Rise of the Apes has been holding nicely. Guess we will get the sequel for sure.

I know i'm in the minority, but Fright Night sucked, and i'm glad it's doing poorly.

So The Help was able to beat out the 2 new crappy looking PG-13 horror movies? Shocking!

Yawnnnnnnnnnnn... slow weekend. I'll prob go catch a screening of Shark Night tomorrow. I love awesomely bad movies, but this really should've been Summer 2011's Piranha 3D. Blood, boobs, more blood... and more boobs.

Re: Apes - I hope we do, and I hope they do it right. I'd love to see Fox up the budget to $150m and make it epic.

Re: FN - I'm with you. Seems like people are evenly split on how they like it, but most of my trusted horror friends loathed it. I won't ever bother with it.

Technically it is 2011's Piranha 3D... It was released late in the summer, in 3D, and tanked.

Just no nudity.

Man. I'm assuming this has already pounded the hell out of the remake's gross. To me, this was the biggest surprise of the summer (Thought it would've joined this summer's flops)

As it stands now based upon worldwide gross...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes: $314,687,362 and counting.
Planet of the Apes: $362,211,740

It needs an extra $18 million to pass it domestically after Monday, which at this point, is doable. However, it won't gross significantly higher than that...

It's interesting the way certain sequels are approved or not - it used to be if a movie made a certain amount a sequel was inevitable... but it seems like studios are banking more on audience/critics reaction now too.... thus we get sequels that significantly outgross the previous entry, which was unheard of for awhile (with the big exception of T2) it didn't start happening with regularity until Mummy Returns and Austin Powers. At the time I figured a POTA sequel was a given, but perhaps they knew it would fail. I don't know, seems like quality is more of a factor now...which is good...although that still doesn't explain why Wolverine 2 is still going forward...

Up to 428m now. Not a surprise given the chipmunks success. Truly a dreadful and unfortunate trend... parents are taking their kids for the nostalgia I guess.

Very disappointed it's just $345M worldwide. Are they any countries it hasn't opened yet in?

Re: The Help Works over Labor Day Weekend: Weekend Box Office Thread 9/2 - 9/5

The New York Times reviews the summer boxoffice today:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/05/bu...ef=todayspaper

I found this paragraph on the summer's two biggest flops interesting:
Which of the summer’s two major bombs, “Cowboys & Aliens” and “Green Lantern,” was the bigger financial calamity? Both will lose tens of millions, but “Green Lantern” is by far the larger loss. Warner, confident that it could create a new franchise with that film, decided not to bring in a financing partner to reduce risk. Universal hedged its bet by teaming with DreamWorks Studios and Relativity Media.
And, according to Fox's Tom Rothman, X-MEN FIRST CLASS and RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES were "very, very original pieces."
As opposed to merely "very original"? Or just plain "original"? Or only partly original?

Re: The Help Works over Labor Day Weekend: Weekend Box Office Thread 9/2 - 9/5

Very, very original pieces of franchises that have existed for decades. I guess that does give them credit.

And I see the point about Green Lantern. True, he's a secondary DC character, but he's probably never been hotter in the industry, and it will fan the flame about how they can't do anything other than Batman and Superman.

I think it hasn't opened yet in China or Japan. I think it'll make enough to reach $400 million ww.

I'd say that $345m is impressive coming off a $93m budget, 11 years of franchise dormancy and an ill-received previous entry.

This is from BOM's foreign box office report:

With openings in Italy and Japan to look forward to, Apes still has a lot of money left to earn.
Including China, that definitely will add to Apes' total. I'm sure it can reach $250 mil overseas after those markets are factored in.

I think what allowed those films to succeed that they were sequels/reboots/whatever that weren't made based off a democracy. Fox allowed Vaughn and Wyatt to do their own things without any say from studio brass. First Class had two prior financially successful, but audience-and-critic despised sequels within the past five years and Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a similar situation just over a longer period of time. By letting creative and talented people do their own thing will allow a movie to succeed despite any preconceived notions one might've had before time. I still have friends come up to me and ask if Rise was any good and they're surprised when I tell them (genuinely) that it was a good movie.

I saw GL is up to ~$215M worldwide. Sure it's not a success, and likely not a profit; especially if the $300 or 400M with marketing figure is correct. However, I think it might have eeked out enough sales to earn a sequel when you account for licensing sales and the eventual DVD/BR sales. If a sequel is made you can bet the budget will be significantly reduced.
