The NES was particularly full of Japanese translated errors. The ending of Double Dragon for instance calls the two protagonists Bimmy and Jimmy.
Then there is also this infamous error from Zelda 2.
translation errors are funny but it was the intro to double dragon 3 with the bimmy lee typo you can use a game genie code to fix it

zelda II contains Error not an error. Error is his name nothing more
anyone have an idea how manufacturing errors like the ones i listed could happen? especially the ps2 one i'm confused how anyone could mixup a dual layer DVD with a ps2 DVD

I have heard that rumor before, but never seen it confirmed. Someone would actually have to look in the game's code to see if Error was his intended name. It seems very unlikely and would have to be a huge coincidence if it was never an actual error.

Several ways actually. Most of these things are cross-manufactured on assembly lines. It is more than possible than an assembly line worker just put the wrong thing into the wrong product. That happens a lot. Also, someone could have bought it and switched it, then repackaged it and returned it for a refund, then the store just puts it back out for sale again. Kids in particular think that is a funny thing to do.
How does that settle anything? I still don't know what it says. Even if it does say "I am Error" in Japanese, maybe the bug exists in both versions and Nintendo was just too lazy to fix it when porting it over to the US.

I can determine this: it definitely doesn't say "I am Errol" (as some websites insist). It says ERAA, which is almost certainly meant to be a transliteration of "Error".

Here is what Google translates "I am error" to with the red part meaning error.
私はエラーです。

That is interesting because the red part matches with the pic I posted, but the rest of it does not.

The rest says "My name is Error." Not "I am Error."

俺の名はエラー。ゲッ・・・
(tough guy voice) "My name is Error. Ugh..."
It's written differently in the screenshot because this is a non-Japanese character speaking (and it's a game for kids).

I was talking to a friend of mine and he mentioned Error's friend Bug (バグ). :)

I sure hope you didn't just spam a forum you're involved in...because that would make my defending of your first post moot.

not intentional spam my apologies.
but not even being able to post images or links until 30 posts seems a little bit aggressive
and pictures speak louder than words

Spammers are aggressive, this prevents a lot of work for mods/admins. 30 posts usually indicates someone who wants to become involved in the forum, which is nice.

Am I the only one who remembers that another character later in the game mentions Error, as in "Look for my friend Error in Whatevertown and give him this item"? I always thought it was just a bit of a joke, because you're lead to believe his name is an actual error the first time you see him, but then you find out later on that his name really is Error and it's a clever little "ah-ha!" moment. Then again, I suppose that second mention could also be a real error. The mind boggles!

I'm more curious on why so much time passed before this thread was started! The OP is talking about Dreamcast and PS1/PS2 games! But I actually did buy a game before with no disc. NBA 2Ksomething for the Dreamcast. I was pretty sure KMart was going to call the cops on me when I tried to return it.

^^ That happened to me as well -- at Babbages back in the day. The cashier was like "oh, sorry" and went and got the disc out of a drawer. That's when I knew the rumors of the tools working there were indeed opening the games, playing them and then re-wrapping them as new.

you know this type of things happen all the time. more recently with
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare where a blank Philips DVD was mispacked into the cases one person went to return it and got accused of stealing it.
