So, who here has ever memorized the start of "ATLANTIS" by DONOVAN?
Everyone here knows the song "Atlantis" by Donovan - it was prominently featured in the film GoodFellas (I think during the snatching up of Billy Babbs) - down below the ocean, is where I wanna be repeated ad nausum.....
but what about the long beginning, which is Donovan simply strumming on a guitar and reciting poetry? Can anyone here be confident enough to stand up at an open mic, or even stand in their shower, and recite the beginning of "Atlantis?"
I can't, not yet. But I'm working on it.
The island of Atlantis was a continent...
That lay before the great flood...
In an area we now call the Atlantic Ocean...
What great an area it was...
that's all I got. I always get stuck.

Fun Fact: I briefly dated a girl who's mother fucked Donovan during her tenure as a flight attendant.

I had never even heard of this song until it was parodied on Futurama, and have never heard any reference to it since.

I was in high school when it was in the Top 40 (BTW, it was a big hit). The intro was just the buildup to the "Waaaay DOWN Below the Ocean" refrain ala the like the Hey Jude refrain, which started it all.
