A Quick Note Redux:
Yeah, this behemoth is incomplete ...again. Now the stats are all there, although 'Average Rating' and a couple of minor ones got the boot. Regrettably the individual comments/recaps are severely lacking this year and the few that made it are just plain terrible. Personally I place the blame solely on brainee and his time-consuming 'Decades Viewed' stat idea that he forcibly inserted into my head by way of OCD thought projection.

And not that I have to say it, but some videos are NSFW and contain possible spoilers.

Also, if you notice a mistake let me know and I'll get around to correcting it eventually. Enjoy.

The Human Centipede:
"I am required to award stars to movies I review. This time, I refuse to do it. The star rating system is unsuited to this film. Is the movie good? Is it bad? Does it matter? It is what it is and it occupies a world where the stars don't shine."

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter:
"Just think of the message this film offers to its teenage audience; this world is a totally evil place, this movie says, it'll kill ya, it doesnt matter what your dreams, hopes and ambitions are, it doesn't matter if ya have a new boyfriend or a new girlfriend or you've got plans for the future. You can forget those plans, because you're gonna wind up dead."

Wolf Creek:
"The theaters are crowded right now with wonderful, thrilling, funny, warm-hearted, dramatic, artistic, inspiring, entertaining movies. If anyone you know says this is the one they want to see, my advice is: Don't know that person no more."

Hatchet II:
"There are many good movies opening this weekend. "Hatchet II" is not one of them. Tickets are not cheap and time is fleeting. Why would you choose this one? That’s a good topic for a long, thoughtful talk with yourself in the mirror."

I Spit on Your Grave:
"One of the most depressing experiences of my life."

Jason X:
"This sucks on so many levels."

Did Someone say Giallo?
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/N5J_ZctCCbY?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/N5J_ZctCCbY?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Giallo is an Italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in Italian indicates crime fiction and mystery. In the English language, however, it is used in a broader meaning that is closer to the French fantastique genre, including elements of horror fiction and eroticism. The word giallo is Italian for “yellow” (see Wiktionary: giallo) and stems from the origin of the genre as a series of cheap paperback novels with trademark yellow covers.

The film genre that emerged from these novels in the 1960s began as literal adaptations of the books, but soon began taking advantage of modern cinematic techniques to create a unique genre which veered into horror and psychological thrilling. These films, particularly such 1970s classics by directors like Dario Argento or Mario Bava, are only defined as “gialli” in the English language usage of the term; they are not called such in Italy, where they are usually described as thrillers instead. This stems from the fact that in Italian the Argento and Bava movies were defined as “giallo-thrillers” or “giallo-horrors”; in the Italian tongue the coupling of the two words, meant as substantives, had to indicate the public the salient characteristics of the new genre where the search for a murder culprit (hence “giallo” ) was interspersed with shocking and grandguignolesque events (hence “thriller” and “horror” ). English-speaking people, instead, following the use of their native grammar, took “giallo” as an adjective to “thriller” and “horror”, hence appropriating the term in their own language while being only partially aware of its broader meaning in Italian.

“Giallo” films are characterized by extended murder sequences featuring excessive bloodletting, stylish camerawork and unusual musical arrangements. The literary whodunit element is retained, but combined with modern slasher horror, while being filtered through Italy’s longstanding tradition of opera and staged grand guignol drama. They also generally include liberal amounts of nudity and sex.

Gialli typically introduce strong psychological themes of madness, alienation, and paranoia. For example, Sergio Martino’s Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (also known as Eye of the Black Cat) was explicitly based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Black Cat”.

They remain notable in part for their expressive use of music, most notably by Dario Argento’s collaborations with Ennio Morricone and his musical director Bruno Nicolai, and later with the band Goblin.

Can attest to the fact that Crohn's is no laughing matter, Danielle Harris is Elf tiny and the Phillip Glass score doesn't do Dracula justice.

Kudos Chad, as always. Congrats to those who won prizes. I'm still irritated at myself for flaming out the last couple of days and not reaching 180 or completing the checklist. Still, 174 is my career-high. Finally, a big thumbs up to Mondo Kane, for both his list and his total.

Not that it matters, but there's a typo in my user name. Also, I can attest that Crohn's sucks, suicidal depression sucks more and having your wife leave you sucks even more than that.

Also, I totally forgot to share the following exchange I had on Twitter with Patricia Tallman, who played Barbara in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead on Halloween night:

TravisSMcClain (https://twitter.com/#!/TravisSMcClain/status/131151864946360320) Happy Halloween! Here's my @flickchart post: "Night of the Living Dead" (original) vs. remake with @patriciatallman http://t.co/zA7Eyry0

patriciatallman (https://twitter.com/#!/patriciatallman/status/131174938806714368) @TravisSMcClain @flickchart oh, btw. fuck you Travis. My Barbara totally rocks. No contest. Unless you r pussy and can't take it in color.

TravisSMcClain (https://twitter.com/#!/TravisSMcClain/status/131176251531603968) @patriciatallman @flickchart Hey, I said, "Patricia Tallman’s proactive Barbara is recognizable as an actual person." Character depth FTW!

patriciatallman (https://twitter.com/#!/patriciatallman/status/131177450238513153) @TravisSMcClain @flickchart THIPPPPPPPPPPpppppppp!!!!!!

TravisSMcClain (https://twitter.com/#!/TravisSMcClain/status/131177994537541632) @patriciatallman @flickchart Also, you're entirely right: Your Barbara *does* totally rock!

patriciatallman (https://twitter.com/#!/patriciatallman/status/131178268392042497) @TravisSMcClain @flickchart hummmph.

TravisSMcClain (https://twitter.com/#!/TravisSMcClain/status/131178727659937793) @patriciatallman @flickchart What I couldn't put in there is that you're the hottest actress in either version (but you are). Better?

patriciatallman (https://twitter.com/#!/patriciatallman/status/131181211023446016) @TravisSMcClain @flickchart you should have said that. Now it's too late. and I'm very cranky. Prick.

Thinking about the stats list has encouraged me to set personal goals for next year based on decades viewed. I love 60's and 70's and I didn't spend enough time there. I think I will actively try to correct that next year. Thanks for encouraging me to add yet another layer of difficulty to my planned list for next year. :)

I just did a really quick perusal of the results. Damn! We really did watch a lot of movies. Chad, great job as always. I'm going to have to go back and read more of the comments when I have time. I am curious about the "something goes here" next to my name.

A huge thank you to all of our sponsors. We really got some great prizes donated this year. We would still be wacky enough to do this thing every year even without those sponsors, but it's really nice to have that support. So, big thanks to all!

Awesome job as always Chad. Although you had me in a bad mood for about 5 minutes when I saw the Slaughtered Vomit Doll thing in my recap... I laughed about it shortly after haha. Thanks for always putting so much time into making this thing work great.

Sponsors were great, even though this is my first year not winning anything (3rd year participating)... I'll live... I guess. Congrats on those of you that did win some cool stuff!

Can't wait until next year, this challenge and everything that went with it (discussions and all that) really helped keep me sane last month.

Sorry for not numbering my list but appreciate the pass...when the snowstorm hit up here I just never got around to it. But I had a blast watching all these movies. Just missed a movie a day average tho, which was my goal...oh well. Next year!

Get your addresses in to Chad boys, and your prizes (from Hamilton's at least) will go out ASAP!

Every year the stats seem more comprehensive and overwhelming despite the Chad saying he can do less. I am looking forward to checking out Frat House Massacre and Maniac Cop. This challenge was a blast and I've still got a ton of unwatched horror (that I refuse to wait till next October to screen).

Although it will likely be met with cynicism I would like to register a token suggestion to restarting the Horror Club.

Made it back to the top 10 after slipping quite a bit last year. I definitely burned out near the end. Probably could have made the top 5, but I couldn't keep my eyes open.

Also, pretty psyched to have won a prize. :D

Amazing. I've been having a rough time lately looking for work and finding out I won something was definitely a nice surprise. I lost my job about a month or so before Shout Factory started releasing their Roger Corman discs so I haven't been able to pick any of them up yet. Very happy to have won one through this challenge. Thanks as always to the sponsors and Chad for throwing this little shindig.

Not that it matters, but there's a typo in my user name.

My bad. It's fixed. I have a feeling there maybe a few of those as I didn't go back and proofread.

I'm going to have to go back and read more of the comments when I have time. I am curious about the "something goes here" next to my name.

Trust me, stick with the stats and videos. The majority of comments were in an early draft stage and after realizing how time-consuming they were I decided to put more emphasis on the stats and pretty much abandoned them and just left 'em in the terribly incomplete state you see them ...something, something.

Damn, I forgot to list my formats. For anyone who cares, I saw 2 movies in the theater (like the stats say) streamed 12 on the internet (thanks to Trevor who reminded me how much I like the movie "Carver" and how much I wanted to watch it again this year) and the rest were on DVD. If there's a "Paranormal Activity 4" next year in theaters, please remind me that I spent the night sitting awake cowering in fear after watching part 3 this year and thus don't need to watch any further installments alone.

Next year I'm going to get myself injured at work so I can sit at home and watch movies all month. Also make a "no drama" rule, since so many people started drama with me in October that it interfered with my movie watching. Will be moving to a deserted island if necessary.

Sorry to hear you had a shitty month, too. My girlfriend decided she wanted to announce our relationship publicly and then break up with me over Facebook in the same week (I feel 12 years old instead of 30) and my family decided to disown me and tell me why I wasn't welcome at family gatherings, which I already knew, but I guess they needed to make it clearer to me, plus a friend of 10 years up and decided to blow up at me and tell me I was a terrible person and she did it publicly on Facebook, as well. The internet takes drama to all new levels, I suppose. It was just all a bunch of sad crap and it all mysteriously fell in the last 2 weeks of the challenge, and you can tell. My movie watching dropped off dramatically. I was on pace to hit 100 and then everything just crashed. I had a good Halloween, but the weeks leading up to it were ridiculous.

:( I'm so sorry it was such a rough October for a few of you. That was my month last year. It was totally the dumps: unemployed and a fresh breakup that resulted in a split from a group of friends. And all of that pretty much happened (or at least was finalized) the day the challenge started. It was really rough, one of the loneliest periods of my life, so I very much sympathize. With any luck, your next challenge will be more fun and drama free like mine was this year.

I noticed that I had my lowest percentage of first-time viewings this year, but I had so much fun revisiting a lot of favorites.

For obvious reasons, I don't wish to really go into my situation, but the short version is: My year of suicidal depression came to a head and my wife insisted I enter a mental health facility. Then, when I was discharged, she informed me we were separating and now she wants a divorce. It is a spectacular time to be me.

Not to mention the Crohn's... Sorry to hear you've had it so rough, MinLShaw. I had been wondering why you hadn't posted in a long time. I thought I had it bad, what with a mild heart attack last week, a three-day stay in the hospital (including an angioplasty) and a ton of meds to take now. But I may have had it easy.

I had a bad reaction to blood pressure and cholesterol meds earlier this year and was listless and depressed and didn't feel like doing anything. I have to confess that the TV on DVD Challenge in January was a big help in giving me a focus and something to do that I enjoyed. I stopped the meds at some point and after a few weeks I felt much better, but of course that may have paved the way for the heart attack last week. No matter what you do... At least I've got the Comedy Challenge to keep me occupied right now. As they say, laughter is the best medicine.

I don't know what to tell you to keep your spirits up under such circumstances. I went through a devastating marital breakup when I was about your age, but I got through it. I do hope you keep your spirits up. Heck, join the Comedy Challenge and try to take your mind off it all.

One thing I try to remind people is that I don't have any kind of exclusive claim on misery. Sorry to hear about your heart woes. Glad to hear you're doing better, though!

It's quite gratifying to hear that our little challenge was helpful to you. If that doesn't speak to the communal aspect that Trevor and I preach about the challenges, then I don't know what would!

I've been hitting Bond and Batman movies lately, and decided to re-watch The Sopranos in its entirety (I'm already into disc 2 of season 4). Also, I've been writing. I've blogged a lot about my experiences with depression since getting out of the hospital and the responses to those posts have been humbling and heartwarming. Additionally, I've written and e-published a short story, and I was working on a NaNoWriMo novel until things got really bad in my personal life and I lost all momentum and focus. There's no way I can hit 50,000 words with one week left now, but I do want to complete the story anyway.

Also, last night I had my niece spend the night with me. I introduced her to The Princess Bride, played Operation and Yahtzee, and we've watched Bedtime Stories, The Wizard of Oz, The Aristocats, The Dukes of Hazzard (her pick) and The Nightmare Before Christmas is on right now. It's nice to introduce her to a lot of these things. Plus, we made mini pizzas last night and scrambled eggs this morning, so it was nice to share that with her. These are the kinds of things that she'll (hopefully) remember years from now and in the meantime, they're the little things that I can anchor myself to. Win-win!

Ah man, its incredible euro sleaze.

There were a few parts I really enjoyed...where the movie is sleazy it is certainly exceedingly so. But two things killed it for me:

1. Everyone has their own hot buttons for violence that make them cringe I think...eyes gougings being a common one for example. Not many like to see that. For me, it's fingers, and fingernails. Can't do it, can't watch it, don't want to. Nuff said there!

2. As twisted as it is at points (oh that housekeeper)...I found a lot of the filler boring. Even the kills themselves were very "meh" imo.

And by that I mean all the Full Moon and Something Weird titles were shipped off yesterday. Meant to send 'em off as early as Saturday, but it's just been one of those weeks from hell where nothing ever seems to go right. Just writing to say I received my prize in the mail the other day and wish to say thanks again to Golden Wheels for being so kind as to donate such top-shelf prizes and Chad for running the whole she-bang.

Also wanted to say that the second feature on the disc, Dead Space, just may have been the movie I've been looking for for a few years now. I remember renting a movie with a generic title like that as a kid that had a blonde haired guy and his robot buddy helping a space crew out with some monster or egg or something. I had seen so many titles while looking around that could be it (Dark Space, Dead Matter, Dead Matter, etc.) but nothing really seemed right. Soon as I looked at the back of the case and saw Marc Singer on there, I think it hit home that I finally found it again. I just need to get around to watching it and I'll know for sure. A nice unexpected surprise on top of an unexpected surprise. Thanks again.

Hooray! I received my prize yesterday. Thanks as always, Chad.

Where are the qualifications needed for getting a prize? I finished 4th and didn't win anything.

Because of participants in the past who would lie about their stats and to allow those who don't have as much time on their hands to win something, people are not given prizes based on their final rankings. There are a few different ways to win a prize.

1) Correctly answer trivia questions that Chad asked; winners determined by correct answer and random drawing.
2) Participate in the contest; winners determined by random drawing.
3) Watch at least 100 films; winners determined by random drawing.
4) Complete the checklist; winners determined by random drawing.
5) Watch every daily subset film; winners determined by random drawing.
6) Watch a film for every theme day; winners determined by random drawing.
7) Most impressive list; winners determined by member voting.

Do you see a pattern developing? Yep, pretty much everything is decided by random drawing. It's the most fair thing to do, especially considering how easy it would be for people to cheat on an Internet contest.

Also, there is a list of the prizes and prize categories on the first post in this thread. Since there were so many prizes, Chad decided to also give some to people who had participated in 5 challenges or more.

You don't need a complex or elaborate list to win something. All you need is to be lucky. Obviously it helps if you give yourself more chances. I won in the "participant" category, but I was also eligible to win for the 100 films, checklist, daily subset and theme days. That at least increased my chances of winning. With nearly everything being random, the only way a fancy list would do any good would be in the impressive list category.

If you really want to win something next year, I would recommend participating in as many of the optional categories as possible. If you aren't sure what qualifies for a prize, always go back to the first post in the main OHMC thread. That has everything you need to know.
