Hey dcrw6...thanks for the cool video. I can't believe I'm just now getting into these films. I'm 48 and have been a horror/mystery fan since a kid!!! Well, better late than never!
In New York, Channel 9 used to run a lot of these on TV back in the late '70s and '80s. That's how I first saw a lot of Argento and Bava titles. Also, the 42nd Street theaters used to run them (dubbed in English, of course), but they rarely got shown theatrically outside of that, as I recall. Except for the more high-profile ones, like Argento's SUSPIRIA, which I saw at a Bronx neighborhood theater.
I do remember, though, seeing a more obscure one at another Bronx theater. It was called WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOUR DAUGHTERS? and it had quite a good cast, including Mario Adorf, Giovanna Ralli, and Farley Granger, although, to my disappointment, Granger, a onetime Hollywood star, was dubbed by somebody else. The movie itself wasn't very good and the Friday night crowd felt cheated, so we all moved en masse to the theater next door, which was playing SILVER STREAK, with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, which had opened recently (putting this in either Dec. 1976 or Jan. 1977). We walked in just as Richard Pryor entered the movie, so we got there in time for the good part. A hefty security guard had been standing just outside the front entrance of the theater. I watched him as we made our migration. He turned, saw what we were doing, and immediately turned away so as not to see what we were doing. Which made us all satisfied customers by the end of SILVER STREAK.
