Hayao Miyazaki's New Film Will NOT Be One That Everyone Can Relax And Watch
I wonder how sad he'll go. Think it will rival Grave of the Butterflies?
According to Anime News Network, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki revealed in an interview that studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki's next film is "not the sort of work that everyone in the audience can relax and watch." He stated that Miyazaki intends to make something realistic about the current state of Japan in the aftermath of the tsunami and nuclear crisis.
It is well known that Hayao Miyazaki has been publicly verbal against the use of nuclear power. In March, he compared the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant crisis to the uncontrollable fire that humans received from the Greek deity Prometheus. Then in June, his Studio hang a banner on its rooftop stating "Studio Ghibli Wants to Make Movies With Electricity That Isn't From Nuclear Power." Miyazaki's strong stance against nuclear power was widely speculated as one of the reasons for Nippon Television's indefinite ban on the broadcast of his last film PONYO.
Suzuki has not revealed anything else about the project in this interview, but he previously announced that Miyazaki's new film will be a biography or autobiography. It seems likely that the story will be related to the topic of nuclear energy use and its danger. Fans of the great man will no doubt be curious to find out more about his new film, and it sure sounds like something that will be very different from his usual family-friendly animated films

No doubt there'll be a spunky little girl in it and she'll be voiced by Elle Fanning in the English dub.

A new Godzilla type of thing? (the original Gojira was a sort-of statement on the dangers of tapping incredible energies, coming less than 9 years after Hiroshima/Nagasaki).

The studio executives have been pushing for this since 1998.

In "Mononoke Hime", Miyazaki depicted the war between the forest gods and humans, which took place in medieval Japan. His next movie is going to take place in the 21st century. Tokuma says "Mononoke Hime was about Japan. This time, we want to make a movie for the world, which will be about the 21st century with environmental problems, terrorism, earthquake, plagues, population explosion, and so forth."

THE SUBMERSION OF JAPAN (1973)
THE SINKING OF JAPAN (2006) - a superior remake
VIRUS (1980)
CATASTROPHE 1999: PROPHECIES OF NOSTRADAMUS (aka THE LAST DAYS OF PLANET EARTH, 1974)
GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER (1971)
Plus, tons of others...
(But of course none of those had spunky little girls in them.)

Mononoke Hime wasn't particularly family-friendly, was it? I mean, it's not like he's never done non-kid-friendly stuff before...
