Assuming they release both the incriminating and exculpatory evidence, absolutely. But everyone knows that is never going to happen.

Unfortunately, there are some people who talked to the league investigators who say they felt that their statements were dismissed out of hand because they were not incriminating. The feeling among some was that the league was not on a true fact finding mission. Additionally, it is apparently known (according to Tim Ryan of SiriusXM) around the league that one of the league's sources had an ax to grind and told people that he was going to get even on his way out of the organization. How much was his statement weighted when he may have had reason to be untruthful? That kind of stuff wouldn't even be included in a document dump that will never come anyway.

if this is the case, why havent the Saints sued and fought this?

Sue for what? Payton and Williams want to coach again. Even if the punishment was for pay-for-performance and not pay-to-injure, the coaching staff stonewalled and were punished for that. The team's only recourse was to appeal to Goodell, which they did, and lost.

Vilma's suit would most certainly incorporate evidence and testimony outside of what the NFL won't share, because he has the burden of proof. That's any of the Saints' only hope, and it is a complete shot in the dark.

If you're going to break your foot and miss 12 weeks, now's the perfect time. You get to miss preseason and be back right on time. Regardless, the Giants could put up 28+ w/o Nicks vs. the Cowboys "D." ;)

Apparently Mike Vanderjagt is still an idiot.

http://www.huliq.com...-school-student

Former NFL kicker accused of choking middle school student

In a report released Friday, it was revealed that Vanderjagt, now working as a part-time middle school football coach, was accused of choking a student during a confrontation in March.

Vanderjagt was working at Charter Middle School in Marco Island, Fla. According to the former Indianapolis Colts kicker, Vanderjagt had been receiving taunts for months from one student. One jeer included the phrase "wide left, wide left," a jab at some of Vanderjagt's key field goal misses during his NFL career.

According to the police report, a student alleged that Vanderjagt approached him, put his hands on the boy's throat and hurled some obscenities at him. Another student backed up the story.

Vanderjagt has a slightly different recollection of what happened and denies he choked the child. The kicker told police that he did put his hands on the boy, but it was only to keep him in place while he talked to him, and he never put his hands around the boy's throat.

After looking into the matter, police decided that no charges would be filed against Vanderjagt, who is currently suspended from his volunteer job as coach. The school plans to conduct an investigation, and Vanderjagt's future as coach will be decided by the school's principal and the charter school board.

Despite an NFL career that included an 86.466 percent field goal conversion, currently good for 2nd in NFL history, Vanderjagt may be more well-known for making disparaging comments about his Colts teammates in 2003. He questioned the passion of quarterback Peyton Manning and head coach Tony Dungy.

In response, Manning famously called Vanderjagt an idiot.

"We're talking about our idiot kicker who got liquored up and ran his mouth off," Manning said at that year's Pro Bowl.

At one point, Vanderjagt was the highest-paid kicker in the NFL but after those comments, his career seemed to take a nosedive. He was let go by Indianapolis after missing a critical field goal in the 2005 NFL playoffs against Pittsburgh -- the Colts won the Super Bowl in 2006, the year after Vanderjagt was released. Meanwhile, the kicker moved on to Dallas, but he was cut midway through his first season with the Cowboys due to poor performance.

For those who care, the Miami Dolphins will be the team on this years edition of Hard Knocks on HBO. It will premiere on August 7th.

For Immediate Release
HBO SPORTS®, NFL FILMS AND THE MIAMI DOLPHINS JOIN FORCES FOR
A NEW SEASON OF THE ULTIMATE SPORTS REALITY SERIES WHEN
HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE MIAMI DOLPHINS,
CHRONICLING THE RIGORS AND DAILY DEMANDS OF NFL TRAINING CAMP, DEBUTS TUESDAY, AUG. 7,
EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

HBO Sports, NFL Films and the Miami Dolphins team up for an all-access look at what it takes to make it in the National Football League when HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE MIAMI DOLPHINS debuts in August. The first sports-based reality series – and one of the fastest-turnaround reality series – kicks off its five-episode seventh season, presented in HD, TUESDAY, AUG. 7 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO. Other hour-long episodes debut subsequent Tuesdays at the same time, with an encore play every Wednesday in August at 11:00 p.m., culminating in the Sept. 4 season finale.
“We are delighted that HARD KNOCKS will be returning this summer and placing the spotlight on the Miami Dolphins, a venerable franchise that had an exciting off-season activity,” says Ken Hershman, president, HBO Sports. “This marks the first time that the series has featured a first-year head coach (Joe Philbin) and we are extremely grateful to both Coach Philbin and the entire organization for agreeing to participate. As always, there will be plenty on the line for veterans, free agents and rookies.”
“On the 40th anniversary of the greatest season in NFL history--Don Shula’s perfect ’72 Dolphins-- it is perfectly fitting that Hard Knocks is heading to Miami to capture the start of a new era for one of the league’s proudest teams,” says NFL Films president Steve Sabol. “After Hard Knocks’ hiatus last summer, I know our team at NFL Films can’t wait to get back on the field.”
The cinema verité series will focus on the daily lives and routines of players and coaches as the intriguing Miami Dolphins, who compete in the ultra-competitive AFC East, prepare for the 2012 NFL season. HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE MIAMI DOLPHINS will chronicle first year head coach Joe Philbin and an intriguing mix of high-profile veterans, free agents and rookie hopefuls throughout training camp and the preseason. Each week, players will experience drills, meetings and fun, while struggling to prove they have what it takes to make the team and make their mark in the NFL.
“We are excited that the premier company in sports filmmaking history, NFL FILMS, and HBO Sports have chosen the Miami Dolphins to appear on their award-winning series Hard Knocks,” said Joe Philbin, head coach of the Miami Dolphins. “We are looking forward to connecting with our many fans across the country as the program chronicles our 2012 training camp. The series will highlight the outstanding men who comprise our team and represent our organization admirably, both on and off the field, as they compete for a coveted position on our roster.
“The Miami Dolphins have long been synonymous with success on the filed as evidenced by our five Super Bowl appearances and the only perfect season in NFL history,” added Philbin. “That heritage serves as a constant reminder to our players and staff of the great legacy that has been left for us to uphold. Our team embraces that rich past and looks confidently to the future as we begin this journey back to the top of the NFL.
“All the decisions that have been made this off-season have had one guiding principle -- will it help our players and organization reach its full potential? This one is no different. We are convinced that our affiliation with NFL FILMS and HBO will allow football fans everywhere an opportunity to comprehend the significant sacrifices and demands that our players endure each day along their journey in training camp as a Miami Dolphin. We eagerly await the opening of training camp on July 26 and the 2012 NFL regular season that lies ahead of us.”
A 24-person NFL Films crew will live at the Dolphins’ training camp in South Florida, shooting more than 1,000 hours of video over the course of the series. Camera and sound crews will be given unencumbered access to the players’ and coaches’ meeting rooms, training rooms, dormitories and practice fields.
This summer’s edition of Hard Knocks marks the first time the series will premiere on Tuesday nights in prime time; previously the series debuted on Wednesdays.
HARD KNOCKS launched with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001, followed by the Dallas Cowboys in 2002. The series resumed in 2007 with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning a Sports Emmy®. In 2008, the series returned to the Dallas Cowboys, receiving a second Sports Emmy® for production excellence. In 2009 HARD KNOCKS spotlighted the Cincinnati Bengals franchise and the show captured two more Sports Emmy® Awards for “Outstanding Edited Series/Anthology” and “Outstanding post-produced Sound/Audio.” The most recent season of HARD KNOCKS in 2010 featured the New York Jets and the series captured three Sports Emmys®, including the trophy for “Outstanding Edited Series/Anthology.”
Rolling Stone noted that Hard Knocks is, “A smash hit series” while Time Magazine called the program, “riveting.”
The New York Post wrote, “Hard Knocks is a hell of a show and it becomes must-see TV for football fans.”
Sports Illustrated.com said Hard Knocks is the “most entertaining reality show on TV.”
The New York Times concluded, “It is a rare glimpse into the psyche of a team,” while The Wall St. Journal notes the show is “captivating television.”

Hey watch your mouth!!! But this all has to do with the owner Ross wanting to get more exposure. The Dolphins have been #1 in Miami for so long and now are on the decline. With competition like The Heat and the Marlins with a new ballpark and team playing well and even the Panthers making the playoffs this year he is under a ton of pressure.

All that aside I think the Dolphins have some pretty interesting story lines this year. New coach, new QB's(top 10 pick) new offense and defense. Taking 2 UM players.

I'm very interested to see how it plays out.

I agree that the Dolphins sound more interesting than the Jags (who have very few notable players and a near-zero national following). Most of all, I'm glad someone agreed to do the show. I love Hard Knocks and as recently as yesterday had heard rumors that they were going to scrap Hard Knocks in favor of a 24/7 format show that sounded much more convertional. Nothing matches Hard Knocks as far as getting an accurate view of life in training camp. So while there are easliy 20-25 teams I'd rather see than the Fins, I'm just happy I get so see some team in camp this year.

IFL team dumps Terrell Owens
Posted by Mike Florio on May 29, 2012, 6:50 PM EDT

Receiver Terrell Owens can’t get back in to the NFL. And now he’s out of the IFL.

The Allen Wranglers have announced that Owens has been released.

It’s hardly an amicable split. The statement takes multiple shots at Owens for not having the right level of commitment.

“Our fans are amongst the best in the league and it is impossible to maintain a player when even our fans notice and comment on a player’s lack of effort both on and off the field,” owner Jon Frankel said. “We need to do what is best for this team, our fans and this community.”

Saints quarterback Drew Brees has accused the team of having no sense of urgency when it comes to negotiating a long-term deal. Some Saints fans definitely have a sense of urgency.

A group of the fleur-de-lis faithful have set up a website, FansStepUp.com, which seeks donations aimed at bridging the gap between whatever the Saints are offering Brees and whatever Brees wants.

Through Tuesday, the effort had raised $738.09. (I see what whoever added the nine cents did there.)

On one hand, it’s an admirable reflection of the devotion of fans who simply want the deal to be done. On the other hand, it’s a ridiculous exercise in taking money from the have-lesses and giving more to the have-plentys. Brees can get $16.371 million for one season, right now. The existence of the actual gap between the long-terms proposals isn’t known, but it will be at least $16.371 million per year. And both sides are making ends meet.

Besides, the Saints surely are more concerned about the salary cap than the cash flow. If they give too much to Brees (regardless of where the cash comes from), they’ll have less to give to other players.

So where is this heading? Could Brees actually sit out the entire season? I’m glad you asked, because I already spent a few minutes babbling about the issue on PFT Live

i remember seeing Saints fans making fun of Packer fans for buying Packer stock... my lord....

Terrell Owens got the crappiest severance package ever when his indoor football league team fired him this week -- an eviction notice, plus a piddly $50 buyout for his 50% stake in the team ... TMZ has learned.

Sources close to T.O. tell TMZ the Allen Wranglers notified their star player, in writing, he had 48 hours to get out of the house they provided him -- and to hand over the keys to the 2012 Jeep Cherokee they gave him to tool around the Texas town.

But the biggest diss of all -- the $50 check the Wranglers wrote T.O. to repurchase his hefty share of the team's ownership! The financial screwing is most likely tied to the team's belief that T.O. breached his contract by missing a charity event and sitting out 2 away games.

But we're told T.O. is saying his contract allowed him to skip away games. As for the missed event ... we're told T.O. claims the team publicist told him the wrong date.

The whole matter could be settled in court -- as TMZ reported, T.O. is consulting with his lawyers since he feels he was wrongfully terminated and slandered in the team's media release regarding his firing.

The Wranglers have not returned calls for comment.

There you go. If it's true, let's see it and get on with the suspensions.

One thing that strikes me about that is the notion that a player being helped off the field counted as a "cart-off." The implication is very different.

I think I've finally found a team that that is worse at drafting WR than the Titans. For those who have forgotten the Jags have also blown 1st round picks on these wideouts:

RJ Soward 2000
Reggie Williams 2004
Matt Jones 2005

They also wasted a 1st rounder in 2008 on Derrick Harvey (DE) and who really knows whether or not Gabbert will ever pan out.

NFL has released some evidence....

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8057407/nfl-turns-some-evidence-four-players-suspended-new-orleans-saints-bounty-program

not sure what else the players are looking for but i hope this makes Vilma happy... bwahaahah

The evidence was less than 1% of the what the NFL claims to have. Goodell included none of the following, according to several reports:

1) Any exculpatory evidence that the NFLPA claims exists of Gregg Williams throughout 2010 on tape that they say backs their claims of no intentional injuries. The NFL included no video.

2) Any witnesses who would testify for the NFL. The NFLPA asked the NFL to compel several witnesses to testify at the hearing. The reason is that the ones that they asked (most likely Payton, who is known to have talked to the NFLPA, and Williams) said that they feared NFL retaliation. Obviously, Williams wants to keep a slim chance of a return, and he isn't going to cross his Highness.

3) Any connection from a Saints player to any injuries.

4) The "injury ledger" that Yahoo reported on. There is a ledger included, and it apparently details no injuries, according to Jason La Canfora.

5) One shred of evidence or testimony backing the claim that Vilma put $10000 or any money on any player.

Things that are included? Powerpoint presentations featuring Williams' various stupid remarks. Also, two pieces of "evidence" that didn't exist when Goodell made his accusations - Sean Pamphilon's 10,000 word essay from the end of May and a Jun 6th article where Scott Shanle says the accusations are overblown.

The NFL provided 16 of an alleged 5,000 documents. Less than 200 of an alleged 18,000 pages. Every piece of evidence is around pay-for-performance, not "pay-to-injure" or bounties.

But it's funny, right? Because Goodell ruined reputations and careers and doesn't have to prove any of it. BWAHAHAHA That can only work out positively in the future.

raven56706
06-18-12, 12:44 PM
why would Goodell pinpoint an organization that has become popular? i mean do you think this was something he wanted?

honestly again, i dont think this multi billion dollar company would be doing this without credible stuff.

But again, i have nothing invested in this...dont care. Just dont think the NFL would be doing this without stuff.

Mad Dawg
06-18-12, 02:36 PM
All of those questions have been answered again and again. There was no conspriacy. Goodell got information primarily from Mike Cerullo, who had a bone to pick with the organization and made it clear when he was fired that he would get even. Goodell gets a chance to look great in the eyes of potential concussion jurors, so he punishes as hard as possible. The Saints clearly broke the rules, and most would (and have) admitted it. How badly they did has been and why we should believe they did is what the NFL has been not forthcoming about after their first fiery remarks.

Frankly though, after seeing the evidence that the NFL released, and even though the origins are questionable, I believe Goodell has enough to punish. We may not know language or other things, but there is only one way to interpret a lot of these things. I can't imagine what exculpatory evidence the NFL is sitting on, but it'd have to be big.

Unfortunately, that means that the world will overlook yet another example of the NFL investigators (and Goodell) acting in bad faith and hiding information. Hopefully next time the team/players that get punished won't immediately be found publically guilty before they get to present their case.

Mad Dawg
06-18-12, 07:34 PM
Just to add to the above, I think the league's case (that they presented to reporters) was too damning for the players. But I was surprised to read the unofficial transcripts from the meeting today in which Peter Ginsberg (Vilma's lawyer) apparently went after Goodell.

Apparently, Gregg Williams and Mike Cerullo have retracted their "admissions" of a bounty program and Goodell has not shared that publically. And their testimony could have been related to what Ginsberg says were threats from the league that the people interviewed not discuss the case with anyone.

“We have, in fact, engaged in a thorough investigation. It has been [stymied] in part, sir, because you haven’t issued gag orders to people with evidence, former coaches, people with [the] New Orleans Saints, you had made threats to keep them from talking, you have refused to have them even participate in today’s proceedings, but nonetheless, Commissioner Goodell, we have talked to dozens of people, literally dozens of people regarding your allegations."

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/06/18/ginsberg-chastises-goodell-for-distortion-of-evidence-demands-reversal-of-suspension/

This wasn't shared with the media who watched the league's prosecutorial presentation this afternoon (which apparently contained facts already being disputed again). Again, hiding things, tilting evidence and silencing witnesses makes the league look bad. And that may not matter to folks now, especially since it looks like these guys are guilty, but it should matter for when Goodell behaves this way next time.

I didn't get MAX, but they also threw in RZC (which shows up as a special line item on my account) for free. The way the CSR made it sound, I probably could have gotten RZC for free by itself (like I know some haggled for last year) if I didn't want ST, but since they were offering me ST free as well, I went for that.

^Thanks for the heads up. I called to change some of my service a month or so ago and stopped my auto-renewal for ST. The CSR was quite blunt and said if I sign up later and call to cancel I should be able to get (I believe it was) $10/month knocked off the price ($199-$60 =$139). She would have done it then but the option was still 'greyed out'. I like your deal better since the 1-year extension doesn't bother me.

I've said this before and I'll say it again : There's no way whatever Direct TV pays the NFL for exclusivity rights could possibly match the money they'd see if they offered the ST package to folks with cable. I'd love to get it, but I prefer my cable provider. I make do just fine with RZC, but I'd pay $200 for ST if I had the chance.

Singleheader late games remain at 4:05p.

I like that change (even though it's irrelavent to me with ST/RZC). It allows more markets to see the end of potentially close 1p games. It also allows ET/CT markets blacked out of a late DH game to get more of the game JIP at 7p.

Well according to former Cowboy Martellus Bennett, Eli is the best QB in the league.

And according to former Cowboy Chris Canty, Jason Pierre-Paul is 'no question' better than Demarcus Ware.

Is there something in the water or food that makes the IQ of players who join the Giants drop by 50 points? :)

Never will happen. Teams love to use the threat of LA to get new stadiums or better leases. If they put a team there, the threat is even more empty than it already is.

However, Jags will probably move there. No more expansion though. The talent dilution is bad enough already.

Good news everyone!

NFL/Owners have agreed to change the blackout rules. Now a team only has to sell 85% of tickets to prevent a blackout.

http://consumerist.com/2012/07/nfl-eases-up-on-local-tv-blackout-rule.html

Average attendance at NFL games has dropped each of the past five years and is down 4.5% overall since 2007. Realizing that maybe it's not the best idea to punish football fans by blacking out local TV broadcasts of home games that aren't sold out, the NFL has decided to ease up on the rules governing when a game would be blacked out.

The NFL decision isn't just in response to angry fans. A lot of the pressure comes from two ends of the francise-owner spectrum. Those whose teams regularly sell out games would like to expand seating without the risk of blackouts. Meanwhile, those franchises that have avoided blackouts by either taking seats out of commission or by buying up blocks of tickets are sick of doing so.

Thus, the owners have changed the rules to lower the minimum blackout threshold to 85% of tickets. So for a stadium that seats 40,000 people, 6,000 of those seats could go unsold without the game being blacked out.

According to the Wall Street Journal, only one of the five teams with the worst attendance in 2011 (St. Louis, with an average attendance of 85.3%) would be above this limit. While the other teams -- Buffalo Bills (84.8%); Washington Redskins (83.9%); Miami Dolphins (81%); Cincinnati Bengals (75.2%) -- would remain at risk for blackouts, even with the revised threshold.

Agreed. Call me a homer but Flacco is better than most of those guys. He consistently gives his team a chance to win and doesn't lose games for his team. Tony Romo has single handedly (literally) lost playoff games for the Cowboys. Matt Ryan has failed to perform under pressure in the playoffs.

Flacco outplayed Brady in the AFC Championship game last year and had Lee Evans held on to that pass in the endzone it would have been obvious with Baltimore in the Super Bowl. He's deserving of a top 10 spot.

It's not a fantasy football ranking.

I can buy your argument for Stafford, Newton, and Vick. But Romo - yes, you're being a homer. Romo piles up numbers but he's got excellent receivers. If you gave Flacco Dez, Austin, and Witten, he'd be much better. He certainly would have been in the Super Bowl last year if he had one of those guys instead of butterfingers Evans.

Romo piled up numbers when both, or at least one of Dez and Austin have been hurt. Romo piled up numbers when Dez wasn't there and he had butterfingers Roy Williams. The bolded part is just further proof that Romo is the most irrationally and incorrectly criticized player in the NFL, simply because he plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

That pretty much says it all too - vis a vis Romo. And like I said, he basically won that AFC title game vs. the Pats (not to mention winning the SNF Pittsburgh game which basically clinched them the division/bye) in the final moment, if not for butterfingers. There's no way Romo can play like that in a playoff game - if he can even get to one.

But that's what I love about the Cowboys - they get so much national love in big games, if deflates the line. ;)

You mostly expect that from teams with great defense and average QB.

Also, I'm no huge fan of Joe Flacco. I don't think he's terrible, but I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer about 10 other QBs to him. His QB Rating last year was 3.1 points below the league average.

Maybe not top 15, but give the guy some credit. He's spent the last two years under a offensive coordinator that wouldn't let him audible under any circumstances, and an offensive line that let him get sacked the most times of any QB in the league. I think he's got talent, he just has to work so damn hard to get the ball downfield sometimes. I'm hoping he'll really get a chance to shine this year. :)

I'm simply saying I'd rather have Flacco than Romo, unless we're talking fantasy football (in fact, I picked up Romo a month ago as a free agent in my dynasty league). I think Jaws may have him a tad high at 9. I think he's somewhere around 11. I didn't think that before last year.

While we're badmouthing Lee Evans for dropping the pass, does anyone want to give Sterling Moore any credit for knocking it away in the AFC Championship?

Not really. It was a pass right in the hands away from the defenders. Sterling Moore (whose name I honestly didn't even know until you posted it) threw a rather weak hand and Evans let it get knocked away. I'm not saying Moore's effort was weak, I'm saying Evans in that situation had the positioning on the D to keep it away and when it hits you right in the hands in that situation it has to be like holding on to your own child. You can't let a random hand come in there and let it come between you and the Super Bowl. Had Moore came flying across and got his hand in there to knock it out of the air I'd give him credit, and probably have known his name before today.

ETA- and as Red Dog said/alluded to, we aren't talking fantasy football here. I wouldn't have Joe Flacco starting my fantasy team. While I think he's capable of putting up big numbers the Ravens simply don't play that style of football and haven't had some of the weapons that big fantasy QB guys have had. When I'm ranking "best QBs in the league" I'm saying guys I'd want under center for my team week in and week out to win games, and not lose games. Flacco doesn't lose games. He's won more games than almost anybody since coming in to the league. You can argue "it was the defense or the running game" and I can argue that Flacco simply doesn't lose games. We probably aren't going to change each others minds but for my money Flacco is a top 10 guy in the league and someone I would (and do) feel good about having on my team.

I think you're remembering that game wrong...

I personally like Romo, but his mistakes just kill him. And even when he doesn't make the big mistake, it seems the Dallas D then lets him down by allowing the other team to win it. Kind of lose/lose. Flacco will never win you a game. His best move is checking down to Ray Rice and getting prime field position from a Ravens D turnover. If you put Romo on the Ravens these past few years they would have won the Super Bowl. I'd definitely take Romo over Flacco.

I've been ignoring Jaws' rankings. As much as I love football and football talk, most of the ESPN talking heads grate me. Plus he had Carson Palmer ranked below Alex Smith for fuck's sake...

As I said, the hatred and obsession with Romo is completely irrational and idiotic. Plus, most of the same old recycled criticism of Romo can be easily demolished when you look at stats (yes, even 4th quarter stats, December stats, and stats that prove that the notion he's "unclutch" or is crap against good teams or "loses games" more than other top QB's is nonsense). But even when you manage to destroy all these myths about Romo, someone will always say "but he hasn't won a Super Bowl!". Well... so do plenty of other very good QB's...

I think it's funny that some will reject stats as a way to evaluate individual players, arguing it's not fantasy football, but think it's fine to use TEAM metrics (which oddly enough, only QB's seem to be subjected to), more often than not Super Bowl rings, as proof that a QB is better than another.

Romo can't do it all by himself. He needs help from his defense, coaching staff, wide receivers, running backs, offensive line. Defense, coaching and oline especially. Romo has done more than enough to win games after Thanksgiving but the guy needs help from other areas to get that done. Using this tired argument that he can't win games after Thanksgiving and playoff games is a little overrated when you look at the position he is put in a lot of times. After Thanksgiving last season in the last 5 games, he threw 10 TD's and 1 INT, three games with over 100 QB rating, three games of 250 yards or more passing(the other game was 249) and that is in 4 games. He basically didn't play against Philly.

Qb's like Manning, Flacco play with better defenses, coaches, etc so the mistakes they make won't cost them most of the time because they get support from the rest of their teammates. The Cowboys may have solved that by upgrading their secondary but the oline, coaching remain question marks.

I've been a Cowboy fan for a very long time so of course I know about Romo's INT's. The problem is he doesn't throw very many of them like Favre. I get so tired of the Favre comparison's. Romo is really not like Favre at all. Favre took a lot of chances, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Romo doesn't have years where he is throwing 20 + INT's. There are games like last year's Detroit game or the Jet game where he threw costly INT's but he isn't a wreckless passer that throws it all over the place like Favre.Romo's problem is the timing of his mistakes but again sometimes they are his mistakes(Seattle playoff game) and sometimes they are coaching mistakes(Detroit game) and sometimes receiver mistakes(NYJ game). There's been times where he has put the Cowboys into position to win and there is either a missed/blocked FG or some coaching blunder. He's been unlucky a lot of times.

I don't know what it means and I don't care. Obviously you do care what Jerry Jones says a lot. You quote him like he's your idol or something.

Those aren't excuses. Those are facts. The problem is people like you and the media don't really take time to see who was at fault when dealing with Romo and just throw him under the bus. 'Oh well, it's Romo's fault'. No he doesn't have Eli's luck where the ball sticks to a wide receiver's head or a receiver makes a spectular once in a lifetime catch along the sidelines or Eli throw's a 10 yard out and the receiver runs for the other 90 yards or a punt returner fumbles twice in the same game. That's the real difference between Eli and Tony.

You spend more time discussing the Cowboys more than anyone I've seen for someone who hates the cowboys so much.

Well, I'd say the Giants have had better defenses too - when they decide to show up, that is. For example, there's no way the '07 Cowboys nor last year's Cowboys could have beaten those Pats teams even if Eli was their QB. Those defenses simply weren't good enough. Now they probably would have gotten further.

hahaha... are you kidding? that was all over the news last week.... Freaking Toomer , Former Giant, picked Romo over Eli... If you hate the comparisons, dont watch ESPN....

Are we here to talk sports? ok so that what was relevant in the NFL the past week... wasnt the biggest story but it was news worthy... there was uproar over it from both sides... why Romo is a better QB statistically over Eli.... and he his.... but in the clutch, no one picks Romo...

I've said this before and will say it again... you put Romo on the Eagles and the Eagles would win the Championship.... Romo is a great QB but not under that organization...

Again, there is only so many excuses you can make for a qb and there is only so many times you can say Eli is lucky...

Romo can't do it all by himself... true but thats not entirely true... the guy gives up the ball in the weirdest way when he tries to overdue things.... when he tries to be the hero, he f's up... again... so its true if he had everything going for him(coaches, WRs and etc), he would be more successful, but so would every team in football..

you said you hated the comparisons but i said, its no wonder Favre compared himself to him... he did the same thing too...

hey listen, Cowboys is a rival and i hate them just as much as every cowboy fan hates the Giants... and i will tell you... if Jerry got a GM to run things, the Cowboys would again be a force to be reckoned with.... but since then, he has a bunch of "yes men" coaching the team... Cowboys have been picked tons of times since 2007 to be the Superbowl winner... since then 1 playoff win... there is something wrong there...

I think Romo markets himself well - he looks like he should be great QB and his girlfiends have certainly put him a good light. Or maybe it's simply a matter that he followed Quincy Carter and Drew Bledsoe. ;)

Romo is the QB of the Dallas Cowboys. That's the main reason he gets so much criticism. People only seem to remember the mistakes, and they are magnified beyond belief. People remember the Jets game and the Lions game, but seem to forget games (Niners, Skins,...) which he won almost by himself, one of which with broken ribs and a punctured lung. And last year, the offensive line sucked, he had to deal with a center (Costa) who seemed to randomly snap the ball when he felt like it, and right before said snap he had to tell guys like Dez and Ogletree where to friggin line up... Under these conditions, it's not surprising that he sometimes tried to do too much. And despite that, because of his style of play, he "won" more games than he "lost". Not only that, but he often gets blamed for mistakes that are not even his! "If Romo had hit a wide open Austin down the sidelines, the Cowboys would have beaten the Giants and made the playoffs!". When Austin himself admitted that it was his fault, that the ball was perfectly thrown, and that he mistimed his route.

That said, I have no problem ranking Eli over Romo, but I don't believe the difference between the two is that big.

Seems kinda high considering that he didn't play at all last year (drug suspension) and had only one year of production.

With Brees making $40M this coming season, that has got to be the highest single season salary for a U.S. professional athlete right?

Yeah I know the contract averages to around $20M per season, but football works differently with how guaranteed money is paid. Good for him and his family, they are set for life. I don't think it's likely that Brees will play until the end of the contract though.

Well, if you adjust for inflation, I believe M. Jordan's $33 million + for 1997-98 is higher. But in terms of the most dollars, it probably is.

Cory02
07-13-12, 10:10 PM
Gotta love the salary cap: the Saints are paying Brees a $37 million signing bonus but this contract actually frees up some cap money this year:

As the signing bonus is prorated over the contract term of five years, Brees’ cap number this year consists of the prorated bonus amount ($7.4 million), plus the salary ($3 million). This $10.4 million compares favorably to the $16.371 cap number that the Saints were carrying on Brees, a savings of almost $6 million to the Saints’ tight cap.

Chad Ochocinco on staying out of truoble:

It’s unfortunate that a lot of my peers have been getting into some serious trouble this off-season. What is it like 28 now? I have lost count. Thus, I figured I would share with you the 6 AFC and NFC acronyms I use to stay out of trouble. Excuse the Ebonics by the way, it is a more fun way to really express how I feel about this

Alcohol

So you want to get wasted. The dumbest –ish you can do in 2012 is publicly party like it is 99. Mofos in the club will be live tweeting your buffoonery for the world to see. You are in the NFL, making millions and you got a mansion. Bring the party home dammit.

Firearms

No need anymore. We out the hood now. Get a bodyguard if you are still that paranoid.

Crews

A Crew is not needed. Just ask Drake and Chris Brown. Roll solo, it will save you money and trouble

No man

Deion Sanders taught me this. You badly need a no man. Someone that tells you what you don’t want to hear like

“Are you really finna smoke, drink and of all the cars you got, you gonna drive the Ferrari to the club tonight and carry your gun with you? C’mon fooool, you gonna be on the next flight to go see Goodell”

Keep your NO man closer and yes men farther.

Fallback

You are famous and there are people that will hate and test you. You can’t deal with it the way you would when you were in the hood. You need to just fallback.

Consent

Be careful of chicks and groupies. Those consenting smiles are sometimes fake. Sooner or later you might be defending yourself in a frivolous sexual assault case as she tries to stick you for your paper. Yes, some of these women “Stay Schemin”. There is a simple solution. The iPhone has an HD camera now. Make sex tapes all the time. It will make great memories and save you trouble.

If you apply these acronyms, it will save you trips to @nflcommish and you know he ain’t playing around these days.

Yours Truly,

Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson

Martellus Bennett is going to love New York. And the New York media is going to love Bennett's daily ridiculous quotes even more.

Shortly after comparing himself to Gandhi, the Giants tight end said he had "ill feelings" about the Dallas Cowboys.

"I just want to kick those guy's asses," Bennett said, via the New York Daily News.

Just like Gandhi always said.

"I don't like a lot of people. I'm kind of an a--hole," Bennett said. "I'm kind of pissed off about a lot."

"And with that, Martellus Bennett officially became my favorite Giant," Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News tweeted.

I'm not sure New York is gonna love Bennett so much when they realize he's better at Twitter and making rap videos on YouTube than at catching a football.

At least Osi is making jokes this offseason instead of the past two years complaining about his contract....

In other news, Patriots released Joseph Addai

Supposedly he quit during a conditioning drill and got shown the door soon there after.

Still dont understand why the Pats let Green-Ellis go. He fit well with what they do and in 4 years hes never fumbled.

Lots of people are reporting that with the Steelers signing Antonio Brown long-term, Mike Wallace may now become trade bait. I keep reading the NFC West is a probably destination. (I'd love for the Browns to get him for Weeden, but I know the odds of that happening.)

Any Broncos fans know if Denver has the assets/picks/cap room to make a deal for Wallace? I know that they've already got Thomas and Decker, but if they were to trade one (or go with a 3-headed monster), Peyton could have quite the options to throw to.

Titans’ O.J. Murdock dead at 25, police say he committed suicide (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/30/titans-o-j-murdock-dead-at-25-police-say-he-committed-suicide/)

Tennessee Titans wide receiver O.J. Murdock committed suicide this morning in front of the Tampa high school he graduated from, according to the Tampa Police Department. He was 25 years old.

According to a news release distributed by the Tampa police, Orenthal James Murdock was found in his car at approximately 8:30 a.m. in front of Middleton High School. He had suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.

Murdock was pronounced dead at 10:43 a.m.

After Murdock did not report to the Titans’ training camp last week, coach Mike Munchak said Murdock had been excused for “personal reasons.” No details have emerged of the issues that Murdock was dealing with.

An undrafted free agent who signed with the Titans out of Fort Hays State last year, Murdock missed the entire season with an Achilles injury. Murdock began his college career at South Carolina, where he played for two years and was a teammate of Kenny McKinley, a Denver Broncos wide receiver who committed suicide in 2010.

Wow that's awful. I wonder what led him to do that?

Also, too bad on the name. OJ was probably his dad's favorite player and named his son after him. Didn't work out so well. There's a lesson in naming your kid after a celebrity.

Jones says Cowboys seek return to "glory hole" days of yesteryear

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admits he is seeking “glory hole” days for his franchise, which last made the playoffs in 2009 and has won only two playoff games since its triumph over Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX to close the 1995 season.

Jones was offering praise to veteran tight end Jason Witten for saying the Cowboys cannot settle for “the same old story” again in 2012. Jones declared it good for younger players to hear such perspective from a player who has “been outstanding” but has “not gotten the brass ring.”

Jones said Witten’s comments also motivate him. From there, he proceeded to launch into the most memorable comment of today’s opening news conference about the Cowboys seeking a return to their “glory hole” days of yesteryear.

“For me, it’s a reminder,” Jones said. “I’ve been here 23 years. I’ve been here when it was glory hole days and I’ve been here when it wasn’t. And, so, having said that, I want me some glory hole. So I have that perspective.”

Shortly thereafter, Cowboys’ vice-president of public relations/communications Rich Dalrymple chimed in with a reminder that “glory hole” is a common expression in the oil and gas exploration business pertaining to a high-profit drilling site. Jones, a longtime oil man, feigned surprise.

“That’s news to me,” Jones said, smiling.

I think I know what JJ is talking about. In the "glory days" of the triplets (Aikman, Irvin, Smith) there was a famous "white house", which JJ either bought or built, where all the Cowboys went to party. JJ probably figured it was better to have all the drugs, strippers, and hookers in one spot. There were probably a lot of glory holes in that house. :)

Honestly, I'd rather get a chuckle out of hearing Jerry Jones use 'glory hole' in the wrong context than ever, ever hear him use it in the proper context.

It's stupid that start of training camp is based on when the 1st exhibition game is played, and not on when the 1st regular season game is played. The Cowboys started training camp last (today) but they start their regular season against the Giants days before everybody else. And the Giants started training camp last week. Either base the start of camp on the 1st regular season game or have every team start at the same time.

Wasn't Thomas out last year because of an ACL? If he's re-torn the same ACL, then that could be not just a season but a career killer. Good luck to him.

Edited:

For Thomas, it is his third ACL injury in his career. The 27-year-old started every game for the team in 2009 and 2010, intercepting five passes each season.

Doesn't look good.

Even if Sidney Rice is healthy, their depth at the position is thin. We'll see if this is desperation or if he really did show something.

Sigh. Sometimes I hate rooting for this team. He manages to somehow combine the worst traits of Pacman Jones (arrests) and Vince Young (stupidity). Good old Fisher never seems to change. Shitty conservative offenses and defenses that always seem to rank in the bottom third of the NFL despite Fisher's rep as a defensive guru.

OTOH, Chris Johnson still looked like shit against the Seahawks. Only had one good run and displayed stone hands on passes. I'm really leery on him in fantasy football. That and Hasselbeck should not be the starter for the Titans. He has a noodle arm now and can't attack the defense down the field. Just start Locker and take the lumps this year.
