Eli Manning with the ball in OT? Not feeling confident.

What happens if the Giants don't score then the 49ers get a FG, is that it?

Yep

Yes, I believe that was my point.

Now...lets rock.

Whoops my bad...took me a minute to translate...too many beers on a Sunday night. Didn't think I would still be watching football almost 4 hours after kickoff.

Decker
01-22-12, 10:14 PM
Old news : Kickoffs have sucked this year since they changed the rules.

wmansir
01-22-12, 10:14 PM
Love Hochuli explaining it. rotfl
Christ, I was half expecting him to start passing out rule books.

HistoryProf
01-22-12, 10:14 PM
not gonna tackle a fullback with your shoulder

Lt Ripley
01-22-12, 10:15 PM
Wow, WTF was that call?

nickdawgy
01-22-12, 10:15 PM
Damn, good play there, but almost an INT.

Drav3n
01-22-12, 10:15 PM
Fuck! Rogers should've had that pick!

Red Dog
01-22-12, 10:15 PM
My guess on SB odds:

If NYG wins, Pats -4.
If SF wins, Pats -6.

nickdawgy
01-22-12, 10:16 PM
Whew, I dunno if I can take much more.

HistoryProf
01-22-12, 10:17 PM
i gotta sneaking suspicion an Alex Smith boo boo is going to end this game.

Christ, I was half expecting him to start passing out rule books.

You never know when you might have another McNabb in the group, better to just be clear in case.

01-22-12, 10:18 PM
So if the 49ers don't score here, it resets to Giants get a chance then 49ers get a chance?

Red Dog
01-22-12, 10:18 PM
 at how the new OT rule has fizzled. For petes sake, just make it sudden death.

nickdawgy
01-22-12, 10:19 PM
This playcalling is just garbage. My goodness.

How many chances are they going to give Manning?

Decker
01-22-12, 10:20 PM
My guess on SB odds:

If NYG wins, Pats -4.
If SF wins, Pats -6.

What are the odds of the Niners and Giants still playing this game in two weeks from now?

Red Dog
01-22-12, 10:21 PM
The college fans in here must have expected 8 TDs by now starting from the 25. ;)

Red Dog
01-22-12, 10:22 PM
What are the odds of the Niners and Giants still playing this game in two weeks from now?

I'll give you the Danny Sheridan special....1 Billion to 1.

jfoobar
01-22-12, 10:22 PM
I'm watching this on standard def and Fox cuts to commercial during a play. Twice.

Now 4 times here, all of them Comcast commercials. Watching in HD.

I'll give you the Danny Sheridan special....1 Billion to 1.

01-22-12, 10:23 PM
So if the Giants get a FG here, the 49ers have a chance to go three and out? I mean match it?

Red Dog
01-22-12, 10:23 PM
What? Commercials? That's a first I've seen before the 2 minute warning for OT. Leave it to the NFL. rotfl

Autotelik
01-22-12, 10:24 PM
So if the 49ers don't score here, it resets to Giants get a chance then 49ers get a chance?

I think it is sudden death al the way after the first possession ends... Meaning if NY scores it is over

Lt Ripley
01-22-12, 10:24 PM
So if the 49ers don't score here, it resets to Giants get a chance then 49ers get a chance?

No, I think from here it is the first to score. I think.

Red Dog
01-22-12, 10:24 PM
So if the Giants get a FG here, the 49ers have a chance to go three and out? I mean match it?

I guess Ed Hochuli didn't explain it well enough for you. In a word, no.

Red Dog
01-22-12, 10:25 PM
Now this game is ineptitude. All this game needs is Billy Cundiff.

nickdawgy
01-22-12, 10:25 PM
Give them free yards, nice.

HistoryProf
01-22-12, 10:26 PM
Why do they keep trying to go deep? 2nd and 3 there's no reason to do that. get the dang first down.

jfoobar
01-22-12, 10:26 PM
Let's face it, SF deserves to lose this game for their offense.

Red Dog
01-22-12, 10:26 PM

Yeah, you do that. I got a billion that says you don't like the smoke. ;)

That numb nutz is the reason they lose. 2 fucked up punts.

Cory02
01-22-12, 10:28 PM
The Giants need to try for the FG on first down. Otherwise I have a bad feeling it'll be Eli taking 3 sacks and getting pushed out of FG range then it turns into a hockey game with multiple OTs.

01-22-12, 10:28 PM
That's completely the return man's fault, very sloppy ball protection.

NYG pk 2nd half (incl OT) pushes. Meh. Almost got +1/2 but got locked out.

They don't care. The rights are sold. The commercial time is sold. The only person maybe dancing a jig is whovever the producer is of the crappy post-SB program that might be on. That's what I tell people in that NFL TV forum. The SB is ratings-proof and unlike the other leagues isn't dependent on the almighty NY, thank god.

Mr. Cinema
01-22-12, 10:44 PM
I can't complain too much. As a Niners fan, I and others have had to endure several lackluster seasons with JT O'Sullivan, Shaun Hill, Tim Rattay and others. No one thought they'd do anything this year and they go 14-4 and come up just short of the Super Bowl.

Next year will be even more difficult because they will have a much tougher schedule. Alex Smith didn't look great in this game, but has probably played his way to a short contract extension.

Good riddance to the bandwagon fans who can only focus on that.

The fact that in 60+ minutes of regulation + OT, the Niners can only muster up 17 points?

1/13 on Third Down Conversions?

The fact that they had too many opportunities to put the Giants away but failed to do that?

I agree. As I mentioned earlier, both teams had too many opportunities to put the other to sleep but neither wanted (or could) capitalize. You knew it was going to come back and bite one of them in the face.

Niners fans don't see any of that. You know I've been watching their games since I moved out here and the fans were nowhere during the medicore/poor seasons. In fact they weren't really anywhere this season until a few weeks ago. All claiming to be life-long fans.

It's true! The same happened during the World Series SF Giants team.

I really don't mind bandwagon fans, as long as they don't say anything stupid. Then again it's impossible for bandwagon fans to watch and understand why their team lost. Let's just blame it on the most dramatic thing possible!

Well, my least desirable Super Bowl matchup has come to pass. I hate the Patriots with a passion (they are the team that's always there, seeing the same team in the mix all the time gets old), and I hate Eli Manning (the arrogant putz thought he was too good for San Diego), so there are two teams that I would like to see lose matching up against each other.

I guess I'd like to see the Patriots lose more than I'd like to see the Giants lose, but this is still a craptacular Super Bowl matchup for me.

Congrats to everyone in Boston and New York. You get yet another shot at a title. Enjoy it.

Does telling someone that you hope they die qualify as a death threat? I dont think so. Either way people are being assholes to Kyle Williams on Twitter.

Enjoy it.

Well, at least Rex Ryan is in misery. That has to be somewhat comforting.

I think Super Bowl XLVI is going to be another of those "slug it out," hard-fought games like the Conference Championship games we saw today.

Right now, I see it Giants 24, Patriots 21, with the Giants winning it on a FG with under two minutes to play. For the Giants to win, they'll need Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs to really run a lot and "eat the clock" in a big, big way.

Actually I was a 49ners fan first and when they tried to three-peat, the Giants beat them and I hated the Giants lol but then earned my respect for being a strong team stopping the 49ners.

3 teams I root for:

49ners
Giants
Eagles

Hahaha. sorry.

What a day of football. As much of a goat as Kyle Williams is, both teams had the ball at the end of the fourth, and during ot. Alex Smith looked pretty bad at the end of the game, only good part about the niners success this year is next years first place schedule and they'll resign Alex Smith now.

Hopefully the Giants beat the Patriots.

The Giants haven't run the ball all season. It's not going to start in the Super Bowl. If the Giants are going to win, Eli is going to have to out gun-sling Brady. It's going to be a wild SB. The QB who throws the least amount of INT's will win. Both teams will score over 30 points I think.

Yeah, I knew Smith was last season, but didn't realize he took a one-year deal. Is there a team option for this year or is he an unrestricted free agent? He might be a popular guy this offseason. All I hear about is Matt Flynn (ok, and Peyton), but if he's available I'm sure many teams without a solid starting QB might be interested in him
I'm pretty certain there is no team option.

I agree that this loss wasn't his fault but I think what raven is trying to say is that he's not in the group of QB's that could take it upon himself to win a game for their team.

But then again, who would have guessed at the beginning of the season that Alex Smith would keep the QB job for the whole season, let alone take the 49ers within one game of the Super Bowl...

He did win the game against the Saints. That was easily the best game of his career and it was a playoff game.

Obviously he's not Joe Montana, but he played very well this year in a run heavy offense. Matt Ryan is in the upper class of QBs and he stunk in the playoffs this year. Rodgers didn't play that great this year either.

Smith is not as good as those guys, but it shows everyone can have subpar games.

Alex Smith needs some work. You could see he was ONLY looking at Vernon Davis once it hit crunch time. Hell he was only looking his way all game since the 2 times the Giants failed to cover Davis he scored TD's. When the Giants double teamed Davis, Smith was at a loss. That being said, who else does he really have to throw to? The wide outs for SF are not stellar. He needs another weapon in his arsenal and he can be a QB who can win the big one in my opinion. You don't need a Tom Brady to win in SF, not with that strangling defense.

On November 2, 2002, then Giants GM, Ernie Accorsi, went to an Auburn-Mississippi game to scout Eli Manning. Accorsi hand wrote his non-traditional scouting report and then went home and typed it up in all caps and presented it to the Giants scouting team.

Below is his summary that came at the end of the report:

"Most of all, he has that quality you can't define. Call it Magic. As Bobby Boyd told me once about Unitas, 'Two things set him apart: His left testicle and his right testicle.'...We should move up to take him. These guys are rare you know.

Crabtree is clearly the #1 WR on the team. He wasn't targeted much at all yesterday as his jersey was spotless. Crabtree played well down the stretch this year and had his best year in terms of receptions and yardage. But he has never came into the season 100% healthy with a full training camp. If he does that next season, I think he's capable of 90 catches, 1000 yards every year. He has great hands and has above average speed.

Josh Morgan was a pretty good #2, but they lost him earlier this year and Braylon was a bust. They do need to bring in someone else as Morgan is more of a #3 slot guy.

Let's show a little humility about Eli. Until 2007 most Giants fans were kicking themselves that they didn't have Rivers behind Center. I was not a believer in Eli from day one, but he's really blossomed as a player in this league, there's no doubt about it. Sure he's a big dork, but he's our dork and all you people who don't like nerds can just suck it!

BTW I don't think Rivers regressed. I think he's had some sort of shoulder injury all season and nothing was said. His throwing motion was noticeably different this year. He had nothing on the ball.

He may not have dominated, but how did the Giants get their points last night? It certainly wasn't the running game.

I give the SF defense a ton of credit. They figured out what the Giants were doing offensively and covered their receivers in the 2nd half. They also put a shitload of pressure on Eli with only a 4 man rush. The Giants O line was unimpressive in this game.

No, I don't think he's overrated or anything like that. He beat the Packers. He led his team to the playoffs.

If the 49ers had won, I wouldn't have said "now Alex Smith will get the credit he deserves" because it wasn't him. Well unless he ended up throwing a TD pass in OT. But the 49ers most likely would have won it due to defense and/or Akers.

Anyhow, I'd love to have Eli on the 49ers. I'm just saying it wasn't really his doing.

And honestly, what if the 49ers didn't fumble, then they could have thrown an INT, or the Giants could have gotten it back. It's not like the fumble took away their guaranteed shot.

So yeah, it sucks, but fuck, there's always a loser in sports unfortunately.

Don't give the 49ers defense too much credit? Huh? They pressured Manning all day and sacked him 6 times! Only gave up 20 pts, with 10 of those off of 2 fumbles and putting the Giants near the red zone both times. The Giants averaged almost 25 ppg in the regular season. I think the Niners D deserves a ton of credit and they showed they are one of the best in the league. And when you factor in all the 3 and outs from the Niners offense, it makes the D that much more impressive.

This group will be a force for the next few years since they are mostly on the younger side.

Who knows. But I'd sure like to see him play in the same offense for 2 consecutive years.

As a Charger fan and an original Eli hater, even I have to admit he's got to be considered among the top 5 QB's in the league.....maybe top 6.

Alex Smith does not need to "carry" the 49ers. All he needs to do is manage the game, which he does fairly well. Don't ask him to come back down 2 TD's all the time. Obviously he can (see the NO playoff game), but I don't think he would do it on a regular basis. He was telegraphing his passes to Davis yesterday, but he simply needs more weapons. Crabtree is nice, but he still needs a big play maker at the wide receiver position so teams can't double Vernon Davis. Hitting Gore out of the backfield worked well for him as well. With just one more piece (a play making wideout), he'll have 3 weapons and SF will be a force in the league for a good enough window to win a championship I believe.

Crabtree might be a decent #2, but they need to go out and get a stud go-to WR.

I really thought Maclin and Crabtree were going to be big-time players coming out during the 2009 draft.

Edit: I just checked Maclin's career stats, and they are pretty good. He definitely plays in a more high powered passing attack system..

So you mean like a Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer?

The Giants could win the SB and be called SB champs but I would have them as maybe the 5th best team in the NFL. Being hot at the right time of the year doesn't make them the best team of the season in my book. Without a serious choke job by one person on the 49ers Eli and his team are sitting at home eating nachos and saying "Ahh shucks" a lot on SB Sunday. JMO, but a 9-7 team considered the best team in the NFL this season is a joke.

I don't get all the Eli praise. 60 pass attempts and he scores, what, 10 point that weren't gifts from Kyle Williams? Other than the punt turnovers I don't think the Giants made it onto the 49er's side of the field after halftime. Plus he had multiple passes that weren't picks not because they weren't bad throws but because they were so bad that defenders were running into each other trying to make the int.

I'm not saying he was horrible, and it was a tough game to be sure, but it certainly wasn't a great outing.

Alex Smith will be back. Harbaugh likes him.

Honestly, after this past season, I am curious as to see if he can best his umbers which were all career highs.

nope it wasnt... hell, he could have done better, but thats what the 49er defense is all about.. they played awesome defense..

I guess people just looked to Eli as how he handled the pressure and getting punished all game... i mean, you have to cut the guy some credit.. i said it before... most guys who get crushed like that either fumble or come out with an injury but my goofy bastard didnt...

Pretty much. Manage the game, don't be stupid with the ball. Those guys won Super Bowls, Smith can too. Harbaugh I'm sure wants to draft and mold a QB in his system, but Smith is good enough to carry the torch for now.

Jerry Jones: Eli is the biggest difference between Giants and Cowboys
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 23, 2012, 7:08 PM EST

Cowboys owner/coach/spokesman/G.M. Jerry Jones was asked Monday at the Senior Bowl about the success of the Super Bowl-bound New York Giants.

In Jones’ estimation, the biggest difference between the Cowboys and the Giants is simple: Eli Manning. Ouch.

Calvin Watkins on ESPNDallas.com reports that Jones subsequently offered praise for Tony Romo, possibly in an effort to put the toothpaste back in the tube. But the point seems clear. Jones essentially said that the 31-year-old quarterback of his division rival has a big edge over his own 31-year-old quarterback.

Perhaps this was Jones’ way of sending a message to Romo that he won’t be coddled any more. Even if that’s true, I fully expect Jones to later “clarify” these words and make a show of support for Romo.

It’s also worth wondering if Jones takes an overly simplistic view of what separates the two teams. We’d give the Giants the edge in terms of their pass rush, their coaching continuity, and their ability to make the right front-office decisions.

ouch... Romo isnt bad whatsoever but this is Jerrah we are talking about here

Yeah, he's out of touch with his own team (still). Jerry needs to take a look at building a reliable defense, that's where NY and Dallas differ this year. (actually needs to allow someone ELSE take a look)

For the record, I don't believe that the Giants targeted Williams because of his concussion history like it's being reported. They simply took advantage of someone that doesn't normally return kicks, on a wet field with a slippery ball, and it worked.

Harbaugh should have had someone else like Hunter return kicks after Williams made the first error, and possibly even earlier when he unnecessarily dove for a couple of balls.

So you think the Giants players lied when they said that's what they did?

I'd say the ownership situation is the biggest difference between the Giants and the Cowboys.

You're right. The one that recovered both, and the one that had the key hit.

Sad.

The Mara and Tisch family keep their mouths shut most of the time. That gets big kudos from me as a fan.

They are not very reactionary, because if they were Coughlin would have been fired a couple of years ago probably.
