Day B4 COD my 360 died!!!
Hey
Well my 4yr 360 died or went in coma last night in the middle of BF3. Graphics started looking weird and then froze up. Rebooted but no audio or video. Let stand for 30 minutes and still nothing. TG...no RROD. I'm getting lights like normal but that's it.
Looks like I need to do the "Heat Gun" trick on the GPU. I've already did the "X-clamp mod" before when I got the RROD and that was about two years ago. Right before the day of COD!!....#@*!^#^%(!

the exact same symptoms you described (no RROD) happened to me 3 times.
I'm on my 4th xbox and wondering how long this one will last.

Well I got it fixed tonight using the "Heat Gun Trick". But i went ahead and cleaned both the GPU and CPU and applied new "Heat Sink Goo". I followed some YouTube videos but one thing I did make certain was to use aluminum foil over most the board like the capacitors. Got it all back and it played just fine.
The wife did ask just how old it was and how much was another one. The only deal is I just installed a new 250gb HD during the summer. So getting a new style unit wouldn't do me no good. But for now it works...till another year or two I'll need to open it up again.

wait, the newer xbox has an HD internal now?
The HD for my xbox is external and snaps on/off on the outside of the console.

You need 2 different hex drivers to remove 8 screws, or just some brute force but I recomend the hex drivers. Remove the old HDD and put it in the new one; either free floating (I would not do this) or buy an empty enclosure from ebay and put it in that. These are MS HDD so no banning should occur like when people use non MS HDDs.

Well this is the second time I've had to open her up and fix a heat issue. If it doesn't last at least the wife gave me the ok for another one. I appreciate the tips on the slim HD enclosure. And the 250gb HD is a "offical" MS one that came with the transfer cable as well. So far all is well as I went back to BF3 last night and it ran just fine. Thanks everyone.

This reminds me of the time my 1st 360 died on GTA 4's release date. Of course, by the time I got home from work and planned on playing it all night, all the stores were closed.
