Anna Karenina (Dir: Joe Wright/ Knightley, Law, Ronan, and more)
Looks like we got another adaptation of this book, it's been adapted many times from what I see. Anyway....I'm game. Joe Wright? WITH Knightley and Ronan again? Sooo fucking there.
Wright is directing a screen adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel ‘Anna Karenina’. Current cast includes Keira Knightley as Anna, Jude Law as her husband, Aaron Johnson as her young love, and Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson as Konstantin Levin, as well as Saoirse Ronan, Kelly Macdonald, Olivia Williams, Matthew Macfadyen, Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough. As of July 2011, Keira Knightley has begun rehearsing, in preparation for principle filming expected to begin later in 2011
Knightley will star as Anna, Jude Law will play her husband Aleksei Karenin, and Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy) will play Count Vronsky. Kelly Macdonald, Matthew Macfadyen, Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Emily Watson, Olivia Williams and Ruth Wilson also have been cast in the story of a woman making her way in early-19th-century Russian high society.

I always confuse Joe Wright with Joe Carnahan.
For about ten seconds, I was mightily angry.

There's simply not a lot to say about it at this point: Wright makes great films, especially when they're based on novels, and this one looks to be another winner. It'll be interesting to see how he pushes "Anna Karenina" and Tolstoy towards his idea of excitement, and how he condenses the material into a two hour production.
Tom Stoppard, who helped to adapt Brazil and Empire of the Sun (and co-wrote Shakespeare in Love), penned the screenplay. I'm not really sure what to do with that, other than to say I'm intrigued.

Only if you exclude all the ones that aren't - Topsy-Turvy (one of the 10 or 15 best films of the 90s,) Sense and Sensibility, any of several versions of Pride and Prejudice, The Draughtsman's Contract, Great Expectations, quite a few great Shakespeare adaptations, etc. Depending on your definition of "period piece," you also have great stuff like Atonement, Lawrence of Arabia, and Zulu.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this. I'm a big fan of Russian literature, especially Tolstoy, and I also really like Joe Wright.

Thank you. I was thinking, "I made this thread. I'm the only one post. I've posted twice after myself..and I was the OP."
Joe Wright is damn solid for sure. I've never read Anna Karenina, though I've been close to seeing some films based on it. I may get the book soon.
Also...this is a Russian Period piece, not a British one.

I like it as a lavish period piece. Every frame is filled with Russian decadence.
The imagery is really strong and memorable. The surreal "stage" narrative had it's charm. They pulled off some very clever scene transitions.
Anna is generally unlikable throughout the whole story. You feel for Jude Law, being stuck in such a position.
The story with Levin and the Princess was really moving - the best parts of the movie.

I was not a fan of the stage narrative. Also the rhythmic actions of some of the background actors made it seem overly comedic at times. Jude Law was probably the best part of the movie. I haven't read the book so that might be a factor in all this.

I know Joe Wright is highly praised for his novel adaptations, but at this point he's really feeling like a one trick pony.

While I appreciated a few of the performances (namely Law) and the creativity behind the stage mechanic, it's a very gimmicky, hollow adaptation.

Question, did they use the never ending staging technique the entire movie? Because I turned it off after 30 minutes. I don't mind see that on a real stage, but not in a film. Just got on my nerves. Beautiful cinematography otherwise.

No they stop about half way through...if that even.
