I'm impressed with movies that...

are ORIGINAL!!

even if based on source material, i love a movie that shows me something new. is not a remake, reboot or some shit like that. not that i hate all that stuff, but when i watch something like The American and am totally blown away by the artfullness and originality i am more in awe than if it were a based on something known for awhile.

there is such a lack of an original idea in Hollywood nowadays that something new is so refreshing and more than welcolmed.

...kill a dog, particularly on-screen.

(Don't get me wrong, I love dogs but filmmakers seems virtually terrified to kill a dog in a movie so it seems ballsy when one does that.)

...scare me through the atmosphere it provides and makes me use my imagination. I enjoy a good gory movie as much as the next guy but tons of gore does not equal scary.

I like ambiguous endings, or at least ones that don't wrap things up in a bow. MYSTIC RIVER is a good example.

Also when children are killed, particularly on-screen.

Man, with Grindhouse you have both a child accidentally killing himself with a gun AND a dog getting ran over by a truck. Double win!

Re: I'm impressed with movies that...

don't let a happy ending come up at the last minute (like the hero starting to breathe after looking like he's gonna die.)

Re: I'm impressed with movies that...

Straight faced action flicks with class. A dumbed down action flick can still pull me in. But the ones with a solid cast, visuals, etc. are always amazing to me. I grew up on action movies - looking back a lot of them were really dumb - but I like them anyways.

Re: I'm impressed with movies that...

...that beats the odds against getting made. Like a TV series that lasted less than a season and getting a feature-length theatrical film to conclude the story arc.

Joss Whedon's "Serenity" was a frickin' miracle...and great frickin' SF flick with INTELLIGENCE, WIT, and ORIGINALITY (JJ Abrams take note...yeah right.)

I know.

I guess more on-screen adventures of Captain Reyolds and Co. will have to go the wayside so we can get a new version of "The Wrath of Khan" with Seth Rogen as Khan Noonien Singh or some such shit.

Re: I'm impressed with movies that...

... don't make me check my cell phone for the time. Harry Potter finale kept my eyes glued to the screen the entire time.

... make me laugh every few minutes. Thank you Horrible Bosses and 30 Minutes or Less.

... provide me with "oh shit" moments. Magneto stopping missiles mid-air was neat but using his power to stab a man with a knife was an "oh shit" moment.

Primal Fear and Pulp Fiction being great examples from the 90s for this.
