I read Stuart Galbraith IV's DVD review of (Mickey Spillane's) Mike Hammer - The Complete Series at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=50942 and...From McGavin's 2006 obituary in the New York Times:

Mr. McGavin was not particularly proud of Mike Hammer, describing him to a reporter in 1968 as "a dummy." "I made 72 of those shows and I thought it was a comedy," he said. "In fact I played it camp. He was the kind of guy who would have waved the flag for George Wallace."

There are plenty of older actors who put down almost everything they appeared in. McGavin also didn't think much of the Kolchak series or the Night Strangler TV movie. He just seemed to like the original Night Stalker TV movie.
