New England Patriots vs. New York Giants
February 5, 2012
Lucas Oil Stadium (Indanapolis, Indiana)

NBC (and NBCSports.com for Internet users with US-based IP addresses)
6:00 pm ET/3:00 pm PT

Starting odds: New England (-3), over-under 55 points

Alas, given that the Giants actually have a balanced team (AND playing "on a roll,") I'm favoring the Giants winning 24-21 in a close-fought game.

Brady and Belichick looked a little tentative and out of their element (the old cliche' of playing not to lose instead of playing to win). Couple that with the fact that they'll be playing a good QB and, more importantly, a coach that trusts his QB, I think the Giants win with Eli putting up a lot of passing yards. Pats need to hold onto those INTs this time around if they want to win.

I agree with the above comment. Brady did not look very sharp yesterday and played like it was his first playoff game.

I'm not fan of either team so I don't really care who wins. I hope the commercials are good ;)

ESPN poll has the country at 50/50 for who is going to win. It's pretty consistent except for NY, NJ and New England (save for Connecticut, lots of NY commuters, or is there a Mass/Conn rivalry?).

Goat3001

I think the Giants are underdogs. I'm betting heavily on them. The Pats have been unimpressive in their 3 games against good teams (scoring 17,20 and 23 points). The Giants already beat them this year in Foxsboro. I'm just not buying into the Patriots this year. They're a 10 win team if they had any stiff competition while I think the Giants are a 13 win team if they played the way they're playing now all season.

So you're saying CT is skewed one way or the other? Generally there is a line in CT where the NY-BOS rivalry switches sides. The west side of CT roots for NY teams, while the east side of CT roots for Boston teams. So I'd expect CT to be split 50/50 on the SB.

I wonder if any part of CT is rooting for the Hartford Whalers to come back?

starman9000
01-23-12, 12:38 PM
Yeah, CT was pretty much 50/50, whereas the rest of NE was like 80/20 Pats and NY/NJ was 70/30 giants. Was just curious as to the sports allegiances there.

Since the Patriots are the AFC Champions they will be using the practice facility at the Colts Complex (http://indiana.sbnation.com/indianapolis-colts/2012/1/22/2726254/new-england-patriots-super-bowl-xlvi-at-indianapolis-colts-complex) and the Giants will be using the new facility at the University of Indianapolis (http://www.wthr.com/story/16566901/university-of-indianapolis-ready-to-host-nfc-super-bowl-contender).

It's not often that Brady has two bad games in a row. Now he gets two weeks to prepare...may be trouble for the Giants.

Pulling for the Pats just because of the Michigan aspect of it, but I would LOVE to see Eli one up Peyton. That would be glorious.

Checking the local Indy paper, it seems the main issue with this SB won't be the weather, but rather the cab situation. 150,000 visitors, 700 cabs (http://www.indystar.com/article/20120122/NEWS11/201220338/Crunch-em-150-000-Super-Bowl-visitors-700-cabs). Good luck, folks!

So the writers with nothing better to do for a week will have a hard time flagging down cabs? Works for me. I would imagine fans aren't going to spend more than a day or 2 in that city in February. They'll get in and get out.

So if the Giants played as good as they are right now they would win more and if the Pats played better competition they would likely have less wins?!? Hey I'm a Pats fan and have to agree with this logic :)

I would guess the Pats are favorites because the Giants were 7-7 at one point and nobody should lose the Redskins under any circumstances - although the Pats almost did too ha

I put this as a pick-em game and could see it going either way.

In 2007, I was in a sports bar in Cleveland watching the SB with coworkers. I was half drunk and tired of the Pats, so I cheered for the Giants. Since I'm going to be home and sober this time, no way this is going to happen again.

This is about as unexciting a Super Bowl matchup as I can remember. At least four years ago I knew that the Giants had a great chance of knocking off the Patriots since they almost did it in the regular season.

This year, since New England isn't undefeated, I just don't care all that much.

Yeah, I'd like to see Belichick and Brady have it handed to them again so that they can pout instead of being smug. But I hate seeing Eli get rewarded for being an arrogant prick around draft time.

So I was thinking... the 49ers were the first to 5 SB's...then the Cowboys got 5. Then the Steelers got 5 and 6, now the Giants have a chance for number 5?

Is that right or am I missing a fiver team?

Decker

The Super Bowl has traditionally become a game to be played in the warm weather. The game is almost secondary to the atmosphere and warm weather has traditionally been part of the atmosphere.

I agree that the SB should rotate all over the country, but the NFL wants a big party and having the event in 2 feet of snow is not as much fun for the NFL I guess.

nickdawgy

Okay, I remember hearing they're 4-0 (now 5-0) in NFC Championship games and I guess I thought they had won every SB they've been to, a la the 49ers, who are 5-0 in the SB.

Not really. The Steelers beat the Cowboys twice in two of the greatest Super Bowls of all time (and if not for Jackie Smith they would likely have split those two games). The Cowboys beat the Dolphins a year before the Dolphins had their perfect season. The Bills were not exactly chopped liver, they just went up against three teams that were better than they were. If not for a missed FG they beat the Giants.

The 49ers barely beat the Bengals one year.

Your theory doesn't exactly hold up.

A few comments for today:

1. I think the taxicab situation at the Super Bowl this year is not so bad, with one good reason: all the major parties are going to held very close to each other, so you could actually walk between party sites.

2. Now that there are reports that Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has a high-ankle sprain (we all know how that hobbled Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger), I may have to change my prediction and now the Giants will win 30-20--if the Patriots can even get 20 points! -rolleyes-

3. I really wonder is one Michelle Denise Beadle trying to "gin up trouble" with her campaign against the Patriots using the #PeopleAgainstThePats Twitter hashtag. G** help her just in case the Patriots actually wins the game....

The parity that should be happening gets somewhat negated when you have rules changes which encourage scoring more and benefit teams with the BEST QB's. A healthy Rodgers Brady,Brees,Manning,Rapesberger=at least 10 wins a year no matter how many weaknesses you have in every part of your team.

The matchup this year doesn't do much for me.

This year I've gotten a big hate on for the Giants, so I'm rooting for the Patriots. I have nothing against the Patriots, but seeing the city of Boston win yet another championship is annoying - so there's at least a bit of consolation if they lose.

I have to give the edge to the Giants though - especially if Gronk isn't 100%.

The only hope the Patriots have is if they really start to utilize their WRs outside of Welker. Even with their flaws, either Ocho or Branch (or both) could be used to surprise the defense - as the Giants will likely concentrate more on the two TEs and Welker.

In short, I think the Giants will win because you know they'll establish a running game to "eat the clock" and keep Brady off the field as much as possible. Giants 30, Patriots 20 is my current guess.

No, not over the edge. I think the whole go for his head thing put me over the edge. But yeah, I am tired of people saying Eli is all that (he's good, yes) and the Giants are a dynasty or will be, or they knew they'd win the game, and they proved it, etc, etc.

Raven's gloating or pictures is one reason I look forward to prime time Cowboy games every season. And I hate the Cowboys.

I like those as well.

Because his team was the one that lost.

Giants had the worst rushing offense in the league during the season.

That was true during the middle of the season when the Giants looked like a walking MASH ward, but now that both Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs are reasonably healthy, the Giants can establish a running game to "eat the clock" and keep the Patriots' offense off the field. And with a healthy running game, that makes Eli Manning's passing even more effective. :)

Arpeggi
01-29-12, 11:24 PM
In short, I think the Giants will win because you know they'll establish a running game to "eat the clock" and keep Brady off the field as much as possible. Giants 30, Patriots 20 is my current guess.

Who the fuck is gonna run for the Giants? Ahmad Bradshaw is garbage.

Giants might win, but it won't be this way. Pats run defense is pretty good.
I expect the Giants to "try" the run in the beginning. After they have like 4 consecutive runs for losses, they throw their hands up and say, "Ok Eli, do your thing. It's been our offense for the rest of the year, so what the fuck."
Who the fuck is gonna run for the Giants? Ahmad Bradshaw is garbage.
Jacobs goes down like a sack of potatoes with a strong breeze, but Bradshaw at least tries to make a cutback. If you focus on the Giants O line, you'll realize how incredibly poor run blockers they are. They regularly let free runners into the backfield and miss block assignments. Giants RB can't do a hell of a lot when they are hit in the backfield before they even begin to try to make a cut. Their RB are no great shakes, but the big difference between the 2011 Giants running game and previous years is the O line. Strange too because I always heard O linemen preferred to run block rather than pass block.

I was very upset. For a good day or so. Probably get a bit more upset when the SB starts and I realize the 49ers could have been in it.

But the Giants didn't cheat, they won fair and square. Two of their players might be tools for going for the head of another player, but there's so many things that could have happened if Williams never fumbled, it's not even worth it.

Besides, if their run defense had done it's job after the fumble, it might have been a longer FG try anyway, but they went to sleep, probably demoralized after the play.

So yeah.

But I know I said I'd root against the Giants, but how can I root for the Patriots? I think I'll just root for a good game. If it's anything like the last time these two clubs met, that's fine with me.

It is clear, so far, that Manning hasn’t taken anything too seriously. Since he has been in Indianapolis, Manning has covered Victor Cruz’s towel in soap and encouraged uninitiated Giants to “load up on the cocktail sauce’’ while eating the famous sinus-clearing shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo’s Steak House on Monday night.

“Some people started sweating, kind of half-choking,’’ Manning reported. “No major injuries.’’http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2012/02/01/eli_manning_relaxed_in_control_in_indy/

I have had the dijon horseradish sauce at the Rathskeller and that stuff is rough even in small doses -- I can only imagine how they suffered with the cocktail sauce at St. Elmo's.

Obstructed View Seats at Lucas Oil Stadium

In case anyone you know is attending the Super Bowl, be advised that there are hundreds of seats that suffer from this....

http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/9060/lucasoil.jpg

I know that the following sections have obstructed view seats - 404, 408, 422, 433, 635, 637, 639, 644, 645 - there may be others. Not EVERY seat in these sections will be obstructed, obviously, but that there are any at all is a shame.

Update: Here's a list of the obstructed view seats - from a ticket broker in NY no less - I started counting and got to 100 before I got out of the first column. My guess is 250-350 seats fall into this category. http://thenygiantstickets.com/2012/01/obstructed-view-seats-super-bowl-lucas-oil-stadium-complete-list

Why trashy? You mean poor man's?

Running joke all season after arpgeggi kept insisting in the fantasy thread that Bradshaw is "trash"

Jeez, that penalty sure helped the Giants. They should just play with 12 on the field!

DL was big down the stretch. Patriots couldn't seem to get any pressure and NYG could.

I just wish that other teams could figure out how to do it consistently so we wouldn't have to hear from the insufferable fans anymore. I just posted this on my fb page as I thought it up when that sack occurred during the last drive.

Bye, bye little Patriot guy.
The Giants drove you to the ground so now you can cry.
The city of NY will now surely fly as they watched Brady's hope fade and die.

I didn't watch it, but you have to admit, not only did the Giants prove they weren't a fluke team, Eli showed some balls with that last drive.

Check the hospitals for alcohol poisoning patients....I think I see raven showing up.

Congrats and thank you Giants for knocking off the Pats yet again!

The game was dull as dirt until the end, but the end made it all worthwhile.

Carlos Condit wins? Check.
Miami beats Duke? Check.
Pats lose the Super Bowl? Check.

Perfect sports weekend.

I saw this on another board and have to agree, seeing the Pats lose in the post-season just never gets old.

Patriots should have had more receivers in the Hail Mary area--replay only showed three against five or so Giants

I thought that too but the replay also showed that it was a tip drill. The pats guy was trying to tap it towards the front of the end zone were the other Pats were waiting.

Congrats to the Giants. Have to say I never would have predicted this in the preseason.

Pretty dull game rescued by the finish. Patriots just missed on a number of plays that could have changed things: The offsides on 3rd and 7, the Brady bomb-INT, the Welker near-miss, etc.

Congrats to the Giants, a much deserved win there. Patriots made some fatal errors the whole 4th quarter. Painful to watch.

This one definitely stung less than '07 though, because I definitely didn't expect the Pats to make the Superbowl this year.
