<table border="6"><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#2F4F4F>THE "RULES"</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#E8E8E8>Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.</td><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc. The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format due to the beyond annoying 25(?!) image limit. It's also highly recommended that you provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#E8E8E8>

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB (http://www.imdb.com) and AllRovi (http://www.allrovi.com/movies) (formerly allmovie.com) are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (http://www.flickchart.com) (requires free sign up) and TMDB (http://www.themoviedb.org).
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):
30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

MORE DETAILED INFO:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

Simply Put:

<table border=6></tr><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Feature Films</td><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Counts as 1 entry</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Short Films</td><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Add them up to total 90 minutes to get 1 entry</td></tr><tr><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Television Shows</td><td bgcolor=#B0B0B0>Add them up to 120 minutes (including commercials) to get 1 entry</td></tr></table>

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

</tr></td></table>

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror , kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.
</td><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKiIroiCvZ0), a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with multiple pop-ups and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#E8E8E8>Someday something important will reside here.</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#E8E8E8>Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The ☼ thing is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.
</td></tr><tr><TD BGCOLOR=#B0B0B0>Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands [I]that seriously.</td></tr></table>

HELPFUL TIPS & VARIOUS LINKS

<table border="2"><tr>
<td bgcolor=#E8E8E8>

Provide a link to your list in your signature.
Review it. Even if it's just a mini-review, a simple thumbs up / thumbs down or one word description.
Create a list in advance of what you plan to watch utilizing a site such as:
iCheckMovies (http://www.icheckmovies.com/) | Listal (http://www.listal.com) | Listology (http://listology.com/) | FlickChart (http://www.flickchart.com) | Ranker (http://www.ranker.com/list-of/film).
If you're indecisive and can't decide what to watch next the List Randomizer (http://www.random.org) (via random.org) can help.
If you're doing a checklist, putting it in a spoiler tag makes the list thread much easier to read.
Increase your coffee consumption.
Insomniac? Use your disadvantage to your advantage!
Work from home? Ditto.
Skip the supplemental material ...there's always November for that!
Boredom setting in? Watch another movie!
Stay within your comfort level and try not to get too caught up in the numbers.
ENJOY YOURSELF!

Xbox users -- Have a Netflix Party:

Are you a Netflix subscriber with an Xbox gold membership? Wanna have a NETFLIX PARTY?
If so, post your gamertag or send it via PM to Mister Peepers (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=74401).

SEND A FRIEND REQUEST TO DVDTalkHorror to join the parties.

Feel free to host a party whenever you want.
If you're watching something check the DVDTalkHorror friend's list and invite people!

Just go to Friends ---> DVDTalkHorror ---> Personal Profile ---> View Friends.
And then you can just invite whoever is online on that list into a party.

Recently, Microsoft updated the Netflix player on the 360. Among the changes is the addition called 'Netflix Parties'. Basically someone is a host and invites people to watch a movie together. Everyone watches it at the same time, and we can communicate w/ voice during the movie.

You need an Xbox 360, a gold account, and a Netflix subscription. There's only one catch: For right now, Starz Play and Disney movies are not allowed to be used for parties.

We can use this thread to pick out movies and times to watch them. We can try to vary things up.

While we can watch classics or stuff we've all seen, I think it would be interesting to check out stuff that the entire group may not have watched. We could even take a gamble and watch god knows what. I think even some riffing on intentionally bad movies could be good for a laugh if done sparingly.

Four parts already, wow! I'm working on the I Know What You Did Last Summer trilogy today, man I didn't realize how bad these movies were until this year.

Yeah, first time we've made it to a fourth thread. Although, in the past I did occasionally let a thread or two slip past 1,000 posts. But it's definitely looking like we'll break the record for the most ever posts.

____________________________________________________

We'll have one final trivia question on Wednesday.

____________________________________________________

And since we're at the final(!) week a couple of early reminders:

- Don't forget to PM me your votes for your top 3 favorite lists. There's a lot of good ones this year so please don't forget to vote.

- When you've completed your list please mark it as complete. I'll give the usual one week to finish it once the challenge ends.

- If you haven't already, number your list(s).

The last two make my job so much easier.

Cool, I'm glad they help at least two of us!

But since I post so often, I kind of figured that some people hate seeing my long signature so often, and figured I'd turn every other one or so off.

I was thinking I was probably going to watch the original Hills Have Eyes tonight, but I was trying to think of less obvious mutant titles and am starting to consider Mimic. Of course, *that* could change by the time I get off work as well.

i watched another movie iv ignored because i just assumed it was something i wouldnt like...

DOLLS - was not expecting to enjoy this as much as i did. really gets going quick and made me really hate the characters and was glad to watch em die. really enjoyed the the animation

Bloodlust Zombies - a couple funny lines but meh a let down even by direct to dvd zombie level.

House of Fears - overall average but really enjoyed the idea of it taking place in a haunted sttraction...anymore other then the normaly known ones like funhouse/childsplay 3?

now gonna watch scream 4 and maybe one more for getting sleep as i have been binging and have to go back to work tomorrow

Oh, thanks for the reminder! Just got the BD in the mail last week, and fitting theme day is a perfect excuse to bust it open for my first viewing in years.

Isn't potentially sabotaging my wedding and future happiness by watching 4 films a day enough?

Really disappointed in myself, it's my first Challenge and I'm only up to #48. I started out guns blazing but then life caught up with me. In retrospect I should not have attached the Godzilla movies to this month.

Has any of the peeps here heard of Nine Dead? Well if your into movies like Saw this has the same flow. 9 people wake up trap in a place not knowing how they got there. A maniac tells them they have 10 minutes to figure out why they are there. Every minute he will kill someone until he gets the right answer. Very kool movie to watch now. I saw it last month. Can't put it to me list.

I watched A Haunting in Connecticut last night off of ScyFy. Average, ok movie i guess. But they say that the documentary is more spooky and creepy that the film. Is that true? If it is, I may have to get this DVD just to find out.

Also, where is the bluray of Twins of Evil? Last i heard it was to be released in November / December but there still is no word or even a trace of it being released soon. Been checking Amazon to see if it shows up there but no luck yet.

Yup that"s her, Melissa Joan Hart. I agree doesn't bring anything really new just a film to enjoy right now.

here is a link to a teaser trailer not giving much away.

So I finished Tremors: The Series this evening, and I want more. I know that it's trashy television, but it's damn enjoyable trashy television. It reminded me a lot of the first couple of seasons of Smallville with the "Monster-of-the-Week" format and I wonder if they would have moved into a more streamlined, story arc format if the show had continued. I have caught a lot of flack for my Tremors love from friends and family. This culminated to being the lone Graboid lover in a room full of people stating how terrible the movies are.

Also, I finally watched Jaws and the original Night of the Living Dead for the first time; I'm pretty sure that the indentations where I hugged one of my throw pillows are not going to come out! The last film gave me the idea for an assignment where I had my class choose a building around our town to fortify to withstand a zombie apocalypse and develop an argument. Strangely enough, no one chose the farmhouse from Night of the Living Dead.

Of course there's always The Hills Have Eyes or its remake. I watched Splice earlier this month and enjoyed it. And that's about all the mutant films I can even come up with at that moment, the ones I planned on watching and the one I watched. It's getting toward the end of the month, and I'm already so focused on my schedule of movies for the remaining days that I can hardly think outside of that box anymore.

Been checking Amazon to see if it shows up there but no luck yet.

in regards to 'A Haunting' I thought the unrated 'R' cut of the film was wild and the 5.1 soundmix top notch - I liked the movie probably more so than you, but yes I'd be curious in watching the documentary too. I don't know if this on the DVD, but on the bluray there is this:

"The Fear is Real: Reinvestigating the Haunting (1080p, 41:46) is a two-part documentary composed primarily of interview clips with the Snedeker's, the family whose story inspired the film, and their friends and associates."

Yeah, this month has been a real experience for me. I'm slowly desensitizing myself to violence and learning to enjoy being frightened by movies. The sad thing is that I act like a little kid when things get intense - yelling things at the screen, clutching pillows, getting overly emotional. It's a little embarrassing. However, I'm thankful I watched both films; they were so incredible that I immediately wanted to watch them again. The copy of Night of the Living Dead that I own is in a AMC set that I got for $3 at Big Lots, so I'm going to have to get a copy with some sort of bonus features. It was truly terrifying to me!

Yeah, I'm also doing a lot of first viewing for old time movies and classics. Sadly, my intake is so over the top that nothing gets to me anymore. I might have to not watch horror for quite a few months to get the scare back in me.

I know Scream got a Blu-Ray release. Are those discs, like the special features, any different than that four disc set that the DVD came out in? Do I need to get both to get everything?

I watched Zombie Strippers tonight for the first time. It was actually pretty amusing and entertaining for what it was. I was expecting a boring badly made film that strains to be 'funny' and falls flat, so imagine my surprise when it was better than expected.

The only area the film falls flat is the already really dated Bush bashing humor, such as in the opening news cap setting up a nightmarish world where Bush reigns supreme, which is similar to the beginning of Southland Tales which I watched last month(and that film is pretty damn boring in my opinion). The only references to Bush that was amusing was when one of the military dudes says after completing an assignment, "Mission accomplished sir" and the leader says "Now where have I heard that before?". That was more witty than the more in your face obvious news cap shown at the starting, and I did laugh at that line. Political humor can be tricky, and I think the filmmaker failed royally with the news cap at the beginning which strains to hard to be outrageous, yet seems so forced and obvious rather than being clever. So once you get past the cringe worthy news cap at the opening, the films pretty amusing and entertaining.

And I happened to have seen the R version, and if anyone is worried, no need to be. Since it's filled with nudity and gore throughout, that I doubt much of anything was cut. The film becomes pretty over the top as it goes along, and the final half really had some gross out gags and such. Robert Englunds fate is quite nasty, but hilarious. And then the bit with the ping pong balls is laugh out loud twisted over the top craziness with two jealous undead strippers battling it out to the bitter end.

So the film gets a  from me, and I'd probably give it *** out of **** for delivering the entertainment goods.

I enjoyed that one more than I was expecting to. I actually watched it on Easter Sunday a couple of years back. About 5 minutes into it, my wife got up to go to the restroom. I asked her if she wanted me to pause it so she wouldn't miss anything. She told me not to. Roughly 45 minutes later, she came back into the room and sat back down in her recliner without missing a beat. I still laugh my ass off thinking about how she would have rather spent 45 minutes in the bathroom than watching this particular title.

The sad thing is that I act like a little kid when things get intense - yelling things at the screen, clutching pillows, getting overly emotional. It's a little embarrassing.

Glad I'm not the only one. Add 'punching recliner' to that list.

I watched Zombie Strippers tonight for the first time. It was actually pretty amusing and entertaining for what it was. I was expecting a boring badly made film that strains to be 'funny' and falls flat, so imagine my surprise when it was better than expected.

I just hope no one makes the unfortunate mistake I did and confuse this with the shitfest known as Zombies vs Strippers (Zombies! Zombies! Zombies!). Kept waiting for Robert Englund and he never showed up.

Although generally helpful I began to question the buried.com subgenre listings on the discovery of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) under "splatter" films.

 That's why I put the disclaimer at the top of the list. They do also list straight sci-fi films, but that one might be a little hard to justify.

What is everyone watching to celebrate Vincent Price? I'm going with The Masque Of Red Death and then The Abominable Dr Phibes

The Last Man on Earth for sure. And maybe Witchfinder General or Theater of Blood.

I am so close to finishing the optional checklist. Instead of my planned Vincent Price double feature, I might do Theater of Blood and Wolf Man just so I can get my Lon Chaney movie out of the way. As close as I get, though, I won't be able to completely finish the checklist until Saturday. A friend of mine wants to watch The Exorcist. That's going to be my Dick Smith makeup movie, but she can't meet up during the week. It doesn't fit Friday's witch theme, so Saturday it is.

Having not seen it, would Santa Sangre fit Wednesday's theme? I know the movie is supposed to be weird and surreal, but I don't know if it's heavy on the red stuff or sufficiently depraved. That would take care of one of the daily films *and* the Simon Boswell requirement.

I suppose I should note that I'm also very close to hitting all my other goals as well: reaching 100, watching all the daily films and keeping up with all the themes. :bdance:

Theater of Blood for sure since I've never seen it before and its a subset film. Then probably Witchfinder General since I've only seen it once or House of Wax just because.

For anyone still undecided I also recommend The Haunted Palace. I watched it over the weekend and Price is great in this creepy film.

I went with THE HAUNTED PALACE (1963), easily the best of the Corman/Poe Cycle, precisely because it's NOT based on Poe, which usually involves some major contrivances to coax a feature out of a poem or short story, but on H.P. Lovecraft and one of his best novels, "The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward." (The title comes from a Poe poem and a few lines from it are voiced by Price in the course of the film to give it a very tenuous Poe connection.)

Corman directed a few other horror films, but I think this is his best. It's very atmospheric and, thanks to Lovecraft, contains genuinely creepy elements and Corman's direction plays those up to just the right degree--not too subtle and not over-the-top. The sets here by Dan Haller are much bigger than usual for the Poe films and the camerawork by Floyd Crosby is just beautiful. And there's a great supporting cast including Lon Chaney Jr., Leo Gordon, and Elisha Cook. The cadaverous-looking Milton Parsons, a Hollywood staple since 1939, is there too. Debra Paget is gorgeous as Price's wife. Price has to play a character fighting his ancestor's attempts to possess him, so he's basically playing two characters and does a masterful job.

If I have any complaint it's that the music score is too bombastic and relies too much on brass, when a subtler, more eerie score with low notes on the strings was called for. But this is easily one of the best films I've seen for this challenge.

...i hate when people ask me for a horror movie suggestion thats scary...I don get scared from watching these movies I watch them for other reasons. im tired of telling people to watch trick 'r treat or The Gate and hem to come back complaining "ahh that sucked it wasnt scary at all"
Just tell 'em Alien. If they say "That's sci-fi", remind them that many sci-fi films are horror based. Then move on to Halloween, The Exorcist, The Shining (Kubrick), and/or Evil Dead 2. At least one of those should give most "common" folks a good scare.

It would make sense if you have seen most of them, however, before you watch the documentary.

I started out with AN EVENING WITH EDGAR ALLEN POE before work this morning, then watched THEATER OF BLOOD when I got home and plan to watch MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH before turning in tonight.

Noticed a couple of things that I hadn't on my many previous viewings of TOB:

The graphic/humorous treatments of the deaths seem to foreshadow horror films of the 1990's and on: elaborate setup ups with a gory pay-off, like the FINAL DESTINATION series. NO one was doing that in the 70s. The Avengers TV show had some offbeat deaths, but they weren't depicted as gory or as grisly as in TOB.

When Price is decapitating one of his victims, who is lying in bed, he tells Rigg to give him a basin. She hands him a chamber pot.

The scene where one of Price's minions betrays him for a drink seems to be a tribute to a similar scene in HOUSE OF WAX.

I wanted to go with something different today so I watched The Bat also. An OK remake that is definitely made watchable by Vincent. I think that he made every (horror) movie that he was in worth watching. I've tried some of the dramas that he had (bit) parts in and I can't say the same for all of them.

I'm watching The Legend Of Sorrow Creek off of one of those 8 movie Midnight Horror collection things from Wal Mart and my god... this is the longest 74 minutes of my life.

I watched that one early on in the challenge. Fucking horrible. Also horrible was Hellraiser: Revelations, which I checked out earlier tonight. I was expecting it to be bad, but it was even worse than I'd anticipated. The way one of the main characters pronounced "Tijuana" made me want terrible things to happen to him.

I actually wrapped my viewing up a bit early tonight because I could feel myself getting ready to start dozing off. I wound up plopping down in front of the computer and burning up a couple of wildcards with some Trick 'r Treat shorts on YouTube. Tomorrow is my last day off during the challenge, so I need to get in as many titles as possible. Might be tough because a friend of the wife is coming over. Not sure what titles are acceptable for this person. I hate company.

I think a movie can be high brow and still fit today's theme, but I get your point on the gore. I was hoping since today's theme is called Extremely Disturbing Depravity that it might at least be depraved enough.

And yes, I'm going to watch it as it's one of the daily films; I'm just trying to maximize my time based on the checklist and daily films I have remaining to watch. Unfortunately, I don't think any of the unwatched daily films I have left would fit today's theme. Santa Sangre would have been great because it would have hit one of the composer requirements, too.

976-EVIL is actually listed on the page Chad linked to for today's theme. I have about 45 minutes left of that movie, so maybe I'll just finish that one for today's theme.

I'd Take Santa Sangre. While certainly more high brow than almost any splatter flick, why can't something high brow be counted on a gore/depravity day. Works for me. Of course we are counting Black Belly Of The Tarantula for today's theme which is more depraved than gory (not my fault no one wanted to keep Embodiment of Evil!) so it definitely is open to interpretation.

I could see that. Also I know a lot of folks that just don't like Eli Roth or his films period.

The second film definitely goes back and forth between being really creepy to being hilarious.

I do have to say being able to see a film like Hostel (the first film) in theaters was pretty awesome. It was almost like seeing a 'Modern Day' Grindhouse film in the theater.

I agree on both accounts. :) The film is very entertaining in my opinion, and part 2 is also so over the top bizarre and cheesy that it's worth watching as well.

Though I admit I hated part 2 the first time I saw it on a double feature with the original film. I rented both as a kid, and watched and enjoyed the first film, then was completely dumbstruck by the drastic change in quality and tone with the second and the pretty awful special effects and found the film boring at the time.

But over the years, catching bits of it on TV, and then eventually watching the entire thing again with the restored MGM transfer aired on cable. The film won me over knowing what to expect with it now, and it's a camp delight.

And I've always loved the new wave theme song that's used throughout the film. :)

It gets a lot of hate but I have a soft spot for Hostel: Part II .

I watched both films last year I think, and I tried to give part 2 another chance and still was underwhelmed by it. I think the first film is excellent though and really impressed me.

I thought the sequel had great potential with the plot, but it just didn't work for me at all. But there are scenes and aspects in the film I do admire, since it has pretty good camera work and art direction, and some of the editing is well done. But there was no real mystery left in the film as it follows the same plot as the first with some slight tweaks, and thus the sense of dread that lingered in the first was missing so it wasn't as fun to watch wondering what happens next.

But I guess I should give Roth some credit for showing restraint instead of going to over the top with the sequel, and basically builds up some unease in the film in a few scenes. But as a whole it still left me underwhelmed, while I was gripped from beginning to end in the original film.

Just got done with 2 movies. And soon the darkness and Creature..And soon darknees was a nice one. It had a feel of the turistas and the ruins. Where 2 american girls are in a latin speaking country and one goes missing.

Creature was ok. This is pretty new and I'm not sure if many here have heard of it. Starring Sid Haig and a creature roaming the swaps for his victims.

Agreed on the Camera Work and Art Direction. The opening credits scene by itself is fantastic!

It definitely is the same plot over again but made creepy/uneasy because of the gender reversals (female characters being preyed upon).

When I saw the scene where:

The Bubble Gum Gang uses one of the girls' heads as a soccer ball I died laughing. Made even more funny by the shirt being pulled over his neck celebrating the goal

Oh yeah. Fangoria had it on their cover w/ a nice write-up and gave it a fairly positive review. Even Nightline did a segment regarding its status as one of all-time biggest box office failures. I'm just ecstatic to see a 'guy in a rubber suit' movie make a return as opposed to the usual soulless CG creatures rampant nowadays.

Hmmm. Rubber suit creature theme night next year? Thought about doing it this year, but didn't make the cut.

I agree, the opening credits of part 2 as well as the first film are awesome and really creepy in my opinion. Roth seems to know how to handle credit sequences, since even Cabin Fever has a similar low key slowly growing sense of unease credit sequence, even though that films more all out comedy than serious horror in my opinion.

One scene I did like was when the girls first arrive at the hostel and enter their rooms. There is a happy couple playing in the room down the hall. Then later on that same night(I think), as the girl returns to her room. She sees giant men in black ransacking the room, the guy notices her and slams the door shut. That's really creepy and well done in my opinion low key subtle terror.

Also the scene on the train when the girls are introduced to the sleazy guys in their room, and try to get away as quickly as possible without causing a huge confrontation was well done, as you just knew the guys were up to know good. So again, a nice use of tension and unease without being to in your face, and just letting it build up.

It's those aspects I do admire in the sequel, but I haven't watched it since last year, as I was pretty let down just like I was in theaters. But there is enough to admire in the film, to make it worth watching, and maybe I'll give it yet another chance someday and see whether I like it any more knowing exactly what type of film it is. I certainly should give the commentaries a listen someday for sure, since I did enjoy the main solo commentary by Roth on Cabin Fever.

You are playing for a copy of Frankenhooker on Blu-ray courtesy of Synapse (http://synapse-films.com/):

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n172/dvdchad/Frankenhooker.jpg

1. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing first appeared together in 1948's Hamlet. What was their first horror film pairing and how many overall collaborations did they have in any genre?

2. In the 1980's what former editor of Fangoria magazine went on a crusade defending horror films that were coming under the scrutiny of censorship?

3. What was to be the name of the Hitchcock film that never came to fruition that was the story of a serial rapist / killer and initially envisaged as a kind of prelude to Shadow of a Doubt?

Same as before - PM me the answers, it's open for 48 hours and randomly drawn.

After having been...away...most of the month I decided to re-watch Dracula tonight. I had hoped to gorge on the Universal Monsters series of the Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolf Man canon (all of which I've previously seen). I started at the beginning with this and I'll see how far I make it in the next few nights.

The absence of music has always been odd to me in this film, perhaps because of the way it was staged and performed more like a play than a film. I forget how funny the movie really is, though, and found myself laughing at a few of the small jokes. I love the cast in this, and not just Bela Lugosi.

I'd initially planned to do the same but I wound up purchasing way too much stuff. :( Maybe next year.

I watched Dracula *once* with the Philip Glass soundtrack. It just didn't work for me and really didn't seem to sync well with what was occuring on the screen. The lack of a musical score seems to work better with this one. I read that there was no real musical soundtrack in the film because it was believed that, with sound being such a recent innovation in films, the audience would not accept hearing music in a scene if there was no explanation for it being there (e.g., the orchestra playing off camera when Dracula meets Mina at the theatre). The script *was* based on a Broadway play in which Lugosi starred as Dracula.

This film also contains one of my all-time favorite scenes. Where the camera lookes into the hold of the ship carrying Dracula to see Renfield at the bottom of the stairs/ladder going "Hnnnn, Hnnnn, Hnnnn". In my book this ranks up there with "It's Alive... Alive!!" and "I never drink... wine."

These are first world problems! ;)

I tried the Glass score once upon a time, too, and I share your lack of enthusiasm for it. It felt incongruous and unnatural. I don't typically mind the absence of music; one of my favorite movies is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which only uses something like nine minutes of actual music (not counting "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head"). In Dracula, though, there is a sort of emptiness to the film that I think music would have helped to fill. Specific scenes work better without any music, such as the travel by stagecoach, Renfield's arrival at Castle Dracula and the seduction/attack on Mina. Others, though, I think would have benefited from music though I can't say offhand what examples I might give.

It was an amalgamation of various stage versions, and it also borrowed from Nosferatu, or at least I think that's how it's explained in one of the bonus features on the Legacy Collection release that I have. I'm given to understand that the chief reason for the wooden nature of the production was really that Tod Browning didn't really grasp the nature of making a film like this and was still rooted in antiquated aesthetics. Contrast this with Frankenstein, directed by James Whale and also released by Universal in 1931 and it becomes obvious that not only did Whale do a lot of things right, but that Browning seems to have lacked the vision to craft a wholly engaging film.

Alive!!" and "I never drink... wine."

The stuff with Martin, the orderly/guard/whatever is hilarious. "They're all crazy. They're all crazy, except me and you. And sometimes I have me doubts about you." Cracks me up every time! Despite my criticisms, there really are a lot of little gems throughout Dracula, and I still think the edit of Dracula passing through the cobwebs was particularly well done.

I finished up season one of The Walking Dead this afternoon and was completely blown away. I love it when genre stories are able to become something special, something that really speaks to a viewer - not just elicits an emotion. The show is very thoughtful with its presentation of the characters and their plight. It was also nice to see Noah Emmerich for a couple episodes. I cannot wait to start season two!

After finishing, I made the huge misstep of watching Strange Invaders (1983) which was entertaining, but definitely in a lighter, less well-acted way. It was so campy and fluffy that I almost didn't count it as "horror sci-fi." However, the aliens and the way they dispatch their victims are extremely grotesque. On a side note, I read Watchers by Dean Koontz which features an exceptionally intelligent dog and was horrified when the dog in Strange Invaders was quickly disposed of.

Tonight I watched The Hills Have Eyes remake from 2006. I hadn't seen it in a few years, and it was great to revisit it, since I was really impressed with it at the time. It's a well done extremely intense film oozing with dread and atmosphere. The tomandandy score really helps it immensely as well and is just ominous sounding right from the opening notes.

I was never a fan of the original film, which didn't wow me when I saw it as a kid on video(the vhs transfer was pitch black as well and thus impossible to tell what was going on). And upon revisiting when Anchorbay released it earlier last decade, it unfortunately still didn't win me over. However the Craven commentary on it is quite entertaining and worth a listen.

So this is one remake I think is a huge improvement over the original in terms of delivering scares and freaking you out, while rooting for the characters to make it despite all odds appearing against them. It literally had my knees rattling when I saw it theatrically, and not many current films have that affect on me. I can only name four films from 2000-today that actually did unsettle me and creep me out and this was one of them.

The one thing both versions have in common is they both spawned an awful sequel and the only person to blame for them is Craven regardless of the excuses he makes for them.

I like "Carver." Most other people seemed to hate it, but Trevor seemed to like it, too, so there's two of us. :D

Others that are pretty good and seem to be available on streaming:

Scarecrows
vampire circus
sometimes they come back
Amityville II: The Possession (I think the ending sucked, though, just to warn you)
Puppet Master II
Child's Play
The Haunting in Connecticut
Fear of the Dark
Severed: Forest of the Dead

Carrie
Event Horizon

Shredder
The Last House on the Left (1972)
House of 9
The Devil's Backbone
The Burning
Mulberry Street
The Gravedancers (again, sucky ending)

This is about where I am as well except replace trying not to do checklist duplicates with an all FTV challenge.

I really didn't think I would be able to make the hundred this time, last time I was unemployed and it was still neck and neck.

Also is that ROTLD on vhs? Or a different region disc?

Different region.

I've been sticking with first time viewings or at the very least, something I've seen but haven't seen the disc I own. The 31 subset is the only thing forcing me to rewatch anything, 20 movies actually. I might not do it because of that next year, depending on if it's a lot again.

Has anyone sat down to watch a movie for the first time to realize they've already seen it?

Practically every challenge. But surprisingly not this year ...yet. And that's gotta be a first.

So that Walking Dead season 2 opener does it count as 3/4 of a number or a full number since it was 90 minutes?

It counts as a complete entry, per Chad.

That was a mistake on my part and should have said ¾, but go ahead and count it as a full entry. My asshat co-worker told me it was going to be with limited commercial interruptions. Instead it turned out to be 33(!) minutes of them.

Count me as another person who likes The Ruins.

Same.

2am is a little late for the strange mind of Jorg Buttgereit :)

Just FYI, if you're looking for something different to watch, Warner Archive is streaming a 1937 B-picture, Sh! The Octopus," starring several second-string Warner contract players that you'll recognize from better films. It's an "old, dark house" farce set in a lighthouse that is threatened by a supervillain called The Octopus and by an actual giant octopus, with a multiple twist ending. The stream is active today (http://www.wbshop.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-WB-Site/default/Search-Show?cgid=WACStreamTheater) until 12 am Pacific, 3 am eastern.

Word to the wise: the new "Elvira's Movie Macabre" double feature DVDs apparently don't offer "movie only" options, which is fine if you're in the mood for Cassandra Peterson's brand of blunt force comedy. I was hoping to see The Manster without the pop-up punchlines, though.

I went to a live event tonight and I’m wondering if it will count towards this challenge. It was called “Jeepers Creepers…It’s Boris Karloff!” and it was held at the New York Public Library. It featured four actors reading from a script reenacting Karloff’s life and career while film clips and still images played on a screen behind them. Afterwards, they brought out Boris' daughter, Sara Karloff, who sat onstage and answered questions about her famous father.

Didn't someone last year go on a scarecrow-themed movie streak? It got me wondering about other scarecrow movies. I know Night of the Scarecrow was mentioned earlier. Couldn't really think of any others off the top of my head.

My insight would be to watch the original instead. Seriously, though, I had fun watching it in 3D at the theater because the 3D effects were really good, but it was still a pretty bad movie. There are some good kills, but there are some long boring stretches, and I was not a fan of the ending. The original is a favorite, though.

Man, I haven't been able to check the forums in four or five days and now there's 8 pages of discussion to go through. I've been only averaging about one movie a day for a while, but hopefully after I update my list, the rest of today and most of the weekend will be spent catching up.

I did get to see a theatrical release for the first time during this challenge in years and went to see Paranormal Activity 3 last night. I enjoyed the characters so much more than those from the second, but the series has pretty much become Cheap Jump Scare: The Movie and this time saddled with a last third that felt very stale and predictable, probably thanks to it being too similar to the ending of a much better film from last year that I watched a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the scarecrow recommendations, folks. I'll add those to my Netflix queue.

For today's theme, I've made an appointment with a witch doctor and watching White Zombie. That's my lunchtime movie today anyway. I figure I might as well get the theme out of the way to free the choices up for when company comes over tonight. I'm still leaning toward Inferno, though. I still haven't watched that Blu-ray, but I'll at least be more open to suggestions.

White Zombie will be No. 99 when I finish it. That means I should be crossing the 100 barrier after work tonight. :)

These last few days are making a little nervous. I've got this overwhelming urge to fit in everything left in my unwatched pile I possibly can, yet I know it's not physically possible. And Netflix is no help. Practically all the titles I wanted sent in my queue are on the 'short wait' status and suddenly Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge and Supersition are coming my way. I'm having the same problem. There are a handful of titles I had specifically anticipated watching outside on my screen, but I know it's just impossible to fit everything in, especially when you consider I can only use the outside theater at night. But all things considered, my list of titles I wanted to watch during the challenge but didn't is likely to be smaller than past challenges.

Last night I watched Piranha (2010) and it was great seeing it in 2D finally, since it looked awful in fake 3D in theaters. The underwater shots were the worst part in theaters and were a blurry dark mess and looked much better on the dvd in 2D. The film itself is pretty fun actually and moves at a nice pace and since it's completely different than the 1978 version, I hardly consider this a remake, though the 1978 film is obviously superior. The only thing missing was an opportunity for Christopher Lloyd to scream "Great Scott!" since he was totally in Dr. Brown mode in his two scenes and was fun to watch.

In regards to the My Bloody Valentine remake mentioned earlier. I didn't like that at all and found it pretty boring and prefer the original 1981 film. It should have been a fun film and instead was pretty bland which is a shame. Though the set piece in the supermarket later in the film is well done and has an old school slasher vibe, but other than that, the film didn't impress me much at all.

I made a huge mistake watching The Butcher (2009) just before going to bed last night. It left me feeling all queasy, but it wasn't entirely caused by the plot or gore.

Strapping cameras to the victims' heads is probably the worst idea ever, especially since it doesn't have any bearing on how they're murdered. It just yields stomach-churning shaky-cam footage. Also, was it really necessary to show almost the entire film from the one character's P.O.V? Why couldn't they have kidnapped a steadicam operator?
Quite possibly the worst film I have seen all month.

I
Thanks. I need to find something for 10 bucks that it is worth it for free shipping now lol.

Gotta get on that Amazon Prime! :)

Just finished watching Bloodsucking Freaks. It's a pretty strange film even by 1970s standards of Horror/Exploitation.

Oddly enough it reminded me a lot of Last House On Dead End Street, mostly because of how cold and exploitative it all felt.
