THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER (2012) (dir. Chbosky) (Emma Watson, Logan Lerman)

An introvert freshman is taken under the wings of two seniors who welcome him to the real world.

i read this book back in high school and i thought it was wonderful (reminiscent of CATCHER IN THE RYE) - glad to see the book's author is also directing so i imagine this will be a close adaptation of the book.

Not to mention his turn in Afterschool.

Did the book have psychotic murder?
The movie has to now, right?

I liked the trailer but I have never read the book, so it might read with me different.

Will probably read the book very soon. As I mentioned earlier, it's my girlfriend's favorite book and she wouldn't let me see this film before reading the book first.

My wife told me I'm not allowed to see this one with her. The book is one of her all-time favourites, and she's worried that I'll dislike the movie (ie: story) so much, that it'll ruin it for her.

Emma Watson doing an American accent just feels wrong.

can't tell if I'll like it. Trailer gives me the vibe that I'll kind of know where it'll go kind of but at the same time...no. Sooooooo there's interest at least.

Getting great reviews at TIFF

"Part “Garden State,” part “Wonderboys,” and with a smidgeon of “American Beauty” thrown in for good measure, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is a must-see for fans of the coming-of-age drama. At its worse, it leans toward a maudlin overly-dramatic high school mentality, but that’s around 100 seconds of a 102 minute film, nothing too serious. At it’s best, it is indeed very, very good, an artful film in the truest sense of the word, holding a mirror up to your memories, even if they never existed there at all."

The trailer interested me, I think I'll check it out this weekend.

Edit (09/29): Since I'm the last poster I will comment that I did see it yesterday and I thought it was really good. Emma Watson has a post-Potter career ahead of her. And...what other cases are there of an author directing a movie on his own book? I can't think of any at the moment.

I knew going in that this would have some cringe enducing moments, but despite all that I really enjoyed this film. Emma Watson isn't a difficult girl to fall in love with. It was a standard coming of age tale in a lot of ways, but it had so much charm and sentiment that it really didn't matter. Great acting across the board and some great music too. Although I don't know how anyone(teenagers or not) could not know a song is by David Bowie when its so clearly by David Bowie. But yeah, I'd definitly recommend it.

Re: THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER (2012) (dir. Chbosky) (Emma Watson, Logan Lerman)

At my Q&A, Stephen Chbosky said something to the effect of "well, I was a teenager in the early 90s and I didn't know it was Bowie, I hadn't heard 'Heroes'. Or if I had, I didn't associate it with David Bowie - to me, David Bowie was, you know, Labyrinth. I didn't know all the older Bowie songs. I do now, but you discover all that stuff when you become a teenager anyway."

Fuck, this movie choked me up. It's a great movie filled with great scenes. There's some slag and some cheese but I don't give a fuck, I loved it. One of my favorites this year. If this isn't a classic down the road, I'd be surprised.

Re: THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER (2012) (dir. Chbosky) (Emma Watson, Logan Lerman)

Logan Lerman plays "Charlie" in "Perks of Being a Wallflower", in a bittersweet coming-of-age story. The film is structured by using Charlie's letters to a pen pal to showcase the major plot points. Charlie is very bright, reads voraciously, could have a future as a writer.

Charlie has had a rough summer leading up to his freshman year in high school, and the prospects of being friend-less is a daunting one, but his fortunes turn as he finds a small set of older friends who are not quite in the "popular" crowd and have their own quirks, but they accept Charlie, and show him the ropes of navigating high school outside of school. Charlie crushes on Sam (Emma Watson), but she's emotionally unavailable, and he has to deal with other minefields with another female in the group later on, while also dealing with the fallout, and feelings of being ostracized. There are many really sweet, understated moments in the film that hit all the right notes of conveying Charlie's internal feelings, and other issues that are dealt with in the last act of the film.

I give it 3.5 stars, or a grade of B+.

Finally saw the film tonight.

I absolutely loved it and it's now one of my favorite films of 2012. As Jules mentioned, this filmed choked me up pretty hard.

Going to try and see it again soon.

Caught this in the theater finally. Wonderfully written and acted. I went into it knowing nothing else besides the book's popularity and Emma Watson.

One of the best movies about being a teenager I've seen in a long time.
