Spartacus: Vengeance -- Season Premiere -- "Fugitivus" -- 1/27/12

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Spartacus discovers the grave responsibilities and costs involved in his new role as a leader of freed slaves. Claudius Glaber’s arrival in Capua forces Spartacus to keep his rebellious band intact.

10 episode 2nd season. Apparently the budget for season 2 was increased, so they had to cut the episode order.

Thought I would start this a day early since it's a pretty big premiere tomorrow. I know it was released early and some of you probably saw it already.

Liam McIntyre is the new Spartacus.

RIP Andy Whitfield

In case you didn't know, Starz already renewed this for a 3rd season. I follow Steven DeKnight's Twitter feed and he said that he already finished the script for the 3rd season premiere.

DeKnight also said the plan is for this show to run at least 5 seasons, but that depends on Starz obviously and also other projects he may get offered.

It's a good first episode, but Andy is sorely missed. It's going to take me awhile to get used to the new guy. This show is also going to miss John Hannah.

BTW, the new guy seems like a pretty cool guy: http://tv.ign.com/articles/121/1217215p2.html

I really enjoyed Spartacus with Andy Whitfield, but I don't think that I'll be watching this one. Not out of any dislike towards the new guy, just because I think that it's going to be more of the same. Great ending last season though.

Are the writers the same? The dialogue seemed a bit stilted rather than its usual flow. As to the story, I don't know it's going to be as interesting but I'll keep watching until I don't.

I share alot of the same feelings, I'm not sure I can adjust to a new guy playing Spartacus.

You mean more gratuitous sex and nudity and insane gladiator fights with lots of blood? Yeah sure man, I'll pass on that.

Can't wait for tonight. I'll miss Andy, but I'm game to see Liam's interpretation of the character.

Same writers/producers etc. Steven DeKnight is still the head writer and showrunner.

They need to establish another Batiatusesque character, someone equally likeable AND despised. The premeire is missing that.

Re: Spartacus: Vengeance -- Season Premiere -- "Fugitivus" -- 1/27/12

Liam's performance was fine, but took a bit of an adjustment for me. My only gripe was I wish they did a really good "previously on" because I struggled with placing many of the Romans and trying to figure out if we saw them before.

The cgi blood was really distracting in this episode, which was odd because it never bothered me before. all-in-all, solid start.

I don't think they could do a comprehensive recap from Blood and Sand because of Andy Whitfield.

Re: Spartacus: Vengeance -- Season Premiere -- "Fugitivus" -- 1/27/12

Really awesome start

I thought Liam was fine as the new Spartacus. He definitely has the look. The only really glaring difference to me was that Andy had alot more bass to his voice, which added to his presence as the character.

Awesome scene at the Whore house. That was a sick massacre scene. at Spartacus slicing fatso through the throat while he was jerking off.

Doctore was badass too they way he took out all those guys. The compound fracture, yanking the eye out, and then yanking the intenstines out. They really upped the blood.

Who wants to bet that Spartacus is:

Spoiler:
The father of Ilithya's baby? It seemed pretty glaring after she was staring at her stomach and recalling the scene where they had sex in season 1.

at Ilithya freaking out when Lucretia came back

Looking forward to the next 9 weeks. The preview at the end made it look like an insane season ahead. Sorry for those who are Starz-less.

Great start to the season and I thought Liam was really good.

On the other hand why oh why did Viva Bianca have to loose so much weight? That was one unfortunate looking cleavage

I like her alot and I think she's hot and plays the bitch part so well. But, yeah she could use a little more meat on her bones.

I'm going to stand by my prediction about her character from my OP.

A little surprised that more people here haven't chimed in. I'm guessing that many of you don't subscribe to Starz.

Anwyays, some good ratings news:

Focusing specifically on Friday night performance, "Spartacus: Vengeance" produced a record total of 2.1 million viewers (1.39M viewers for Friday at 10PM (et/pt) and 677K for the 11PM (et/pt) repeat, which was a 10% increase over the "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" prequel Friday night premiere (1.9 million viewers combined for Friday premiere 10PM and 11PM repeat).

Like some others here, I thought it was just okay. Good action sequences, and the gratuitous nudity is always a plus, but seems like it's missing the intensity that season 1 had. Not sure if it was the dialogue or if it's the new Spartacus, but it just feels different.

I'll keep watching though

Oops, I guess I'm one of those.

I thought the premiere was great. Liam literally hit the ground running; really cool opening fight scene.

at Ilithyia's reaction to seeing Lucretia. I also loved Spartacus going after Glaber, and Crixus having his back. Seeing Aurelia all beat up was pretty brutal, as were her final words to Spartacus.

Add in a topless Lucy Lawless, Doctore being a badass, a whorehouse bloodbath, disembowelment & some faux-Shakespearean dialogue? That's quality TV, folks.

Re: Spartacus: Vengeance -- Season Premiere -- "Fugitivus" -- 1/27/12

Finally caught up! Here are my thoughts:

Episode started off slow with too many new characters I'd never seen or heard of before. Also, with all the names being thrown out I was getting confused (this is my fault though - I really need to go back and watch the first season again).

Liam was ok and really young in the role, but i understand it will be hard to take over a role that another actor had established so firmly. It'll take some time to get used to him but i think he'll do fine (but he really needs to do some P90x and get beefed up a bit)

This episode really kicked into gear after the bathhouse. Lucy Lawless should be interesting in terms of how here character evolves. I'm excited to see which old characters will begin popping up in future episodes. Overall I enjoyed it, but am hoping for more.

Yeah, there really weren't THAT many new characters, all things considered. There's the noble living in Capua who sent the mercenaries after Spartacus and his sister. There's also that other senator we saw yelling at Glaber (although we might have seen him before.. can't remember).

Otherwise I can't recall any new characters showing up.
