Denver

I think I want Detroit to win more than I can see them winning, but I'll still pick 'em.

With the way Big Ben is banged up (now supposedly even worse) and expected to start, I can see the Denver match up being a repeat of the 49ers game from a few weeks ago. Good defense, low scoring with Tebow having just enough muster to pull it off.

As much as I love football this weekend is one that never really gets me too jazzed. Not sure why as I get to see 4 games. But I would like to see:

Pitt in a 50-0 zip game
NO in a 50-0 zip game
And the Giants. I just can't get excited for Houston and Cincy at all glad it is the first one on Saturday seems even the networks think it is a throwaway game. Sorry if you are fans of the teams.

Probably because you still have some marginal teams playing, although sometimes they pull off the shocker (like Seattle last year). To me the best NFL weekend (besides opening week) is the 2nd round of the playoffs. I'm already looking forward to: Saints-Niners and either Steelers-Pats II or Steelers-Ravens III. Of course now watch the Saints and Steelers go down.

According to the pick trends of the "experts" participating in the Survivor Pool (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/sports-talk/597782-dvdtalk-2011-nfl-playoff-survivor-pool-9th-annual.html), the odds for this weekend's games appear to be:

Houston 7:8 (pretty much a dead heat at this point)
New Orleans 1:9
NY Giants 1:2
Pittsburgh 1:17

For all the pundits that are pointing out how the Bengals have only beaten two teams over .500, I wonder how many realize that the Patriots haven't beaten any?

Cincy, Pitts, Giants, Saints

Then Pats over Cincy, Ravens over Steelers, Saints over Niners, Green Bay over Giants

Then Ravens over Pats, Saints over Green Bay

Super Bowl: Saints over Ravens

(This will change if Roethlisberger is healthy. If he heals up then replace Ravens with Steelers)

Hard to fault people who are willing to give the Pats a little benefit of the doubt based on the pedigree. At least compared to the Bungles.

That being said, I think the Pats lack of being battle-tested this season is going to hurt them in these playoffs. They played only 2 teams with a winning record (and lost both).

BTW - Cincy has beaten only 1 team with a winning record - Tennessee.

I just think it's unfair to say team A has problems because they've only beaten one +.500 team yet team B is a Super Bowl favorite though they haven't beaten any. If you're not looking at pedigree, I think there's a good chance that the Patriots are a 10-6 team masquerading as the #1 seed.

And if you are looking at pedigree... then I see no playoff wins in 4 years.

Well it's all sorted out on the field, so it's a non-issue. It's not we're comparing 2 college teams....thank god.

Frankly, I think it's also because the carbon blobs and media are dying to see Pats-Pack to get their shootout. I'd much rather see the Pack (or Saints) go up against a top D like the Ravens. Plus I'm getting tired of seeing the same (3) teams represent the AFC year after year.

You know, I can't disagree. The Stripes beat the teams they were better than, and lost to the teams that were better than them - at least looking at the records. All of the AFC teams that finished above .500 made the playoffs - including Cincinnati, but excluding Tennessee. Cincinnati beat Tennessee head-to-head, so them being in the playoffs as the #6 seed is right where they should be IMO.

In Cincy's defense, though, except for the blowout loss at Pittsburgh they were competitive in all of their losses. Every one of them was by a TD or less and ended with them either having the ball needing to score to tie/win, or with them on defense needing to stop their opponent from scoring to tie/win. Not too shabby for a team that lost their veteran QB to a hold-out, forcing them to start a 2nd round rookie QB with NO training camp, and for a team that was picked to come in dead last in the division, conference, and in some experts' opinion the entire league. Vegas had set the over/under at 4 wins back in August, and today they're in the playoffs. Not bad at all.

Just wait until next year when they're supposed to be competitive.

I am. And taking the pulse of the folks I sit around at Paul Brown Stadium, the folks I tailgate with, and the folks on the various Bengal fan boards - we all pretty much feel this way.

I'm delighted we made the playoffs, and am obviously disappointed that we lost, but I am stoked about the future. 2011 was "bonus football" as far as I'm concerned - we're not supposed to be competitive until 2012-14. Now we've got demonstrated talent on offense, a vastly improved defense, a team with playoff experience, and stockpiled draft picks (6 in the top 2 rounds over the next two years) - yes, the future does look bright.

Meh...it's early. And both teams are still feeling each out and actually trying to run...lol....

Once they settle down or one team gets down by 10 I suspect the passing ratio will go up even more than it it currently is.

I hate that too! We don't need someone to control the ball forever after the catch is over and we've all moved on. Most of the new rules have done nothing but hurt the game imho.

How is the Black Lager? And no, no Cranberry Ale. The unfiltered was pretty bland and the amber needed a lot more taste...so needing more taste I went to this...so good...

With the way the game ended, hard to believe it was likethis in the first half.

Detroit really came unglued at the end of the game, but they played great and had a good season. A good Detroit is best for all of us, so we don't have to suffer those horrible Thanksgiving games anymore.

Sure do wish that the Saints had the number 2 seed at least. Damn those strange losses to Tampa and St. Louis.

Yeah....that titus young TD that got jobbed away really hurts right about now. I had no illusions that Detroit would win this game, but just having to play it kind of chaps my ass. Add in the 0 holding calls tonight when there were so many blatantly obvious ones on critical plays (the toss on 4th down was also made possible by Henderson blocking the DB in the back right in front of the ref - which gave the RB the corner) and dropped INTs and the amazing performance by Stafford and Megatron is soiled a bit.

None of which excuses their total inability to tackle. Just atrocious. However, the future is very very bright, and I really hope they get that kid Konz to play center in the 1st round this year - either him or Janoris Jenkins from 'bama to play corner. Upgrades there and have Mikel Leshour prove to be an NFL RB and this team can be very dangerous.

I picked the Lions because no one else did, and I thought they were just cocky enough to go into the Superdome and beat the Saints.

I didn't have any ilusions that the Saints weren't clearly better, but the officiating was absolutely atrocious. I don't think it would have made a difference, but that was a piss poor perfomance by the refs. I counted 4 obvious holding calls that went ignored or were missed. The Saints received favorable spots everytime they were near the first down marker as well.

Brees and Stafford are both native Texans - lots of good football comes out of this state.

not sure if this was discussed.. but here is a ? about the 4th down when Brees jumped with the ball.

Should the play have been a first down? Brees jumped up, extended the ball over the line to get the first down, but then pulled the ball back to secure it. Where the ball ended up would not have been a first down, and I am wondering why it was called that way?

This was not a scoring play, where if it was, the ball just needed to cross the plane of the goalline to count. Brees pulled the ball back but was given forward progress.

But lets run this scenario. Brees runs over the first down and then willingly runs backwards a few yards to not get the first down. There would not have been forward progress given as he willingly did this.

I also wonder why Schwartz didn't challenge this or the Colston first down. Both would have stopped scoring drives.

oh and the lions just gave up.

Yeah, it looked like he might have been, though they gave him the spot of the reach.

There was a similar play earlier in the day (though I cant remember if it was in a college or NFL game), where a receiver caught the ball right at about the first down marker, he was hit but then he sort of bobbled the ball backwards and had to reach out to pull it in. That play they gave him the initial forward progress as well, which didn't seem right.

aktick
01-08-12, 10:57 AM
I never have liked how they call forward progress...yes, in a lot of cases it makes sense, but in others it just seems to completely penalize the D for good play. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that they favor the offense with this rule as well...

300 yards per game x 16 games = 4,800 yards / year

How does Manning have over 4,900 yards if the team has under 4,800? Did a backup QB come in and throw for NEGATIVE 150 yards? Do yards lost via sacks or kneel downs count against the team but NOT against the QB?

I'm loving this. Tarantino has to be regretting his post game promise now.
Nah, he'd post that picture even if there wasn't a game.

Can't believe Harrison didn't stop in that millisecond between when tebow threw it and when he hit him

Yeah that's the one downside to Denver winning...but I don't think Pittsburgh had much of a chance to beat NE anyways.

He didn't attempt to slow up, and he extended his arms for the extra force. I'm not saying I like the rule, but he knows it.

As much as I'm for Denver and like watching Tebow I was kind of thinking the same thing. But he did have time to pull up and not hit him to the ground.

But I do think it tough on the Defense with a QB like Tebow....he is as much a running back as a QB. So you got to hit him or he will take off.

Overall, not the worse call I've seen. Again, had he just wrapped him up and held him up he probably would not have gotten the call. But knocking him to the ground a good couple steps after the ball was gone is going to get that call every time.
