendously embarrassing so I am not surprised this is underperfoming also. The fact that this did over $20 million should make them happy. Still , it probably wont be a failure and may be looked at as a slight hit if it can clean up overseas.
And also I gotta give this thread title a grade of F. That's seriously the best you could come up with?
