School me on headphones.
Alright I'm looking to buy my kid a pair of headphones for Christmas. He mentioned the Beats by Dre so I am debating on the Solo Hds for $179.
I understand these are probably mostly style over substance but what I do like about them is that they are "on" ear thus smaller than the over ear and a big plus for me is that the cable detaches from the actual headphone.
What are some other choices similar in style that my son might like that sound really good?

Part of the "catch" of Beats, is the branding and that is what he probably wants. Not just headphones. Yes there are better ones, but I have two pairs of Beats myself and they are decent. The Pro's I have are very nice. I would also throw in a vote for Sennheiser. I have a pair from the 1970's that still outperform everything else.

I like headphone.com for schooling. I take it this kid is not 5yo. You definitely want to figure out what size and style you want. And by style I mean closed, open, on ear, earbuds, noise canceling, etc. For on ear, I only like small ones. The heavier ones get annoying on my ears and then I prefer full over ear myself.
Pretty good odds you can beat Beats or Skull Candy (or other "cool" brands) for sound quality in whatever price range you are looking at. But the iPhone compatibility and detachable cord may not be possible elsewhere. And in this price range, you start finding many cans that should have an amp to perform well. The Beats should be fine from a phone or iPod alone.
Here, may want to note their bolded comments about authorized dealers:

Wait I just took a look at the Soul by Ludacris and they look pretty sweet. Anyone have any experience with these?

Well after doing even more research I'm really liking the Vmoda V80 True Blood edition. I'm gonna get these for myself.
