Ralph Bakshi's "Coonskin" (Xenon Pictures, 11/8)
Searched the archives for this, didn't find anything, so...
Looks like Coonskin will finally be released on DVD on November 8th.
It's listed as Coming Soon at: http://xenonpictures.com/xenon.html
More evidence: http://www.dvdaf.com/price-one.html?dvd=0152984

Bakshi has said that this is his favorite film he made. I doubt a commentary will appear (Check Xenon's track record for those) But we might get some interviews.

I'm surprised over the inclusion of the original title of the movie, and not the alternate one: 'Street Fight'
amazon has it up for pre-order

If it's released, then that's one more LaserDisc in my collection that will be only worth a buck (if that).

I looked on dvdpricesearch.net, and there is no mention of either working title (Coonskin or StreetFight) in their database at the moment.

I noticed that. But it's listed on DVD Aficionado & Froogle. DVD Price Search gets most things right, but not everything. I recall they never added the 2nd pressing of the MST3K 20th Anniversary box set, they only list the OOP collector's edition at $162.

EDIT: So, if it has been, "Remastered in high definition," does that mean that it will come out on BD sometime soon?

Is this still coming out? I was just about to order at bn.com and they removed it from my cart and said it can't be ordered.

Hmph. Well it shows as backordered on my CD Universe pre-order, & it's also changed to "Not Yet Available" at DVD Empire. The Xenon Pictures site still shows it as "coming soon".
I dunno.

Any recent word on this release? It seems to have been delayed and no details are listed on the xenon site anymore. Amazon has it listed to be released in June.

Re: Ralph Bakshi's "Coonskin" (Xenon Pictures, 11/8)
I remember seeing "Coonskin" in Detroit when it was originally released (1974? 1975?) and it was a really bizarre experience...plenty of the dialogue was lost to me because audience members were constantly shouting at the screen, and I recall there was a shooting outside the theater after the movie let out. Maybe I'll get it to see what I missed almost 40 years ago.

Haven't played it yet, but I did receive it and it is, indeed, the Xenon DVD!
UPC: 000799817728
Catalog #: XE8177DVD
Category: Animation, Crime Drama
Strange, everyplace I look still has it listed as "coming soon".
There have been a couple of other times I received pre-orders way ahead of schedule. A few years ago from CD Universe, a couple of Synapse/CasaNegra DVDs when they'd gone back in print. And I received Machete Maidens Unleashed nearly a month before the street date from DVD Planet.
Funny thing about Coonskin is I wasn't expecting to receive it, period. I'd pre-ordered it a couple of months ago, then when the street date got pushed back it remained in my account as a "backorder". I don't know what's going on, but I don't mind having it!

It has been listed in stock at Amazon since yesterday. Haven't received shipping confirmation on an order I placed last night for it.
Deadpan - how's the quality of the release? Have you dug in yet?

They dropped it a dollar on Amazon but I can't argue over that price

Re: Ralph Bakshi's "Coonskin" (Xenon Pictures, 11/8)
I just picked up a copy of this at Scarecrow Video in Seattle. I had no idea a legit DVD was in the works until i saw it on the shelf there today, and a little voice told me I'd better grab one. All I can say is, WOW.
Well, maybe I'll say just a bit more. I have extremely fuzzy memories of this film from a viewing of the ancient VHS release 20 years ago, and the film didn't really resonate with me back then. So, I was quite unprepared for the masterpiece contained in this new DVD...sometimes a proper presentation can work wonders on a viewing experience.
Xenon's anamorphic widescreen DVD presents COONSKIN in all its gritty, colorful gory glory, with every bit of the original film grain intact, just as it should be. No DNR scrubbing, just good old-fashioned film textures, and animation cel lines too. Looks wonderful on my 55" Samsung LED LCD, like I'm watching a mint 35mm original print at my own private drive-in. After seeing it like this, I'm now convinced that it's one of the finest, most artistically brilliant and hard-hitting American satires in film history. Kudos to all who worked on getting this release of Bakshi's magnum opus to happen.
On the downside, if there's one film that needs extras to provide context and historical background, it's this one. And unfortunately, there are none to be found, unless you count the abominable quality non-anamorphic widescreen trailer for SWEET SWEETBACK'S BAADASSSSS SONG that plays before the main menu appears. Oh well; the market for physical media being what it is these days, we're extremely lucky this appeared on actual pressed DVD at all. Looks great, sounds great, it's complete and uncensored, and the cover is based on the original poster art. As the chances of this hitting Blu are most likely nil, I'd encourage all you Bakshi fans to snap this up immediately, 'cause you're gonna LOVE it.
