Fox Buys ‘The Punisher’ Series Adaptation From Ed Bernero & Marvel With Put Pilot
By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Thursday October 20, 2011 @ 5:00pm
In one of the last big drama deals this buying season, Fox has handed a put pilot commitment to The Punisher, a series based on the Marvel comic from Ed Bernero and ABC Studios. This is one of two high-profile sales for former Criminal Minds showrunner Ed Bernero. He also has high-concept Western spec The Eye set up at ABC.
The Punisher is described as an hour-long procedural with a Marvel signature and a new take on one of the comic book giant’s iconic characters, Frank Castle, a rising star detective with the New York Police Department who moonlights as the vigilante Punisher, seeking justice for those the system has failed. Bernero will executive produce along with Marvel. This marks the first sale this season and the first one ever outside of ABC for Disney-owned Marvel, which is developing TV series based on its properties through ABC Studios. Last season, the company set up Hulk with Guillermo del Toro and David Eick and AKA Jessica Jones with Melissa Rosenberg at ABC. Those projects have been moving on a slower development track at the network. This marks ABC-affiliated ABC Studios’ second high-profile sale to Fox this season, following another put pilot commitment for the Shonda Rimes-produced 1980s dramedy Wildwood. It also is part of Fox’s return to the comic book adaptation business after the recent cancellation of Human Target. In addition to The Punisher, Fox has in the works The Spectre, a drama based on the DC Comics superhero character co-created by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily.

If this ever makes it to air, I'll judge it on its merits, but right now the idea of watering down the Punisher for network television sounds terrible. The character is an inherently violent one and the last movie finally got that aspect correct (in a very over the top manner).
Back in my comic collecting days - the late '80s/early '90s - the Punisher was among my favorite characters, so I always look forward to any of his adaptions, though. Who knows, turning him into Dexter could work as its own thing.

This could be a cool show if done on one of the pay premium channels. Since it is not, it probably won't be good.

Although the Frank did originally try to do things by the book, once he became the Punisher, he was no longer a cop. I don't much care for this idea.

This is just Fox's attempt at getting a standard police procedural on their network using the Punisher's brand cache as a lure for viewers. I doubt it resembles the comic book character in any way but the name.

Probably a 5 minute pre-credit Punisher action scene that has nothing to do with the episode ala James Bond. Followed by 30 minutes of regular police drama. Last 5 minutes Punisher gets bad guy.
Bet he has partner(s) and they'll try to keep audience interested with 'will they find out' storyline. Punisher will always get away before partners(s) show up.

Agree with everyone. With it being on fox can't see it working out very well. If it makes it to TV, I'll check it out, but my hopes arent high at all.

I'm a huge Punisher fan, but I'm not interested in this at all unless it's violent and has cameos from other Marvel characters. Hopefully the first season arc is vs Barracuda.

This would be great on FX. And 24 was tame compared to the shit I see on cable. The Walking Dead, Dead, and Breaking Bad really don't hold back.

I don't remember there being any fucks to be bleeped in The Walking Dead, but they've dropped the audio out on that word a few times on Breaking Bad.
